Correction: Andrew Marr states that Kamala Harris has never been elected. Kamala Harris was elected District Attorney of San Francisco (2004-2011), Attorney General of California (2011-2017), and Senator, CA (2017-2021).
Thank you for your comments, we appreciate your feedback.

AND elected Vice President of the United States in 2020. Joe Biden may have put her on the ticket, but WE voted for that ticket in that election. Kamala, like Joe, was elected.

Kamala dropped out of the primary before a single ballot was cast in IA or NH, after Tulsi Gabbard put an end to campaign on the debate stage, even though Kamala had raised tens of millions from the party machine. The same party machine which selected her for VP and appointed her multiple times in CA. This really is not complicated nor shocking, it's just big money politics.

Marr's statement is correct. Biden was elected not Kamala. Plus all of her California elections were essentially political appointments. In practice CA is a one party state. Kamala had the backing of the Dem Party machine in CA so she did not face any real opposition in any of her primaries. This is well documented. So what Marr is saying is more nuanced, Kamala has never faced any electoral competition, save for her roll as VP, which does not count, as it is a position to which she was appointed by Biden.

Not to mention the insulting dismissal he( and to be fair bad faith actors in the US media) who don't realize the Democratic nomination is about getting party delegates. So the fact that the majority already back her, is like winning a party vote. It isn't too dissimilar to party leadership contests in the UK. The UK just doesn't have the primary part. Technically the US party conventions are like the UK.

She _did_ get elected to the position of California Attorney General, twice, and elected to the position of Senator for California. Her campaign was initially talked about a lot but internal staffing issues plagued the campaign, along with her naturally quite shy (by American standards) personality acting as an impediment to her public speaking skills in the context of speeches (as in, not prosecuting a case against someone/something). Four years on, she has had much more practice at public speaking and she has much more maturity. She is also able to take advantage of the existing Biden-Harris campaign staff.

@@ReubenJBrown I have to agree with you. I'm surprised that Andrew, whom I thought was astute, is actually this ignorant about something he opines on so often. Almost nothing he said is true. Biden is old. However, Biden is plenty capable at governing. He is considerably slower, but his cognitive ability is fine (see the NATO press conference where he answered a number of questions on a number of subjects). I am truly shocked at the daft behavior of two people I had come to respect.
Let me answer another "concern." Obama hasn't "endorsed" Harris. There is a simple reason for that, geniuses. She is not the party nominee. As the only former Democratic president, non-office holder, Obama is doing what one would expect someone in this position to do: wait until she is officially the nominee to endorse her. Second, Biden, had he continued, would have won. It would have been narrower, but he would have. Even after the disastrous debate performance, much of the polling was beginning to stabilize and was largely within the margin of error. However, there can be no doubt that there was a lack of excitement in the way that the Trumpanzees display for their Chief Oompa Loompa. They will come out to vote for a wheel of brie cheese, if one can convince them that it came from between Nitwit Nero's toes. It was this and the internal polling, and some of the other polls that these two seem to be completely unaware of, that made President Biden decide to do this. In fact, it was his understanding of all of this, not someone who is in 1) cognitive and 2) decline would see. Again, I think he would have won, but the polls were too close for comfort, and the Democratic Party needed the excitement of a dynamic person like Vice-President Harris who could provide ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL, what President Biden could not.
And finally, one more thing, which again shows the utter ignorance of these two. If Biden were to resign, Harris would become president. There would be no vice-president. Why these two nebbishes may ask? In an instance like this, the House and Senate must approve the appointment of the vice-president. Given who controls the House, especially, this would not have happened. There would be no vice president. That means that religious zealot Mike Johnson, as speaker of the house, would be next in line to the presidency. In addition, were there a tie on a vote in the senate, there would be no vice-president to break that tie, and breaking a tie in the senate is the only actual constitutional prerogative of the vice-president.
Again, for two people who purport to know something about US politics, the ignorance is palpable. I was under the impression that Andrew had at least a working knowledge of government and politics. Sadly, the words out of his mouth might as well be the dribblings of a baby barfing pablum.

Harris served as the junior U.S. senator from California from 2017 to 2021; she defeated Loretta Sanchez in the 2016 Senate election to become the second African-American woman and the first Indian American to serve in the U.S. Senate.

It cannot be stressed enough that EVERY American should read the Project 2025 manifesto, and see for themselves the danger it poses to all of us. This isn't a Red or Blue thing anymore, it's an outright, extremely detailed, clear and present threat to everything we, as Americans, hold dear. This isn't hysterical bleating, it's a call to all of us to read the manifesto. If you enjoy all of the freedoms you currently have, if you cherish our Constitution and the Rule of Law, if you want to feel safe in your homes without fear of being arrested on some insane charge, like, 'speaking out against the regime', if you cherish the education you received, and that your children receive, if you cherish your Right to go where you wish, read what you wish, speak to whomever you wish, love whomever you wish, then READ Project 2025 and SEE how ALL OF IT can be taken away from you, regardless of who you voted for. Trump's supporters will NOT be immune from this nightmare!

Nobody ever in politics or in industry undermines the organisation they work for; it would be a great lapse of professionalism. If Harris had criticised Biden, Andrew Marr would now complain about Harris being disloyal. Also of course Biden can do the job. There will be no great legislative efforts between now and January 25. If a crisis comes, there are excellent people around Biden. Of course Biden can do the job. Maybe not in 4 years time. But he can definetly see out his term. This is just arguments for argument's sake.

I am 80 myself and remain fit and energetic but a hard day’s work can leave me very tired the next day. Basically I don’t bounce back from a physical or mental effort as quickly as I would even ten years ago. So my view is that it was Covid that saved America from another Trump presidency.

Kamala was on the ticket together with Biden and as his running mate secured votes that won the Democrats the presidency. Marr, you don’t understand the rules of the Democratic Party. The primary vote for Biden was also a vote for Harris as he is president. The VP steps in if the president withdraws and then needs to get the endorsement of the delegates. She has done that.

I remember Mr Marr telling us not so long ago that he reckoned Keir Starmer as Prime Minister would be more radical than we expect and that he would be quite zealous over the scale of poverty in the country.
The same Keir Starmer who, fewer than three weeks into the job, suspended 7MPs (yes, that is right, a PM with 411 MPs SUSPENDING 7 of them) for voting to lift 300,000 children out of poverty against his wishes. Doling out a grand's worth of punishment for a tenner crime.

It's possible that Starmer sees this rebellion as a good thing long term, as some of these MPs are from the Corbyn era and a poor fit for what he wants to do.

3 weeks in and suddenly YOU get your crystal ball out and know what Starmer will do during his tenure, the first decision he makes that you disagree with. Almost like you were sitting waiting for an excuse ....
He's maintaining discipline is all. He said he'd considering dropping the cap, he's just not going to be seen to be bullied into otherwise what do you think would happen with so many parts of the country disintegrating, competing in a decimated economy?
Besides which, there are people who are dying due to NHS backlogs through no fault of their own : a decent proportion of the people who want benefits for more than 2 kids were simply irresponsible and selfish. Of course absolutely there are cases where it's not their fault, but people who have like 5 kids and of the basis that other people will pay for them - people who themselves wanted to have more kids and didnt because they couldn't afford it - is deeply unfair. Nor is it good for society.
