How I did mine: I live off-grid in a solar powered house I built myself singlehandedly. Finally figured out how to charge my model 3 long range from the sun. I have four 300 watt solar panel gets full sun all day. I have a Growatt inverter which has an 80 amp MPPT charge controller built-in. I Have configured panels serial/parallel for 24 volt output. Growatt is split phase so it provides 240 volt output. Then I have four BattleBorn batteries. Get 28 miles per hour. $1250 for panels, $750 for Growatt inverter, $3000 for batteries, misc cables fuses $250, total $5,250. Actually anticipating charging my cybertruk next year.
how's that cybertruck comin along ? 😅
" BEFORE I GET " any further into this video , I want to tell you (WILL) I GET such a kick out of watching your videos , If any old retired guys like me find out you live in their neighborhood , they will be hanging out all-around your place , "I WOULD " !!
Will I still remember you years ago inside your little caravan talking about the little sony camera and now you're in that huge and bloody good home. So happy for you because you always put passion into everything you did, that's why you got success in life! And one more point, you've chosen to have TIME instead of money at the beginning and afterward It worked, because you had the time to follow your passions! Great job Will
I'm loving your videos more and more, Will! I thank you so much for being so awesome.
Well done on that off grid solar system, well at least nobody is gonna turn off your electric. Awesome!!
" Speed Charging My Tesla" said no one ever.
Until it flew out your mouth. lol.😎
@Yar Nunya I think under the current tech 160 miles in a 30 minute charge could be classed as a 'speed charge'. I know I'd be pretty happy with that!
Love Will’s excitement
Will is the new version of The Renaissance Man. I look forward to his house totally off-grid with his Tesla getting recharged from his Home Solar.
I am so excited for him....
@@realeyesrealizereallies6828 omg in order to your belief, a renaissance man could never ever exist, as it would take a whole life just to learn deeply even only one of the sciences you listed. Renaissance man is the one who brings to the world his own knowledge and participates to improve the world not only by improving himself but all the people around him. This guy started from a caravan alone, nearly a young homeless and now is giving inspiration to many people to raise up in life
Good to see you putting your house together for charging the Tesla and I will be doing the same soon as well. Great job 👍 Will!
I can't understand how you retain all this knowledge but it constantly impresses me. I could only wish I could hold this knowledge in my head. Wrongfully jealous. Great video.
I actually already built a system like this. 240v split phase 36A max constant output from my inverters. I charge chevy bolts at 7.2kw. The battery bank has ~900 aH of storage at 48v. Im still testing and adjusting the system but Hopefully I'll be able to finish all of my build plans and post it online on instructables or something when I finish
Matthew C You’re on to it. Please share your data. Peace.
Best video EVER!! I'm waiting for the Tesla Pick Up Truck to come out so I could power my entire house with the 100Kw traction battery pack. The Tesla comes with a 240 volt ac inverter that you could back feed into the house to run everything off grid in an emergency or just be your own power company if you have enough solar panels.
That's awesome. Love the video's been around since 5k subscribers. Keep up the hard work
Thank you for watching for so long :)
Will, I can't believe you listened to me and ran with it!!! So amazing!!! (though you went with an old S instead of a new base 3 - free SC?).
Of course, I'll be suggesting more as you're doing all the fun stuff I'd want to if I could.
So, how about: (taking into account your last few statements on the video)
Explore getting actual full Tesla packs from wrecked cars, like a 50 or 75 kWh pack from a wrecked 3, or even the modules from these packs.
Build a shelving unit next to your car to support all the packs (or better the original pack intact) and use the built-in charging circuits, but tap into the high voltage DC output and figure out how to make that directly useful.
Also, if you can figure out how to tap directly into the high voltage DC output of the Model S and its scary amount of power, and hack in an interface to your home that gives you way more than the medium output you were getting from the 12V charger on the last vid.
Crazy good content dude.
