As someone fond of lip and button piercings (yes those ones), Yikes. I had one character who had a tongue piercing she would use to cast Darkness on.
However, you do have to see the object to target it.
Imagine a class feature that lets you target things you can't see though.

Tried that once, the DM quite reasonably responded by having it spit out the offending chunk of metal - a sword in our case - after a couple of rounds. Even cubes have some basic survival instincts. Fine by us anyway, we wanted the sword for a patron way more than we wanted the cube dead.

Yeah. We were playing a steampunk fantasy world meets Alice in wonderland and one of the main bosses was a clockwork golem. Getting a lucky roll on an intelligent check allowed me to find out that some of the main wiring for this boss was very weak and that heating it would cause it to melt and break. So I used some heat metal on its wiring and took it down by myself in 2 turns.

Ever since I heard of how versatile they are in 5th edition I have wanted to see a party of all bards. A while back I found a gaming webcomic that had a party of all clerics that steamrolled a high level module so a party of the same class, but different enough builds sounds fun- and compared to 3.5 clerics, 5e bards aren't so powerful that this would be broken. But with this video I realized you could have an entire campaign revolve around a band of bards that go and have adventures, which may or may not include asasinations, while under cover as simple musicians.

My god. Every blacksmith in the world must love this spell. Do you know how long a piece of glowing hot steel stays workable? About fifteen seconds. That depends on the thickness of the metal, with thicker stock taking longer to cool because, well, physics. Warmer weather can also assist slightly.
For example, if you get 1 inch stock steel to 2200 degrees you can have a good minute of hammering sometimes before it loses its cherry red color.

Not only can you burn these peoples bodies, but youll probably adhere so much that even if they survive the battle by running away, theyll need a team of clerics and other surgeon equivalents to save em from subsequent damages, if youre playing a very realistic game. So yeah, itll kill em, but itll just prolong it to the point of being a horrendous war crime.

Same with chain mail, you'd typically have a gambeson or an arming shirt under your mail coat or shirt, and I'd imagine it wouldn't take long to grab the mail and pull it off yourself, at the expense of a few bad burns on the cheeks, but still better than cooking. But overall there are a lot of variables that could be called into question with this spell.

One of my first characters was a druid with this spell. The DM went along with my plan to use the spell on the blade of the Fighter's sword, and only the blade portion. This let the fighter add the spell's damage to his attacks. Then he got a magic sword that let him imbue his breath weapon damage (he was a copper dragonborn) into it instead of breathing it like normal. Acid breath buff + heat metal buff = napalm coated magic greatsword. It was badass.

I actually think's it's a neat add to the potential of Buff from Druid and Bard (mainly druid). I would reduce the Buff to 1d8, or 2d8 if the wielder take a disadvantage (choice of the caster) because the Elemental Weapons, a level 3 spell offer only 1d4 damage and +1 to attack. I would also probalby only allow it if the weapon is usable in this state : a spear, greataxe or maul, a Rapier, Arrows, etc. A sword might be abit much

Alignment isn't just about how you outwardly act, but also your internal motivations, and philosophy. A true neutral character may be in a situation where they feel that a murderous rampage is in order one week, but calm down the next, at which point you probably can't even tell the difference between them, and some random good, or lawful aligned character, in that order. Step 2: hand manufacture a trap room in said castle so it has one way in and they can't get out by normal means. And have the entire room coated in metal
Step 3: lure in foes, npc adventurers, the local army, whoever you want really.

Think draugr from skyrim). I threw my dagger at it. I hit a very high hit (like unnatural 20+) Barely any damage and I lost my dagger. Everyone thought it was a pointless attack. Next round. I asked my dm if the dagger would be stuck inside his body. The DM debated for a bit and said that because I hit so high it likely would have been flying so fast that it would be stuck right in it. Like an arrow getting lodged deep.

