  • A CV-22B Osprey from RAF Mildenhall of the 352d Special Operations Wing, pays a visit to the Air Weapons Range (AWR) at RAF Holbeach. Armed with a .50 calibre machine gun on the ramp, the shipwreck and targets have gotta go!
RAF Holbeach Air Weapons Range is a United Kingdom Ministry of Defence academic air weapons range (AWR) situated between Boston and King's Lynn in the civil parish of Gedney on The Wash, in Lincolnshire, eastern England. It has been bombing here since 1926. It does not have an airfield, although it has a helipad, which the Chinooks use very frequently when they want to mash up the range.
When you see the RED FLAGS and/or lighting system, this means that the range is ACTIVE. Please for your own safety, DO NOT CROSS the range boundary. If the range is not active, there are two things; firstly, I wouldn't venture onto the marshy terrain. It is treacherous enough as a hazard on its own. Secondly, DO NOT touch/move/tamper anything on the range. Anything metal, just leave it be. Many shells/bullets/ammo may still be undetonated and will cause severe harm, if not death if tampered. Please don't make your injury/ignorance become a chain of events to ruin it for others. It is a splendid view from the boundary, so please, stay safe and enjoy. Entering the range when the range is active is against the law.
A little bit about the CV-22B:
The CV-22B Osprey is a tiltrotor aircraft that combines the vertical takeoff, hover and vertical landing qualities of a helicopter with the long-range, fuel efficiency and speed characteristics of a turboprop aircraft. Its mission is to conduct long-range infiltration, exfiltration and resupply missions for special operations forces.
This versatile, self-deployable aircraft offers increased speed and range over other rotary-wing aircraft, enabling Air Force Special Operations Command aircrews to execute long-range special operations missions. The CV-22B can perform missions that normally would require both fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft. The CV-22B takes off vertically and, once airborne, the nacelles (engine and prop-rotor group) on each wing can rotate into a forward position.
The CV-22B is equipped with integrated threat countermeasures, terrain-following radar, forward-looking infrared sensor and other advanced avionics systems that allow it to operate at low altitude in adverse weather conditions and medium- to high-threat environments.
The CV-22B is the Special Operation Forces variant of the U.S. Marine Corps MV-22 Osprey. The first two test aircraft were delivered to Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., in September 2000. The 58th Special Operations Wing at Kirtland AFB, N.M., began CV-22 aircrew training with the first two production aircraft in August 2006.
The first operational CV-22 was delivered to Air Force Special Operations Command in January 2007. Initial operational capability was achieved in 2009. A total of 51 CV-22 aircraft are scheduled to be delivered by the end of 2019.

I used to live in walking distance, with my bedroom looking out across the range. I miss it so much especially watching the lasers at night.

Hi Ted.What an enjoyable way to spend a bit of spare time, blasting away with a 50 cal! Festering away in the putrid swamp that claims to be my mind is the thought that because of the terrific blast from the rotors side guns cannot be deployed on the Osprey. I believe that to overcome this disastrous lack of defensive firepower a remote controlled belly turret has been fitted which can be lowered when required. I assume it would be armed with a minigun. Is this for real, does anyone know? As an aside Ted, the considerable effort you put into the video descriptions is much appreciated. Pip pip young bear.

I've never been but it looks like a pretty small range area. Is that the case?

That's nice and all. Just better hope the people you're shooting at don't have any sort of MANPADS. As Ukraine is teaching everyone, any low-flying and slow moving aircraft are sitting ducks for those weapons.
