🧡 I had Madonna's Like A Virgin cassette tape. Yes Gen X here. Belive it or not Jay, several of the songs from this video were covers from songs of the 50s and 60s. I remember the Breakfast Club song 🎵 It really warms this old heart that there is a Gen Z who appreciates the 80s the way you do 😊
I still have the 12" single of Madonna's Like A Virgin. This and the Rolling Stones Harlem Shuffle sound kind of weird to me, and always made me think the speed on my turntable was misadjusted, when it wasn't.
Don't disagree at all but INXS were incredible and so underrated before 'Kick'. I mean, 'Kick' was a fantastic album but some of my favourite INXS songs are from earlier. Michael Hutchence had such an incredible voice.
KICK was my introduction to INXS. Everyone should check out that album, nit for a review. Just put in your headphones sit back and enjoy. They have never been the after Micheal's passing.
80's Music Rocks! I grew up and became an adult in the 80's. Such a variety. Dance music, Wedding music, Funeral music, Making Love music, Movie music, Breakup and Makeup music, Headbanging music, Hang with your Friends music, Monster Ballad music. You get my drift. Nothing like it since.
There are a lot of great British and American 80's music for sure. But, people keep forgetting about just how great Australian 80's music was. You will hear so many Aussies songs today everywhere you go and not even know they are Australian.
🧡 I had to leave the comment after that 😂 You actually did better than I thought you would. Credit to ads, parents and movies. I like that you're open to learning older songs. It's always good to keep an open mind and you might discover new favorites among your current ones. Or you might discover that some of the newer favorites are actually covers. Of course newer artists are often influenced by older acts and can gain inspiration or ideas from them too. Yes, the Breakfast Club was the first thing that comes to mind for that song. It was so interesting to see your reactions. Yes, Madonna was everywhere back then, as was of course Michael Jackson. So many big names in that list but also a fair amount of one (or two) hit wonders. A lot of genres included in there. The dutchie reference is not referring to Dutch people but a certain recreational substance. Yes, Olivia Newton John was also the one that did Physical. She was more known for her softer, easy listening songs and of course for her role in Grease and other movies.
I've forgotten how many Kylie Minogue songs came out in the 80s. Considering her big hit, Can't Get You Outta My Head in the early 00s. She's still touring!
I'm litsening as I"m working on a project so wasn't going to comment... but when you said you haven't heard "Sweet Child Of Mine" by Guns and Roses.. I have to comment lol.. you definitely need to hear this song. ❤ Love your content, it's so much fun. ❤
Our generation has the best music!! So much so it’s still being played and listened to, to this day and will be for many more years. ❤️. So many memories come up just hearing a song.
Re: cycles of history A couple of truisms: “Nil nove sub sole” - “there’s nothing new under the sun” - meaning everything has happened before. The more you know about the past , the more you can see the present. Keep up the great work 🎉
19 hit number 2? Wow, I didn't know that. 19 was the average age of a soldier during the Vietnam war vs 26 years old for WWII. It was a song about the veterans from that hated war and what they faced by a guy who was 19 when he served. BTW - Kenny Rogers had more than 40 No. 1 hits across more than 55 years of playing. He started his career back in the 1950's & retired in 2015 - sort of. His farewell tour took 3 years until his doctors ordered him to stop in 2018 -- 65 albums, with top selling songs across each of 6 decades (1950's through 2010's). He was a "cross-over" artist who sold into both the pop/rock scene plus country & western across his career.
Janet Jackson, the one that you said was great dancing, is Michael's little sister and she dominated in the 90s. She was super talented as well. Fortunately for her, not the genius that Michael was. I loved her videos.
@@RandomNonsense1985 sigh, yes. I fangirled Michael since the early 70s. I was devastated at both his, um, proclivities, and his death. Why I said Janet was lucky to not inherit his genius. And I will add, his excessive pressure from the age of five. I read a J5 biography book in the mid-seventies and Janet was just looking forward to being a secretary. In other words, she didn't get that pressure. I really enjoyed her talent and fame because I knew she didn't get the JOE treatment. Michael may be a psychological study for generations or even hundreds of years, perhaps, due to his crazy childhood, his genius, and his ultimate dysfunction, to put it kindly.
