The best places to visit in Montenegro
Established as an independent country in 2006, the small Balkan nation of Montenegro is fast becoming a popular tourist destination. Stunning beaches, verdant mountains and postcard-perfect historic towns attract a growing number of visitors each year. Add a mild Mediterranean climate to the mix, open up opportunities for active activities ranging from mountain biking to white water rafting, and it's no wonder that tourism is now the driving force behind the growth of Montenegro's economy.
    Ulcinj
Located in the far south of Montenegro, close to the Albanian border, Ulcinj is an ancient seaport that was once known as the pirate capital of the Adriatic Sea. Today, the city is most famous for its beautiful beaches, of which the sandy stretch of Plazhe and Mahed, or Long Beach, is one of the most popular.
The offshore island of Ad Bojana also offers several picturesque beaches. Minarets rising from the mosques in this largely Muslim city add to Ulcinj's unique appeal, and a stroll along the seafront promenade to enjoy a tasty kebab or a rich cup of coffee is just one of the experiences that make a visit to Ulcinj so memorable.
    sveti stefan
Incredibly picturesque, Sveti Stefan is a unique place along the Budva Riviera. It's on a rocky island filled with houses with terracotta roofs. A narrow isthmus connects it with the mainland. From the 15th century, Sveti Stefan housed a simple fishing community. In the 1950s, someone had the idea to nationalize the small village.
Residents were evicted and Sveti Stefan was transformed into a luxury urban hotel. Among his guests were Marilyn Monroe, Sophia Loren and Kirk Douglas. It fell into decline during the dissolution of the former Yugoslav federation.
    Budva
Located at the midpoint of the coast of Montenegro, Budva has a picturesque old town, an abundance of beaches and several important cultural institutions, including the childhood home of Serbian writer and politician Stefan Mitrov Ljubiša.
It's the city's vibrant nightlife, however, that makes Budva the most popular place to visit in Montenegro. At night, revelers crowd the city's many bars, clubs and restaurants and then spend the day relaxing on one of the region's 35 beaches. Those looking for a more relaxed place on the Budva Riviera head to nearby Becici, which offers a relaxed spot and a beautiful sandy beach.
    Kotor
Considered one of the best preserved medieval towns on the Adriatic coast, the fortified city of Kotor is nestled in the steep mountains that surround the deep canals of the Bay of Kotor. While Kotor's architecture reflects the various empires that ruled the region, it is best known for its Venetian-flavored historic center, dominated by the 12th-century St. Tryphon Cathedral.
The carved stone altar in the cathedral is an exquisite example of the masonry skills for which Kotor was known in the Middle Ages. Walks along the upper city walls to the hilltop fortress of Kotor reward the hardier walkers with breathtaking views of the city and the deep-water bay.
    Piva Lake
Excursion to Lake Piva. According to the opinion of many tourists, the North region is the most attractive part of Montenegro. Exciting landscapes, beautiful lakes, spectacular viewpoints, the interesting history of this part of Montenegro will not leave you indifferent.
Furthermore... just the ride itself is breathtaking. Set in beautiful surroundings, with the peaks of Durmitor, Volujak and Ledenica in the distance, Pluzine takes the title of the youngest city in the region.
