    5 points of damage reduction doesn't sound like a lot, but when you realize that it all adds up, it's worth it. Sure, you won't be as well off for a bigger attack, but think about just how much damage overall that would defend against. Also, that 5 damage might be the difference between life and death.

    Fun fact: in the bronze age, before people could mine iron, iron was only found from pieces that came from meteorites and was called the 'metal from heaven.' It was rarer than gold.

    • @RikkuTakanashi
      @RikkuTakanashi 4 роки тому +29

      That makes sense because silver and gold are softer metals so easier to mine, plus less practical for physical labor such as battle or other practical non glamorous uses.

    • @KageRyuu6
      @KageRyuu6 4 роки тому +17

      Which is funny because the primary source of iron prior to the industrial revolution was bog iron, which doesn't really require mining in the tradition since. Though the rarity of iron/steel before it's name sake age was primarily due to the thermal properties of iron, namely that it requires considerable amount of heat to melt, the kind of heat which was only really possible in bloomeries before the industrial revolution, and even then just barely.

      Historically it has less to do with hardness of the metal than than the temperature that they can be worked/smelted, you see forge temperatures slowly creeping up with technology. Cu and Au are however soft and can be found in their native form (nuggets etc), originally forged cold by hammering. This progressed into smelting non apparent ores with low melting temps like tin.

      Tutankhamun was buried with a iron blade commonly accepted to be of meteoric origin. A true possession of kings during the bronze age culture in which he lived. Fighter “uh. 19.”
    Dm “you crit due to your Weapons ability but the evil knight is wearing platemail to where he takes less damage rolled equal to how many dices you roll for damage and it gives you a -5 to damage.”
    Fighter “I rolled 37damage.”
    Dm “Ok so you rolled 4d6 so... his armor decreased the damage by 37-5-4d6. So... that’s 14 damage. And roll 1d4 for bleeding. K so he takes an extra 3. Warlock your turn!”

    You know, another place that could work for things like this would be to look at one of the last of Paizo's Dragon Magazine issues for 3.5 (Unfortunately, I can't remember the specific one at the moment) but it had a lot of fun stuff for smithing and weapon/armor modification/personalization along with some of the various materials published along the way (And the dwarven/elven/ect crafted things).
    A LONG time ago in the pre-Gleemax period when WotC had their message boards, I'd done a whole lot of work at reworking crafting into something that I probably ought to dig up again and see about porting for 5e, a lot of the things there were well received there and seem like they could be used for a system there.

    The Damage Reduction in custom made armor makes kind of sense. You are an adventurer. The kit you wear is quality like a veteran fireman, you're going into danger, expected to take a beating and come out again, you build it knowing there is no question you will get hit. As compared to the guard's armor, always on patrol, most days on a good city, nothing happens. Most of their kit is armingswords and vital-plates. Enough for all to appreciate having it, not enough to encumber them standing around all day. But they definitely want more when the city's under siege.

    Another lovely episode of Table Technician! I would like to suggest for the future of the series, a few things of my own creation that you are welcome to use and tweak. First is language-learning. There aren't many ways in dnd to learn a new language without using magic to learn them all, so I've created a small system for individual words. So, two characters, one of them fluent in the desired language, can spend time teaching new words. The number of words learned is equal to Xd4 plus Y, where X is your Intelligence modifier, and Y is the number of hours spent learning.

    I do like the idea where, outside rare dungeon/boss gear, you can make better then the standard fair that you can already buy. A lot of rpg and most MMO have a crafting system where, sure, the crafted isn't better then the dungeon/raid stuff, but it's still better then shop stuff and makes it easier to get the rare stuff.