As a Historian , yes knowing the history behind the people makes you better understand the world as a whole. Best drama, comedy, incest, intrigued and excitement are found in our pasts! Thanks for wanting to explore. 😊
Man, i wish the cuts weren't so short, and some are really strange parts of the songs to choose. I bet you know more of them than you think. Duran Duran was huge ("View to a Kill" was a James Bond movie theme, btw.) A-ha was also big. And that Breakfast Club theme got a great modern boost from the movie Pitch Perfect. A lot of 80s songs got popular on movie soundtracks.
Oliva Newton John sang Magic & Let's Get Physical- she played Sandy in the movie Grease. You should listen to Broken Wings from Mr. Mister. Great song & voice. "Alone" by Heart is amazing. And you should hear it when Ann Wilson was 65 years old at the Royal Albert Hall.
80's was my jam... out of High School and my top 40 DJ career took off! Love this music... and all the memories. Curious what country's list that you took from.
The 1st and 2nd most popular songs in the 80s doesn't even come close to how much great music there was... One of my all time favorite songs came up on this list, (September 1987). You should definitely react some time to "Pump Up The Volume" by M|A|R|R|S
Madonna changed music back then. She was one of the non traditional people that refused the lines of what to wear and how to look. She faced criticism and still became one of the best singers of our time.
I wouldn't call her one of the best singers. Her vocal talent was mediocre compared to other pop stars. It was never in the same league as say, Whitney's. However, Madonna probably had more hits than any other female artist in the 80s, which is why she was called the Queen of Pop. Her music was catchy and she used shock value to stay in the public eye. She was also a good dancer, and she branched out into acting. She was smart and excellent at self promotion, which is why her career has lasted so long.
I was never much of a Madonna fan. She was really into self-promotion. Sure, artists need to put themselves out there, but she was making a spectacle of her private life & I didn't think that was necessary to enjoy music. I never knew who or what Cyndi Lauper was doing & I considered her to be quite different & very talented. I have zero idea of whom Pat Benatar was dating, and she had a unique style and sound. I wasn't very enthralled with Madonna. Madonna was in love with Madonna enough for everyone. Besides, Cher had already done all that stuff. Madonna really wasn't groundbreaking. And Cher had much more talent than Madonna.
ABBA after having been broken up for so many years reformed in 2018 to write some new songs and released the new songs in 2021. ABBA also went into a 3D mapping studio and had 3D moment captures of them preforming a number of songs created. Those 3D mappings of their movements got used to create 3D avatars of the band for a onstage show that is still running you can book to go watch. You see realistic 3D images of the band preforming their hits on stage during the show and simulates a real live performance.
So many greats! Did you say you didn't hear of Billy Ocean? Definitely need to check him out, if so. 😄 ...and Cindi or Cindy Lauper's True Colors was in a Trolls movie.
🤎 Dolly Parton, Kenny Rogers, INXS, Genesis, Phil Collins. John Cougar Mellencamp, Kenny Loggins. One hit wonders from the '80's and all of the "hair bands." That's just pop music and some country crossovers. Late '70's and '80's rock is pretty damn amazing, too. My dad raised me on '60's rock, e.g. Steppenwolf, Beatles, Cream, Jimi Hendrix, etc., so I've always loved rock, hard rock, metal. Country really stepped up in the late '80's and '90's. I'm GenX, born in '71, so the '80's music was the soundtrack of my life. I'll always think '80's music is the best! 😎🔊🎶🎵
Don't worry about making us feel old. We know you're too young to have an awareness of a lot of entertainment from the past. GenX is probably the last generation to grow up with a knowledge of entertainment from the past. When we were kids there were only three networks and a handful of independent TV stations. They played reruns from the 50s and 60s along with the new 70s shows. They showed movies from as far back as the 1930s. We got loads of really old cartoons which featured famous celebrities from the 30s and 40s. We watched talk shows that had celebrities who were famous in the 40s and 50s. We still knew who WC Fields, Mae West, Marilyn Monroe, Abbott & Costello, Shirley Temple, John Wayne, Charlie Chaplin, and Humphrey Bogart were, as well as so many other classics from long before we were born. We grew up with AM radio that played 50s, and 60s, music right along with new music. Later FM radio came along, then cable TV, then VHS players and rental places, then video games, and on and on until the internet and now kids these days have tons more choices than we had. There's no way you can be exposed to it all like we were.
