It depends on your child’s diagnosis and severity
As the saying goes “how long is a piece of string?” the answer is - it depends! Every child is different and their abilities vary. That’s why we need to know whether the diagnosis is in speech, language or both. Moreover, sometimes you’d be able to identify whether it’s a delay or a disorder. This needs to be determined by a qualified speech therapist.
In general, a delay implies that a child would catch up, whereas a disorder means that the development is out of order. However, the degree of severity will affect how long a child would need to be treated. Let’s say that your child has a speech disorder where he cannot articulate a few sounds only. For simplicity’s sake, maybe the /L/and /s/ sound, then you can expect that it wouldn’t take long for a speech therapist to correct that.
It may be a long fight
Answering how long a child needs to be in therapy is a tough question. Expecting that it would be a long fight is the correct mentality going in. There are many cases that children catch up really quickly and do not require therapy for long. When we say this, it isn’t because we want your money. In fact, the quality of therapy is measured by how many children improve. The more children get results and leave therapy, the easier it is for parents to trust us. So expect that this will take quite some time. Work with your child and realize there are no shortcuts.
Early intervention and homework is essential
We’ve heard it many times, maybe by therapy clinics to get you to sign up for their package. Early intervention is crucial. Because learning is easier when you start earlier. Children can get into the groove of therapy and accept that they will have to sit down to work on speech and language daily. We have students even in adulthood who still require speech therapy. Although their language skills are age-appropriate, there are social skills to be fine-tuned. It’s a lifelong journey.

I really like and appreciate how realistic you put it in this video.
My daughter is four and a half years old. She has trouble sounding her words (only half of what she says is understandable) and mixes sound positions with "s" words by putting it at the back instead of the front.
She has speech therapy at her school and has improved quite a lot. Before she started, she couldn't be understood much at all and would just make general ambiguous sounds. I got us in an early prevention program, but it did little (kinda made me feel like I wasn't teaching her right since 99% of what to do was on my part and I'm not a trained pathologist or anything and they just told me what she needs to work on 🤷🏻‍♀️).
The past couple years have been an uphill battle, but it's far from over. She really tries everyday, but like any typical kid, she only has the patience to practice for up to a half hour (on a good day).

You’ve given me hope for my 18 year old son, because you helped a 30 year old. I thought it was over because of his age..He’s been to so many therapists and they work on things he doesn’t need help with like idioms etc. He stammers so much and says hmm, reverses and changes what he is saying. He has no fluidity. He is on the spectrum. His symptoms are the stammering and no fluidity. What can I do to help him? I will do anything!!!! He wants to work and be independent but how if he struggles to communicate. You’d have to be so patient and have all the time in the world to wait to see what he will say. One sentence takes forever. I want to help him. Please! 😭🙏🏼🙏🏼

My son is 19 month and not talking. I think it's more my fault than anything, not working with him to teach language. I thought that if I just talked to him a lot he would start but maybe that's not the case? He has hit every other milestone and his doctor says he isn't autistic. Apparently his comprehension is behind as well, I'm told he should understand commands like go get your cup. However if I haven't taught him the word cup obviously he can't do this. So how do I teach him "cup" just show him the cup and repeat the word endlessly?

What makes SLPs suspect Apraxia of Speech in kids? It's an extremely rare disorder and chances of someone having it is almost 0 but I see Speech therapists (like you) mention it quite off-handledly and others dole out this diagnosis like candy.
