I love Ross Noble's sense of humour. He's not cynical, he's wide-eyed, but soooo funny. And it's never against somebody, it's just funny out of any context.
You are so right; I was once in the front low, at one of his gigs, and for about the first 25 to 30 minutes of the show, it was Ross Noble interacting with me haha. You see. I had folded my leather jacket, and put it across my lap; and when Ross came out, he saw me sitting there, with the jacket on my lap, and was confused by the sight haha. I can’t remember what he asked me about, or everything that he said, as I was trying not to die from laughing so damn hard; but it wasn’t him really taking the piss out of me, or trying to embarrass me, as it can be with other comedians. It was just him asking me stuff, me responding, and him finding something humorous in what I said, and making everybody laugh; it felt like chatting to a very funny friend, who is really on form...in front of over 2 thousand other people haha. It wasn’t nerve wracking, like you think the comedian is going to make you look like an idiot, so everybody else laughs at your expense; he was just really easy going, and friendly, while also seeming genuinely interested in my answers to his questions, and was great at making me feel at ease... ...while, simultaneously, making me nearly choke to death from laughing too damn much/hard; and it got to the point where I couldn’t breathe, and was genuinely worried that that’s how I was going to die: laughing myself to death at a Ross Noble show haha. One of the most impressive things about it all, was that the whole opening, of him talking to me for nearly half an hour, was obviously improvised on the spot; he just used the funny image, of me with my jacket on my lap, and then riffed off that, as well as off the other things I said in response to his questions about me, and my life. Obviously he’ll have stock material in his head, that he can go to, for certain situations, and he probably threw a few of them in during that bit; but, from what I remember, the vast majority of his jokes were so specific, to both his reactions to my leather jacket on my lap, and what I was saying to him, that it felt completely improvised. Whatever he did, it was an excellent night of comedy; he was on for ages bloody too, and the rest of his set was just as funny as my interactions with him; but it was that first part of the show, that tipped the whole thing over, into it being one of the greatest live comedy experiences I’ve ever had in my life- before or since haha. He’s such a great performer; I would love to see him live again, and I’d highly recommend him to everyone. 😀 Anyway, apologies for droning on so damn much; brevity will never be my strongest attribute haha. Vincent van der Hoek Brian Cox is seemingly great with this sort of stuff. He never appears to get annoyed with the insane questions like "where are Ewoks most likely to live?", he just finds them funny and (in some cases) a good on the spot challenge to answer intelligently. The only people who really annoy him on TV are ones that ignore science eg. "The earth is flat." and "The moonlanding didn't happen." They're the people who you can see him slowly wanting to yell at.
He was the same on a show that used to be on in Australia: Good News Week. He didn't come on the show very often, but when he did, my god... They always had a segment where everyone got a prop of some kind, and every single time Ross was on, he hijacked the show just by dicking around with one of the props. It's always just pure insanity.
