I'm glade you did this, can't tell you how many times I've had this argument about shbar vs shblk, hit/exp-cap vs passive avoidance, and larger stam pool vs mastery stacking. I hope more warriors today listen to this, and understand there true potential. Although I picked this up pretty early in beta, it's not the preferred tanking style when compared to the 102.4(unhittable) status, 2ktps, 300+resistances, 340-450 defense skill, 72.4dmg reduction with bonus Armor. I miss uber tank builds
Keeping track of defensive CDs is, albeit hard in a PuG/LFR environment, however you can setup Grid to display bubble, Pain Supp, Shield Wall etc. In a guild/organized run with comms, its vital to know if someone is able to pop a defensive CD so that you dont have to blow that Nature's Swiftness on someone who just blocked/bubble incoming damage.
The word mitigate means to "lessen the severity", so essentially, mitigation is just "lessening the severity" of attacks. It's another way of saying you take less damage.
There isn't really a way to know. However, if most of damage going out is physical, then the warrior tank can intervene a dying clothie. Obviously, there's no way to know who has what prepared. But, the colors give you a little extra hint as to who will likely go down first. A plate class can withstand more hits than a clothie regardless of cooldowns. It's also preference. I don't think it makes it look messy at all.
all classes have there draw backs, deathknights and monks may have more dps BUT they do not have an aoe taunt or frisby pull which makes it harder to get aggro of larger groups of mobs during raids which forces dk's and monks to rely on mobs being grouped together and aoe dmg on the adds to gain aggro
If you see a blue and pink raid frame dying, the better person to help is the blue since the pink pally can likely take care of themselves. A mage is significantly more squishy than a bubble boy.
As a Tank in Siege of Orgrimmar,on the Fallen Protectors fight, usually tanking Rook, Rook does vengeful strikes which does a ton of steady damage, I mostly cap on 100 rage, spending 60 rage on Shield Block and spend rest on Shield Barrier. Now in 5.4, I find myself using both of them, however I block doesnt seem too effective for how much immdiate rage it costs.
This seems to have hijacked the thread but this is just your opinion and has no relevance to anything. If anything the green/black grid looks like an 8 bit computer in my eyes and it's not something I want on my screen
I've just thought if barrier is gonna stay up for a while, stopping my hp from going down i'm gonna use it but if i'm taking so much damage that it will just instantly dissapear i'll shield block (unless magic) to make my hp go down more smooth and slowly
You could, however it would be very small window that you wouldn't waste it. If a healer dies in the middle or last 10% or so, hitting both would only be ideal if you have the glyph for 20 more rage bar, since you want to use full effectiveness of shbar followed by a shblk. I also wouldn't recommend blowing all defensive cd's at start either, but a pre-pot Armor right before the pull should give you cushion for any healer. Also during taunt off hit ot with vigilance to keep vengeance & dps
A good example in my mind would be Horridon. I'd much rather shield block the auto's and be certain that I can barrier the triple punctures, than rage starve myself using barrier on his autos then pray that I don't get parried on my Rev/SS just before the Puncture is coming in...
Mike: I am somewhat frustrated with the damage output / DPS or my prot warrior as compared to other tank classes in similar gear. Also our AOE threat abilities are limited in my opinion. I know damage output is not a tanks main concern but when I am doing LFR and a Monk tank in lesser gear is doing 100k DPS and I am doing 30k it seems like a glaring issue. Your thoughts?
I like shield block because my shield slam hits 50% harder with it active (assuming you're using the glpyh). Got to love those 700k shield slam crits on a lot of ToT bosses.
i have my class colours on which helps with things such as lifegrip from symbiosis so i can lifegrip melee players out of aoe such as on elegon and melee players often need more healing then ranged players because it is easier for ranged players to reset stacks for example, thats not always the case but its not as black and white as you make it out to be. also you are so sure your correct that anything the other person says is automatically wrong because he's not agreeing with you correct or not
I'm trying my hardest to make Guardian work, but I just feel like I'm taking far more damage than I need to. Give us back the mastery that made the class playable in cata please!
UI is only "bad" if it obstructs serious ground effects or boss warnings etc...If you're COMFORTABLE with your UI, theres nothing better than that. Personally I use class colors, have all my bars bound, hidden and memorized. Many would say its bad to use class colors on grid and have all your shit hidden but hey, its comfortable for me.
Semi casual players!! Just use Shield Block for melee attacks and Shield Barrier for magical, leave it to the raiding warriors out there to figure out all the math behind this.
Could I maybe just use both...? And hope to god i have good heals? That's about what its down to for me lol. "Alright guys, pulling in 5... Pulls and blows all defensive's within 15 seconds." /wrists
That's just it, it's YOUR opinion. I'm sure YOUR UI is swanky and the best UI in the existence of WoW... to YOU! If Preach likes having a bit of colour and variety in his UI, many people do, that's their decision. If he prefer's the health to deplete vertically instead of horizontally, does that instantly make his UI terrible? NO OF FUCKING COURSE NOT.
Again, a simcraft. Shield Barrier is fine for your hc dungeons, but when you step into your LFR/10/25 mans the damage is a lot more spiky. Typically as a prot warr you are GCD locked, I'd much rather smooth out the damage taken, even if overall I take more over the course of the encounter. Using shield barrier on regular attacks means you have a harder time building the rage you need to get that 60 rage barrier/block up for the big incoming spike attack.
Wrong, it doesn't prevent damage, it reduces damage. Avoidance prevents you from taking damage. And Block is mitigation, because you have to get hit for it to work. If you Parry and Dodge three consecutive attacks, then you have avoided ALL damage. If you block, you reduce the damage by a percentage. Only warriors Critically Block, which is a ton of reduction.