The image that originally popped into my head when watching this vid was 3 huge Tesla packs, unopened, hanging vertically on your garage wall, holding between 150 - 300 kWh, each pack thinking it was still in a car. I toned it down a bit, but that's actually the vision. I would hope that most homes in, say, 20 years, would have a home battery of about 500 kWh, connected to a micro-grid, and that these micro-grids are each connected to multiple other grids, forming a mesh-network of power across the entire country. It would be so hard for something like that to be taken offline.
glad I found this video and now I'm on to your website, thank you!
You are what we call “dialed in” my friend, great work.
As far as I can tell, you are the only one doing this from the ground up. Kudos and thank you!
Your a god damn fool if you believe he owns that house AND a 70,000 dollar car PLUS all that solar equipment....thats his parents shit....he isn't old enough to own shit like that.... if it is his, his parents definitely paid for it all!
I've been doing it for years
OMFG, I've been following your channel for years but for some reason this has me in tears. Not for any kind of bad reason... It's just so awesome that I can barely handle it!
5:52 - I love the dark optimism x3
Well done young man!
Will you’re like a Tornado of information. I’m just so impressed by your self belief and motivation. What will come out of your shed I wonder. Steve Jobs and all great inventors started in a shed/garage. Looking forward to your liberation off grid system. 😀
You, Sir, are at the cusp of creating a nation-wide solar company to compete with other solar companies with the right backing and investors... and your following is a great start as they see your passion for this
New home owner: I'm putting in a swimming pool in my backyard.
Will: I'm putting in a solar array in mine so I can charge my battery powered boat and take it to the lake with my Tesla.
As if Tesla's can really tow, I hope the lake is 100m down the road. Gasoline is required for serious payloads and towing.
Hmmmm...don't tell that to Ford and the developers of the F150 Lightening. They might give up.
@@6foot8jesuspilledpureblood82 Diesel is what's needed. Electric motors have loads of torque, and I'd assume that most tesla cars are limited only by their suspension and frame, not the motor. 5000 lbs is nothing to shy at, that's on par with most medium sized trucks. Pepsi (i think, might be coke) will be testing short service radius electric semi truck and trailers for local deliveries... think restocking the walmart or grocery store and back. Electric is not good for long hauls, diesel will always be the bang for the buck.
Always interesting. Thanks. Really looking forward to a "how to build it", series of videos?
Brilliant Will!
Congrats!! You are awesome.
Great stuff! Thank you!
Like the lights, you have over the shed.
Will, now that Tesla is truely green! Congrats!
Dude so Love you and your Energy💖
Wish I knew how to do all this.
I want a solar car but not exactly in my budget yet... But I am keeping the dream alive. Wish I could get hand on training to do this... I would Absolutely Love to go completely Solar at my home especially after this Texas Grid shut down. I nearly froze to death with zero heat source when electricity was off in 0° weather and my car was Dead from the cold so no chance of warming up from that either. I made it through by wearing multiple layers of clothing, 4 pairs of socks, a hat, and blanket on. Was afraid to go to sleep during the coldest hours thought I may not wake up. Was a truly Crazy Nightmare I will Never Forget... Please teach me Solar
charging at 4.8 kw will take a long time, but will charge fast enough to keep ahead of the batteries thermal management, even in cold weather. I have a 10.5 kw solar array on my A-frame house’s roof. Waiting for the tesla pickup patiently.....cheers!
Another great video 👍
Love that you are doing well!! Have you ever done a video on Firefly Oasis Batteries (AGM carbon foam)?
There's a huge wave of excitement around off grid solar. I live in an area subjected to frequent power outages so backup is important to me. However in urban areas where the supply is more stable I can't see the benefits of spending thousands of dollars on redundant systems. Yes it's a cute idea but an expensive indulgence.
I have not watched your channel in a while....But I have been with you since Hong Kong....Holy Cow, when did you get a house....Wow...Good For you..........I am very impressed....!
I am building a grid-tie system with Victron EasySolar II GXes and was already thinking that 3 of them are overkill for our small house, but your video reminded me i just need to meet the current requirements at voltage of the appliances and 3 phases are not necessarily required if one Inverter/Charger can supply those currents! Thanks
Craziness:) really cool experiment
Useful information. Really looking forward to a complete system video - solar panel to battery to inverter to grid tie + panel. Noob electrical needing info for rammed earth house built from ground up.