Of course I ❤ your content 🧡 Magic by Olivia Newton John was in Xanadu.. another reason to watch 😊🧡 A dutchie was a word for a joint😅 Kids singing about makes it😂🧡 Soo many great artists for you to check out🧡 Knew them all, because I am addicted to music, always have been, always will be😍🧡 Thank you ✌️🐦🔥✨
I know all of those songs, but this had to be a UK top 2. No one in the USA knows Modern Talking, despite them selling 120 million records world wide. I was really surprised to see them in this list.
Sounds likely...I was 5-15 yrs old in the 80s so maybe that's why I'd never heard of a handful of these, but the one I do not know look and sound like they'd be hits in Europe. My two cents...😁
Think it would be a global top 2, a lot of songs there that only really were hits in the US, up against European and worldwide smash successes. A UK or Europe list only would look very very different.
@ If you ever want an easy give away on if a chart includes the US, look for the big country music stars. Outside of Ireland, the Netherlands and sometimes Germany they have very little presence in European charts. Also will be a lot of solo Beatles and solo Phil Collins overrepresentation and an absence of ska, euro disco, dance, etc... Is a consistant pattern.
@@TtDsufc Thanks, that all makes sense. There were a couple of Kenny Rogers on that list, with and without Dolly Parton for example. I'm not a fam of Country per se, but love some Kenny and Dolly songs. 😍
I love 80 music. I was in my 20s by that time and had so much fun with my friends at the disco and parties. I believe the best music belong to that decade. After more than 40 years you can listen this music and catch new generations.
The fact that you know as many of these songs as you do is impressive. Just think about it. 1985 was 40 years ago. I doubt many people your age back in 1985 knew that many songs from 1945. So, it's impressive.
Some of these songs are covers of '50's-'60's songs, but most are fresh. Really should check out the '50's-'60's. You'll be surprised how many songs are familiar. And a lot of these fresh songs are covered & sampled by contemporary artists today. Great music never dies. Thanks for your reaction.
May 1980 - Johnny Logan - What’s another year was the Eurovision Song Contest winner of that year. Johnny was Irelands entry and he went on to win the contest for a second time a few years later.
Survivor, Duran Duran, Bon Jovi, KC & The Sunshine Band, Kenny Rogers, Guns & Roses, Billy Joel, Olivia Newton John, Don McClean, The Police, Air Supply, Prince, Leo Sayer, Blondie, Phil Collins, Sheena Easton, Christopher Cross, Foreigner, Peter Cetera/Chicago, Laura Branigan, Boy George/Culture Club, Spandau Ballet, Debbie Gibson, Queen, Kenny Loggins, John Waite, Billy Ocean, Madonna, Simple Minds, Stevie Wonder, Mr Mister, George Michael, U2, Taylor Dane, Rick Astley, Whitney Houston, Roy Orbison, of course Michael Jackson and Bee Gees all had great songs. Some of those weren't popular at all where I live. Some really sucked. Islands In The Stream was written by the Bee Gees.
Aww at least tell him what they are wearing. A bit short and without rewatching (or just knowing already), it might be hard to notice they are Cap and Gowns from graduation.
Yes. I always think of Don’t You Forget about Me from The Breakfast Club. I’m an 80s baby. Born 1980. I love 80s music. Madonna, Duran Duran were very popular in the 80s.
New sub here, love your voice and personality man! I'm 49 and loved the 80's...1984-1985 was when I really was getting into music, I used to want to be a singer (never had the voice for it) I used to dance and sing with a hairbrush in my hand as a mic lol...I was 10, believe it or not, once in a while, I still do it now! lol...fond memories of me and my dad (although he wasn't a good dad in the long run, left when I was 13 after divorce, still talked on the phone sometimes) he had a record collection and every Friday night he would play like he was a DJ, the kind in a studio, like on the radio, and he would do a countdown and had big ole' bass speakers and lights flickering...it was so fun!