Stone buildings are fun too! Castles usually are all about fashion and decoration with *gold* in them and, you know it, gold is _metal._ Tapestries hanging from metal poles, suits of armor resting on expensive rugs, weapons mounted on wooden frames... go nuts! everything's a fire hazard now!

Ahh Heat Metal, I remember one of my player's using this spell quite a bit and I could barely keep my laughter in when I heard him talking about how he was going to use it on the boss of the mission they were on... So they go to where this evil paladin lives, after fighting him for a bit the bard uses heat metal and the knight's armor glows brightly from the heat... Then numerous unseen runes on the armor light up and engulf the paladin in a glow of flaming radiance, the paladin not only gets healed but now his AC was greatly increased.
So it turns out this paladin was a follower of a god of fire and metal (home-brew), and for his many years of service he was gifted special armor that absorbs heat and converts it into positive energy and strengthens the the wearer. I gave them a few hints of the knight's god and abilities earlier in the session, but I guess the bard got overzealous.
They still won the fight much to my surprise and pride... Though nearly half of them died thanks to the paladin's attack being increased, turns out someone who with increased strength AND a flaming morningstar can deal a lot damage.

A lot of enemies don't wear metal armor, but there is a unique boss enemy at the very end of the main campaign that does. A real mean SoB that is a powerhouse in both melee and with spells.

As a person that has worn armor and fought with melee weapons (swords mace etc) My biggest problem with the spell is, even if you are using an item made of metal you are usually not in contact with the metal. Especially weapons. Plate armor? You have a gambeson, aketon, padded jack, pourpoint or arming doublet, every weapon in My collection has either a thick leather wrap grip or wooden grip. SO, in My games the bard trying to use heat metal as a cure all in every combat scene quickly gets disappointed when it's not nearly as affective as they want it to be.

I have little to no experience with armor, but the mixture of culinary adventures and a high pain tolerance made me learn firsthand why cheap, thin mittens are a trap. If something's hot enough, you don't have to touch it directly to cause first degree burns. Also wet mittens/traps actually cause worse burns.
I don't know if that's the intention, but to me the spell's damage is less "frying pan" and more "electric oven". There's no way "glowing hot metal" only causes 2d8 damage.

Also said his DM dropped his alignment a few levels when he did that.

I typically play AD&D and it's no joke there either. It's a second level druid spell (which for druids means they get it at second level), and it can target as many man sized creatures worth of metal armor as the caster has levels, and there's no saving throw. First round after casting, no effects, the metal feels warm. Second round, 1d4 damage the metal is extremely hot. Third round, 2d4 damage, the metal is scorching, and whatever parts of the body the metal is touching is "disabled" (not sure what exactly is meant by that) for a duration based on what's being disabled, 2-8 days for hands or feet, 1-4 turns and unconsciousness for head, 1-4 days for body. In AD&D, a turn is also longer than you'd think. A turn is 10 rounds, and rounds are like they are in 5e, one full round of actions from everybody. Possibly worth noting for outside combat applications though, is that in AD&D one round is one minute, so a turn is 10 minutes. Oh yeah, the spell does also keeping dealing damage, but it's honestly not that much, the disabling is where it really shines. In total the spell does 8d4 damage

So stack like 3 or 4 lower level casters and have them "heat metal" on the same target. So like 6-8 D8 per turn. And since it takes like 10 minutes to remove heavy armor ... wellllll

I think it says in the spellcasting section that a character cannot be under the effect of the same spell twice (for example, can't have 2 hastes cast on you). It could be argued the same applies for this spell on the armor, or that having multiple casts of heat metal doesn't increase it's temperature since the spell might only heat it to a certain degree. Not trying to start something, just got me thinking.

@@criyofreeze I'll have to go back and check and look for the actual rule, however the heat metal doesn't deal damage till someone uses their bonus action to deal it. So it can be "heated" for a couple turns but if they don't use the bonus action it doesn't deal the 2d8 damage. So it would just be a dog pile of bonus action uses and their main actions are still open for other spells. I'll have to look for the actual rule though and make sure it's legit.