You kids today, I understood every word, not a clue what you said. Thank you for making me smarter.
KEEP WATCHING the videos and some of the ones already shown that cover the basics, and the "LIGHT" will come on for you !! THAT'S HOW I did it ! THIS IS food for the Mature , and older brains !!
You are amazing.
I.m in awe your brain is like a solar battery bank just soaks up the info and stores it ,no sun just encyclopedia,s
Very cool!!! Charging your Tesla with solar.
Great setup!! I'm just getting into stand alone systems thanks to your channel. I ordered the Ecoflow Delta with a 110w panel. Do you think 2 delta's could working with a (240 setup box?) could charge a Tesla at 10 mph with solar pass thru?
Dude you are a beast.
Curious to see how you can disable your grid tie and run direct off your roof solar. I've been told by owners of grid tie systems that if the grid goes down that you can't run off roof solar alone. Something about the grid tie inverter stops working?
Yeah, need to run the solar thru off grid inverter instead. I was going to use combo system and make a micro grid, but not very wise. Need to make video on this
@@WillProwse would it be possible to install a secondary ATS within the two inverters so when your gridtie goes down the pip kiks in?
Excellent video.
Good stuff bro.
Awesome you are in a house,,, congrats!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nice shed man... wish I had a backyard like that for some panels.
Thanks for the video. My interest has been to build an off-grid system (avoid permits and AHJ) just to charge the car by capturing solar during the day when I am not at home, and then using the stored energy in the batteries to charge the EV. Figure i will need 5-6kwh of storage to be relatively comfortable to generally not rely on moving over the the grid. I really want to find a solution that lets me go DC all the way, no wasteful DC to AC back to DC. I see Solaredge has a EV charger but not sure if it runs off the DC or AC side of the inverter.
Could you please help to build the off grid solar system. Love your your smart work thank you
What the hell you are a baller now! All of a sudden you got a 3/4 million dollars worth of stuff around you. Must be fun! More power to you.
That's what I was thinking.
Great video! Now you can set up a rain collection system to be fully off grid, I mean, literally totally. Dreaming about one day I can afford a small island .....
Will your a genius!
Great will! You're catching up to me very fast. I do have my home built 10+K LiFePo4 back up bank. My thinking is why should I run off my own batteries when I can sell to the grid and only use my batteries when the grid goes down - which does happen in my rural area.
If your utility lets you sell back then yes it's a great idea to sell back to them some utilities don't allow you to
If you live in PG&E area this channel is a must watch. Even if you don't it could come to an area near you.
I don't understand why more people in California don't already do setups like this. I live in Northern Ontario and even I have a small setup like this. Solar is not that great here though, the days are too short. I do eventually want to buy a big property so I have room for a larger array, like 10-20kw vertically mounted so I don't have to take snow off them every morning, and then a big ass battery bank. With enough storage I think it would be doable here, but its trickier. In places like California it's a no brainer.
A lot of my friends in California say off grid and battery backup disconnects are illegal. And grid ties go down in a blackout so they don’t back feed the lines and hurt repair people. So having solar is useless until laws change.
That sucks, I heard Florida is the same. Laws like that are retarded. Off grid systems should be legal. Governments pretend to care about the environment but minute something can threaten big oil they make it illegal.
Will, I really like all your videos and have learned a lot from you. Could you please let us know the level of fan noise coming from the LV5048 and if it is continuous while supplying 15A 240v to the Tesla while charging? I can hear the fan noise and it sounds very loud behind you in your storage shed. Do you think it would be too loud to mount inside a garage if you were working on a project? I saw your video of the smaller 24V unit by the same mfg and the fans were much quieter. Thanks in advance.
As always, Awesome Video Will! with my setup, i installed a Nema 6-50 outlet. Only issue i have is when i check the voltage with my meter on one side and to the ground, im getting 109 volts and the other side i get 139 volts. not sure why its not 120 volts each side. did i get one of the wires crossed somewhere in the panel or inverter?
You are amazing😀
How hot do the battery get could you put a grid of them in the walls or floors of a house with removable access panels
That’s awesome! How did you learn how to set this solar power system up?