So shield barrier and shield block are now both good spells however they're entirely situational?
So going with stamina you would want a Tauren miner?
I like shield block because my shield slam hits 50% harder with it active (assuming you're using the glpyh). Got to love those 700k shield slam crits on a lot of ToT bosses.
long-winded but very informative for the serious prot war tanks =)
Im scared of the nasty nasty words which will be said over my beloved guardian druid.
Damn so ill have to get over my instinct to pull some mobs and use shield block if they just melee me
Very informative guide, Preach. =]

Apples and Oranges ... one does damage, one mitigates it.
Iv found that you might aswell just use barrier on every fight apart from hc mode
Crap, I was thinking the Tauren Racial Bonus as it USED to be.
I used block on shitload adds and barrier on snapping bite abilities. hmm.. thanks i will take a other look at it.
excuse me, I can't download the UI...
how hard is to play tank yo?
Mitigation, something that prevents you from taking damage. Don't really know how to explain it better.
It's not that the mage is more important than a DK, it's that the mage will likely die more quickly than a DK.
I'm trying my hardest to make Guardian work, but I just feel like I'm taking far more damage than I need to. Give us back the mastery that made the class playable in cata please!

the tauren buff is negligible at best, go orc for the AP buff
Semi casual players!! Just use Shield Block for melee attacks and Shield Barrier for magical, leave it to the raiding warriors out there to figure out all the math behind this.
nice save there mate :)
Could I maybe just use both...? And hope to god i have good heals? That's about what its down to for me lol. "Alright guys, pulling in 5... Pulls and blows all defensive's within 15 seconds."

how about a huge trash pack that does just physical damage? i guess block is better
Good video
so you know whos important to bres
shield slam and shield barrier at the same time? *makes a macro for it*
SECOND, we love you preach :3

Prot warriors NEED 1 more full AoE spell. Thunder clap can only control aggro to a certain extent:(
It's Shield Maid
Blood DK master race.
I will protect the sh1t out of you - Protection Warrior
I'd bet you'd blow your shit if his grid bars, as health depleted, rose vertically... OCD MELTDOWN ENGAGED

Pretty simple, bloc

Here's the thread -> elitistjerks(dot)com/f81/t131083-mop_protection_warrior/
