    Hey and THANKS for all these DIY videos first of all, they have helped me on my 2001 540i. I'm sure this has been asked but can I put an OEM M5 front and rear bumper on my 540i? What all do I need if I can do this?
    Thanks,

    Very nice job as usual. You never complained about your previous bumper, and it didn't look bad either, so why did you change it? Not that you have to have a reason obviously, but just asking :). Another question if you don't mind, Did you buy the new bumper pre-painted with your color code or it was primed and you painted it?

    • @E39Source
      @E39Source  10 років тому

      The old front bumper was aftermarket, didn't fit correctly and was cracked. I wanted the front bumper to match the quality and condition of the rest of the car. I ordered it primed, and had it painted by a local shop.

  • @kjae860516
    @kjae860516 10 років тому +1

    Great job! Just wondering, why did you replace the whole bumper? Why not just sand it down and repaint factory color?

    • @E39Source
      @E39Source  10 років тому +1

      It would have been expensive to plastic weld it and then refinish. So I'd rather re-finish it.

  • @roxorz007
    @roxorz007 10 років тому

    Great video. Did you have any troubles with the pop rivets? I had a heck of a time re-installing mine on the rear bumper. Also how come you didn't get the brake vented lower grill?

    • @E39Source
      @E39Source  10 років тому

      M5 fender liners don't have brake cooler cools. So I don't need the lower grill with the holes. Pop rivets are super tight, but they work fine once seated correctly.

    • @roxorz007
      @roxorz007 10 років тому

      ***** Ok thanks, Thats odd on the brake ducts. Out of all the E39's I would think the M5 needed them most.

  • @abucs3
    @abucs3 5 років тому

    NIce vid Ryan. I'm looking to replace my front and rear bumpers soon and wanted to know why you went from aftermarket back to OEM. Just curious if the quality is a factor as the price difference is substantial and your aftermarket bumper looked quite good to begin with. Thanks!

    • @E39Source
      @E39Source  5 років тому

      Fitment and peace of mind. The aftermarket ones never fit on the sides very well, they all seem to be too short and stick out too far. My aftermarket one had some minor damage and I just hated the fact that it wasn't a genuine BMW/M5 part. The OE one costs a lot more, but it is stronger and fits much better.

    I recently did an M5 front bumper conversion on my 1998 540I I installed the front bumper gasket on the top of the bumper I did not cut it at all I just put the whole thing on there I didn’t know you were supposed to cut it? where do you cut it? when I put it on the bumper and installed the bumper it doesn’t look like there would be any trim for the molding headlight trim there’s no space in between the bumper and the bottom of the headlights for the headlight trim to go?

    • @E39Source
      @E39Source  Рік тому

      From factory, there was about a 4" cut-out in the gasket in the center of the bumper. I didn't bother cutting mine, just left it as one piece. The fitment is tight, but with the bumper fully seated/installed, the lower headlight trims will fit.

      Ryan bought the bumper new from ECSTuning, I have heard that Umnitza makes good replica bumpers too.

    • @christiancorreia7279
      @christiancorreia7279 9 років тому

      I bought my replica bumper from DDM Tuning, it is fantastic quality recommended to me by a local E39 driver (I spent no more than 130 for the bumper/fogs/grilles/trim). Umnitza is a horrible company, do not use them. I ordered a rear bumper from them, it came 4 months later and I had to drive all over and cost me a tank of gas on top of the bumper price. OH, and my bumper came cracked at all corners. It is on my car but not near worth the time that went into it.

    Are there ventilation holes for the drivers side intake on the lower front grill only or are there supposed to be five horizontal holes on the passenger side also? This car was purchased recently by me and the front end was damaged and replaced partially. Drivers side lower fender liner is missing also air dam cover. Mine is a 2001 M5

    • @E39Source

      For some reason only the one side has those small holes, I don't know why. Sounds like you've got factory parts.

    I have an E39, 530i You mentioned there is a video about converting the front bumper I can’t find it can you put the link to see what part I need to do it from 530 to an M5 style thanks

    • @E39Source
      @E39Source  3 роки тому

      Hmm, I can't find it either, the creator must have asked me to remove it. Anyhow, behind the bumper, there is a large piece of trim with the kidney holes in it in front of the auxiliary fan. This must be changed to the M5 version. It is available here: bit.ly/2IE4qws and #1 on this diagram: www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=DE93-USA---E39-BMW-M5&diagId=51_2427

  • @lukemalhotra

    Why were you completely changing the front bumper? Was it cracked or was the non-OEM bumper not fitting perfectly? I just recently cracked the front of mine and need to replace the front bumper:( Just wondering if the cheaper non-OEM would be enough...

    • @E39Source
      @E39Source  7 років тому +2

      Don't buy the aftermarket ones, they don't fit right. You get what you paid for. I replaced it after it was cracked with an aftermarket, and then again with an OEM so it fit right and looked factory again. Save yourself the money and time and do it right the first time. M5s deserve genuine parts.

      Thanks for the information! I'll take that into consideration. Haha, I actually drive an 02 540i m-sport and loving it so much. M5 is a bit too much power for the Tokyo roads. lol But absolutely true that OEM is the way!

    I have a silver color like your car. I have searched online and people have been saying that I need to color match it etc, and get it painted and I can only purchase black or grey colored bumpers, but they must be painted. Is that true?

    • @E39Source
      @E39Source  7 років тому

      Bumpers come primed (gray, black). It will your responsibility to receive the bumper, and take it to a paint shop to be painted the exact color of your car, and then clear coated.

  • @Greaner762
    @Greaner762 3 роки тому

    Would this theoretically work on an 03 540i Sport Car? It came from the factory with the same bumper I'm not sure about differences between the m5 and 540i

    • @E39Source
      @E39Source  3 роки тому

      If your 540i came with a bumper that looks like an M5 bumper, it is likely an M-Tech (does it have M-logo door sills and a black cloth headliner?). If so, it would be the exact same process. If it is a standard 540i, there are several other additional items you would need to replace to get the M5 bumper correct. These include an air duct trim behind the bumper, the belly pan, fender liners, etc.

  • @TakesTalent

  • @TheShafro

    • @E39Source
      @E39Source  10 років тому

      Just the one for the top of the bumper!! I don't know why it said you need 3... I bought two and now I have an extra. I'm sorry if I didn't make that clear in the video.

    • @TheShafro
      @TheShafro 10 років тому

      ***** no it's cool, but I'm still confused. Did that only one gasket cover the whole edge of the bumper?
      On the RealOEM blowup picture, you can see one long gasket (#16) and one short one (#15). They both have the same part number and it says you need a quantity of 2 for #15 and 1 for #16.
      Do you you think there's supposed to be a gasket at the bottom?
      I already ordered all 3, but I'm still confused
      realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=DE93&mospid=47592&btnr=51_3723&hg=51&fg=15

    • @E39Source
      @E39Source  10 років тому

      TheShafro Yes, I spent time trying to figure out how the same thing haha. There is no gasket on the bottom of the bumper. And one of the part #15/16 can be used on the top. I didn't cut mine in two pieces as shown on RealOEM, I just put it on there, it's the perfect size.

    • @TheShafro
      @TheShafro 10 років тому

      Update on this:
      I did end up only using one, as well. It was a hard to bend around the center, where the grilles sit, but one was perfect.

    • @E39Source
      @E39Source  8 років тому

      +Rualdo Kanani If you are able to get underneath the car and remove the splash shields, you may be able to get at it that way. Not sure about the top clips though, the bumper carrier COULD be in the way of those. Don't worry about pulling the bumper though, it's very easy if you maybe have a second set of hands, and take your time. Easy job.