    I really like this modular crafting system you've come up with, it's a lot more open-ended than what you see in most tabletop games. That said, I would tread cautiously with the whole Damage Reduction thing, as introducing something that powerful to a system that doesn't natively have it can very easily become wildly overpowered and/or disrupt the intended flow of play. I'll try to explain what I mean somewhat concisely, but keeping stuff like this short isn't exactly my strong suite so sorry in advance.
    That aside, when homebrewing entirely new mechanics into a game I find it's often helpful to consider why the mechanic doesn't already exist in the game when working on balance. In the case of Damage Reduction, the most fundamental reason I can boil it down to is that it clashes what the dice rolls are supposed to be modeling. Specifically, an Attack roll isn't modeling whether or not an attack physically connects with its target, but if it deals damage (which is why things like Armor and Dexterity factor into your AC), and that distinction is significant. If, for example, your Attack roll succeeds against a target, but your Damage roll comes up as less than the target's Damage Reduction, you have two mechanics that are contradicting each other about whether or not you actually damaged the enemy. Unless you want to totally rebuild the combat model around Damage Reduction, the Attack roll should always determine if you hurt the enemy, and the Damage roll should determine how much you hurt them (putting aside things like immunities and explicitly magical forms of damage reduction for the moment).
    As I see it, there are two possible solutions to this. The first is to simply say that Damage Reduction cannot reduce the damage dealt below 0, but that's boring so we aren't going to do it. Instead, I propose that Damage Reduction be applied to the Ability Modifier applied to the roll rather than the roll overall, such that the calculation changes from "(Ability Modifier+Roll)-Damage Reduction" to "(Ability Modifier-Damage Reduction)+Roll." This reduction would not be allowed to result in a negative number being added to the roll, but in realistic play that shouldn't come up very often anyway. The end result is a system that functions more or less the same and doesn't make too much of a mess of the combat system while still making sense from a narrative perspective - the higher-quality armor is reducing the impact the physical or mental strength of the attacker has on the damage of the attack while still respecting the fact that the damage happened (as determined by an entirely different roll).
    Feel free to use this alternate interpretation in your final manual - or don't, it's your book and I don't pay your bills. Credit would be appreciated if you do, but if you want to reserve that for your supporters or something a simple "thanks!" will suffice. Also, if you like the idea feel free to bounce stuff you're working on off me, my brain tends to be well-suited for the task and nothing gets the gears going quite like an actual project (which is unfortunate as I'm terrible at coming up with projects to work on). Love the videos, and can't wait to see what you come up with next!
    Edit: another math thing to consider if you haven't already - will the Damage Reduction apply before or after existing resistances and vulnerabilities? Which you go for could end up having a big impact on the final result.

    One thing I think would be interesting would be to have stat rolls for different stages of the smithing (namely strength roll for the final tempering of the armour/weapon), where a lower roll could give a minute decrease in damage/AC, whereas a higher roll could add a minute increase in damage/AC. Also, with the introduction of a more flexible crafting system for these weapons, personalised gear for different styles of play would be very interesting

    So, I took this a step further, and created secondary classes that level along side the standard classes which allow for certain benefits when creating items of a specific type with specialized subclasses. For example if a player chose a secondary class of a black smith they can choose between a subclass that would let them make better weapons, armor, or something else within the spectrum of that specific tool.

    There's an important point that didn't seem emphasized: Custom equipment is good because they are fitted to the needs of the wearer. Much like tailoring a suit, shaping the armor to fit your warrior's stature exactly dramatically increases the protection it provides and reduces the hindrance it can have to movement or just standing in it for 10 hours straight. It can factor not just the wearer, but even the weapon they use for the best weight distribution for balance and ease of maintenance.
    Some of these specializations might get TOO specific and require retooling the moment you switch weapons or fight in another environment, but it's up to you to decide if it's balanced as a monetary cost or whether to handwave it for convenience of play.

    I wish this was implemented in more games or even added to the manual under crafting. what I have always seen in my games is players sticking with those starting weapons until they find magical stuff. this would add a good in-between if the DM want's to make magic items rare. could even make an entire quest line out of getting the unique metal to craft a powerful weapon

    I did something similiar when I made armor for a fallout server RP, but instead of tiers of materials, I used 'mods' quite literally. I would have added more, but considering they weren't used at all despite reducing certain damage types by half, I decided to hold off. Same with weapons, with mods adding additional damage dice of a different damage type such as Fire, Poison, Energy, and Bleeding.

    Having heavier and more damage reducing armor made of metal might be more available and easier to buy, with the downside that it might not reduce damage to lightning damage attacks and is actually easier to hit with cantrips like shocking grasp. Armor made of exotic monster pelts might give that higher ac and other bonuses without fearing lightning damage as much, but good luck getting those monster pelts in the first place. Also Kanekou pls pls show more storm giantess, your talent for drawing monster anatomy is fantastic