"Wind Beneath Your Wings" sung by Bette Midler is from the movie "Beaches". Great movie! But have tissues ready. 😭 She starred in the movie as well. MJ and Madonna were the two biggest pop stars of the 80s. Phil Collins went solo but also was popular with his band Genesis. There are a lot of popular songs that I'm surprised weren't on the #1 and #2 most popular songs lists. Maybe they weren't as popular based on the songs they were competing with at the same time, though.
April 1981, Angel of the Morning is about having a one night stand. Fortunately, i was too young to realize that at the time because my dad loved that song. 😅

I turned sixty today.I remember when all of the stuff you're playing now was new and cutting edge
Happy (slightly belated?) Birthday! 🎂🎈🎁
Hope you had a fun birthday! 🎉🎂
Yay! GenX begins turning 60 this year! Happy belated birthday! 🎈🎂🎉🎊🎆
My turn comes in about 6 weeks.
@historianKelly 👍🇺🇸 thanks hope you have a good one
Happy belated birthday
I turned 59 yesterday, Gen X is creeping up in the years but we can always look back to our youth.
You absolutely need to check out Duran Duran, INXS and U2.
Yes!!!
Don't disagree at all but INXS were incredible and so underrated before 'Kick'. I mean, 'Kick' was a fantastic album but some of my favourite INXS songs are from earlier. Michael Hutchence had such an incredible voice.
INXS ❤🖤❤️🖤❣️💔🖤💋
KICK was my introduction to INXS. Everyone should check out that album, nit for a review. Just put in your headphones sit back and enjoy. They have never been the after Micheal's passing.
Yes!
I thoroughly enjoyed your reaction. I love seeing younger folks listening to the music I came up on and enjoying it. Subscribed
Billy Joel and Bette Mildler are other rabbit holes for you..
“Shout out to my Gen X mom…” It’s been a minute since I’ve felt this old.
It makes me so happy the Simple Minds made you think of the Breakfast Club. Great song, great movie!
As a Mom, I just want to squeeze you and say, good job! ❤😊
Love Shack! Very fun to dance to. ❤
I've forgotten how many Kylie Minogue songs came out in the 80s. Considering her big hit, Can't Get You Outta My Head in the early 00s. She's still touring!
She’s still making albums too. 😊
Ooh you should look up the B-52s (the ones who did the last song, Love Shack). They were so original and fun!
Of course we all thought of the Breakfast Club. I'm so happy to hear you did too 😊
Here just to upvote Duran Duran ❤
Haha, yep Breakfast Club every time. 😄
(Born in 77 here. ☺️)
There was only about 6 songs I didn't know. God 80s music was good
Irene Cara just has that voice..can never get enough of it.
I'm litsening as I"m working on a project so wasn't going to comment... but when you said you haven't heard "Sweet Child Of Mine" by Guns and Roses.. I have to comment lol.. you definitely need to hear this song. ❤ Love your content, it's so much fun. ❤
Definitely Breakfast Club!! I loved that movie. It took me back to my childhood We were such schmucks in high-school.
Our generation has the best music!! So much so it’s still being played and listened to, to this day and will be for many more years. ❤️. So many memories come up just hearing a song.
Re: cycles of history
A couple of truisms:
“Nil nove sub sole” - “there’s nothing new under the sun” - meaning everything has happened before.
The more you know about the past , the more you can see the present. Keep up the great work 🎉
I would love to see you react to every song in its full version from these decade videos!
Feed the World made me go awww....because a lot of the faces in that video are no longer with us.😢
19 hit number 2?
And unlike Michael, she left the little boys alone.
@@RandomNonsense1985were you one of them??
@@ritasworld6345 bit personal question, doncha think. 😉
As a Historian , yes knowing the history behind the people makes you better understand the world as a whole. Best drama, comedy, incest, intrigued and excitement are found in our pasts! Thanks for wanting to explore. 😊
Incest? What?
you probably heard true colors on a Kodak film commercial
Whenever I see the video for Blondie's "The Tide Is High," I think to myself that the tide probably had some company, IYKWIM.
