I've never been to China but I'd like to travel there. It seems to be a country of some exotic culture, beauty, and I've done some googling out of curiosity and interest in possible future traveling, and what I have learned is that aside from the very large cities of Bejing and Shanghai (which are even more populated than L.A. and even New York, I think), there are numerous other major quite populated cities such as Nanjing, Changsha, Chongquing, Chengdu, Xian (as you mentioned), Hefei, Zhangzhou, Wuhan, Nanning, Wenzhou, and each of those cities are at least the size and population as US cities such as St Louis, Detroit, Atlanta, Seattle, Cleveland, Boston, etc. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Great video of the approach to Beijing on a clear day. I have never been quite so lucky as most of my many flights have been on the red eye from Sydney CA174 . You don't get to see much day light on that flight. I did not realize just how time passes by. Recently I looked through my passport entries and departures of the last decade or so and adding them up I found I spent over two and a half years in China. Never would have thought it. It's an amazing place. If you never visit China for a decent tour you will have a normal life but die never ever knowing what you have missed.

The landing is not from the east (yes, but you were flying from the east - not exactly - you actually flew from the south east to the north west - considering the position of Tianjin and Beijing.), but from the south to Beijing Capital International Airport. The runway your flight used should be 36R (18L). There are 3 runways now in BCIA: 36L (in the west), 36R(in the middle) and 01(in the east).
it is almost minus 10 degrees celcius, with chilling wind. Nobody wants to expose an inch of his skin in the air. and btw, it is on an airplane and it does not go thru downtown BJ.

8:27 视频中的河为坝河。远处的社区为北京朝阳区东坝
9:41 温榆河。远处跨河的公路为机场第二高速。
10:00 视频中高速为京平高速。飞机已经接近首都机场3号跑道。
10:40 中国服务大厦。