Wouldn't you want to charge it directly from the aray? Like charge house batteries then charge Tesla when full
Nice! You are using exactly the MPP inverter that I want to buy. Could you help me and publish your settings?
I want to charge my fiat 500 e what kind of configuration for solar do I need ? 👽
Does resistance effect the length of that cable??? Because that is one long cable.
Just wonder what the losses are over that cable.
How compact and mobile could you make this? As in small pull behind trailer? For off grid homestead or camp site?
Will, May I ask you for a clean solar ev charging station project? 24V or 48V system.
Would you use this system to charge regularly and not in speed?
why did you not put the few extra panels that is laying around, on the roof of your solar shed
Exactly which MPP unit is this?
Awesome!
It might help if you elevate your solar panels to help with that shading, Will. A long table would probably do the trick at the minimum
Great Video! Are solar sheds legal? Did you have to get a permit?
Will I would love to help you build your next system. I rode my solar powered ebike across America this summer.
I can bicycle to Las Vegas
Do you have a video saying why you don't like the powerwall?
Hi will.
What solar panels you Reccomend for your 5k 48v solar shed system
Ideas, images, content = A+++. On-camera sound recording = D- Buy an Ebay Zoom H1 recorder ($40) and cheap lavalier (lapel) microphone, marry vid + sound in post-production. Hi from Bumville.
How would those batteries do in colder conditions?
I want to run my rv off my 2 alternators, a few solar panels and possibly tesla batteries. How do I do that?
Can you use just solar panels only? (No batteries)
Good stuff.
You should get a small bluetooth clip-on mic, the sound would be so much better.
the question is how long did you manage to charge the car ? or how many miles added before it quit
Would be nice to see a cost per kwh/equipment life.
New to this but how many AH is lost on a long cord run? 5%?
Weldon brother for your good effort , please how can I connect 7 12v battery to 24v
How many panels do you think I'll need to power a fiat 500e
You probably know about these batteries, but just in case: check out Winston LiFePO4 cells if you haven't. Probably the most affordable way to get a large capacity with LiFePO4, and pretty easy to scale.
How many solar panels did you need and how long it take to charge?
Is there a way to charge off solar directly, high voltage DC ~440v? Just seems more efficient to avoid converting to ac only to convert to ac and then back to AC. The superchargers do this. It would require a voltage regulator of some sort.
I was just looking at those inverters on Ebay. It looks like there are a few different brands of this same inverter? They are very cheap for the features they seem to be offering, so looking forward to your video on this inverter. I wont be using solar, I build biofueled generators and will use the charge features of this inverter. This inverter coupled with another in parallel could be very power along with my system pushing it :)
What model solaredge inverter is that
Hey will quick question what size would you recommend for a battery bank to charge a EV
Nice power shed !! How many panels are on your house roof!
I laughed when I saw your panels…laying in the shade…!
is it me or do you love the way be say By at the end of every video?
I have about 650-700 ah of liion, @29.4v at 4.2per cell. For powering my 5kw inverter, I am adding to the capacity slowly, and I have a 12v liFePo4 bank for 12v lighting, just over 100ah, with every light on , it last for about 12+hours , I'm looking for a DC to DC charger to have the ability to charge one from the other, incase of emerfency,
You buried the lead! Please make a video about your solaredge HD Wave solar charger and whether you’ve enabled it’s zero export mode?
Have you thought about using Tesla powerwalls? More capacity and longer batter life compared to the old school battery array.
I'm curious...are the PV panels on your roof using the mini-inverters that are used on grid tied systems these days? I understand that they will only function IF they are picking up the Grid tie at a specific MGhz or they just become inert and won't function. So, technically, you cannot use your roof PV panels unless you lose the individual inverters attached to them, and then run them into your house loads panel through an independent inverter. Thank EVTV and Jack Rickard for that lesson LOL. Anyway, you continue to impress me with your drive to be offgrid and totally independent of the power companies. I'm still distilling my RV dream with the solar and lithium batteries (along with a 480 watt mini-split HVAC system). Gonna cost a bundle, but well worth it! Keep the videos and tutorials coming my friend!!!