Stairway to Heaven rendition was A-Mazing!
😂😂😂" whats a dutchie "
He cracks me up...
80's was my jam... out of High School and my top 40 DJ career took off! Love this music... and all the memories. Curious what country's list that you took from.
Many of these songs were released on movie soundtracks.
The Love Shack is a party place. 90% of these songs are worth your time to listen to the entire song, even if you don't do a reaction video.
I don understand how you have not heard of these songs when they are still playing all over the radio and TV.
Not on every channel lol
Love these. Its fun watching the popular songs as you always know what movies were popular at rhe time to as some of the songs were in the movies.
And Cher had much more talent than Madonna.
many of those songs landed in gta vice city soundrack, and the game was instantly more 80's
M/A/R/R/S 'Pump Up the Volume' was an outlier way ahead of its time.
Some of these songs I've never heard of but then another pops up and I'm walking down memory lane realizing I need to add some songs to my playlist!
Including "one hit wonders" amongst your commented solo artists and bands is almost insulting imo...
Janet Jackson choreography. You need to react to her music videos in the 80's.
How can you be British and not know Phil Collins In the air tonight …or The Police where Sting is the lead singer ???
70's didn't *have* music videos until Queen put out the one for Bohemian Rhapsody. 😂
Sorry, there were music videos before that. Even back to the Beatles.
❤ Smokey Robinson
Wait, did you just say you've never heard of Stevie Wonder? Part Time Lover and Superstition are classics! You should check him out!
Of course I ❤ your content 🧡
Magic by Olivia Newton John was in Xanadu.. another reason to watch 😊🧡
A dutchie was a word for a joint😅
Kids singing about makes it😂🧡
Soo many great artists for you to check out🧡
Knew them all, because I am addicted to music, always have been, always will be😍🧡
Thank you
✌️🐦🔥✨
This is your first video to send me right back to the 80's. As a UK base rock nut i know all of them from radio play back in the day.
@TtDsufc Ah, good to know some of these were US only, too.
Yes do an Abba album and Kenny Roger’s.
Kenny Rogers -- check out The Gambler and Coward of the County!
Heart is awesome
I love that observation. Seeing the past helps us understand whats going on around us now.
Survivor, Duran Duran, Bon Jovi, KC & The Sunshine Band, Kenny Rogers, Guns & Roses, Billy Joel, Olivia Newton John, Don McClean, The Police, Air Supply, Prince, Leo Sayer, Blondie, Phil Collins, Sheena Easton, Christopher Cross, Foreigner, Peter Cetera/Chicago, Laura Branigan, Boy George/Culture Club, Spandau Ballet, Debbie Gibson, Queen, Kenny Loggins, John Waite, Billy Ocean, Madonna, Simple Minds, Stevie Wonder, Mr Mister, George Michael, U2, Taylor Dane, Rick Astley, Whitney Houston, Roy Orbison, of course Michael Jackson and Bee Gees all had great songs. Some of those weren't popular at all where I live. Some really sucked. Islands In The Stream was written by the Bee Gees.
3:07 Impossible. Harry Potter didn't exist in the 1980s. The first Harry Potter book was published in 1997.
Aww at least tell him what they are wearing. A bit short and without rewatching (or just knowing already), it might be hard to notice they are Cap and Gowns from graduation.
Ohhh thank you for this one❗🙏🏼😁💯 If only to remind me of "Pass The Dutchie". 😁
🧡🧡🧡You certainly hit the power ballads of the 80s in that one. I love your reaction to FYC blink twice if you need help!!!😂😂😂
Lady, Kenny Rogers a MUST!!!!!!
Chicago was my favorite band of the 80s. Especially, albums 16, 17, 18, & 19.
I think you know more songs then you think, some of them had very short clips and didn't get to the chorus or the most well known bits
I can't stop watching these!!
April 1981, Angel of the Morning is about having a one night stand. Fortunately, i was too young to realize that at the time because my dad loved that song. 😅
as someone who is getting older now, my time was special when it came to music. it was all about the "hair bands" you should react to the video "Top 25 Greatest Glam Metal Songs Of All Time" these are the bands i worked my butt off to go see in concerts all over the mid west of america!
