Big Botswana Baecation, Part 3: Savuti Marsh, Chobe National Park (Overlanding Botswana Self Drive)

In Part 3 of our Big Botswana Baecation travel vlog, we head to another part of the Chobe National Park, inland this time, to the Savuti Marsh and the (currently) dry Savuti Channel. A completely different landscape to the Chobe Riverfront, but a hard slog to get there. Just a short distance of 60 km of sandy driving takes us far longer than anticipated to maneuver, but our trusty Land Cruiser 80 Series, the Wild Dog, gets us there without any hitches.
At the SKL Savuti Camps, we've been assigned a campsite right on the edge of the camp. The raucous sounds of lions and elephants at night is surprising and another first for us. We've never heard the wildlife quite so busy at night ever before.
Though we do have a dearth of new animal sightings, we do end off the trip with another, even more incredible, lion sighting, and end our journey in the Savuti area all smiles.

Adventures come with drama sometimes. Although I would prefer not to have too much of it 😄
Your US Texas follower. If Google maps tells me X amount of time on tar, I add 10-15 minutes for every hour estimates for gas/pit stops if I push my pace. I don’t/can’t do dirt much with my vehicle. If I end up on dirt/mud on occasion I 2x my estimated time for that stretch of road. I drive a Toyota Camry sedan, not meant for off road at all. When I bike a trail, if I hit soft sand, my pace is at least 1/3 of estimate since I’m hand pushing.
Cost of wood at some state parks here in Texas is $7 USD for 4 sticks (aka - one log split into 4).
We don’t get to see cool wildlife outside of deer and raccoons that break into your ice chest and steal your sausages. They are evil buggers.
It's sometimes really difficult to gauge how accurate Google Maps is on our dirt roads. It's almost always an underestimate, so I tend to make my own estimates and then confer with the app. That final dirt road to Savuti, though, caught me by surprise!
US$7 for one split log! Wow! I think I need to stop complaining about Botswana wood, which is about half that price 😄
We're very fortunate to have so much wildlife in our parks and conservation areas.
@@TravelGigolo wood is a bit cheaper when you get it locally at higher volume. Bit when you buy them from the park, you contribute to the the park amenities.
Great episode. Can definitely attest to the sandy conditions - its worse heading to Linyanti, all good fun though. Hope the 80 series is okay, honestly my worse nightmare! Great episode, thanks for sharing.

Thanks for sharing. You are helping me prepare for my trip in the winter. How long did you drive from hitting the tarroad in chobe riverfront to savuti campsite ?
From hitting tar road to getting to Savuti camp was about 3 hours. The sandy road was slow. Hope that's helpful.

As for tyres, just in case of side wall damage i carry two spare tubes and tyre levers. So in case i damage both my spares, i can still get a fix done.
We are usually not too far from help if things get critical with tyres, but the thought has crossed my mind to have a tube on hand. I can imagine it may be quite different in Australia's massive outback.

@@TravelGigolo It is quite essential here. At times help can be 1000km away. However, I used to carry tubes when I travelled in Botswana too. Especially when travelling through places like the Kgalagadi Desert.

Tell me, what do you use for beds in your ground tent ? One of the reasons I don’t use mine anymore is because of the heavy stretcher beds that I need to cart around with me. Space and weight !!!

We use roll-up memory foam mattresses. They work really well for us. They do take up a lot of space in the vehicle, but they weigh very little so they can be placed on top of everything.
Blow-up matresses are a pain. I've had all sorts for various prices, and they all eventually leak.
