When Tommy Shaw presented this song to the band it was a folk song, not quite a ballad but slower. Vocalist and Keyboardist Dennis DeYoung suggested they make it a rocker. A great example of multiple talented musicians working together to create a classic!
Actually tommy and jy are the rockers of the band - that's why they're still touring.
@@andreadeamon6419 that is not really accurate. Dennis himself has stated that fact during an interview and JY or Tommy have not disputed that fact. And if Tommy was such a straight ahead rocker. Then explain the folk songs and ballads he wrote?

wow - got a lot to unpack here.
1 - according to a quick search, rhinoceroses is the most correct way to say it. However rhinoceri is becoming more accepted. FWIW, a group of rhinos is called a CRASH. (like a pack of woves, or gaggle of geese).
2 - STYX is the name of the (Greek) Mythological river of the underworld, where one must cross before entering the afterlife. It separated the mortal world from Hades. One would pay "the Ferryman" (aka Charon - pronounced kare-on)
3 - The drummer you raved about - John Panozzo. Yeah he was a beast. He passed in 96 due to complications from alcoholism.
4 - The band formed in 1970 in Chicago. Their first hit single "LADY" (1972) was a huge triumphant hit - though the band only ever had one song reach #1, the contemporary song "BABE" in 1982.
The band is what you would call "progressive rock" or Prog-rock. The primary attributes of the prog-rock subgenre is moderate to great use of keyboards, unique styles and time-signatures in songs, and frequent flow-changes (change-ups) within the song. A lot of 'experimental' stuff. Rush is probably the most iconic of all prog-rock. Despite being considered prog-rock, they do have many songs that have a standard classic rock sound as well, and some songs that resemble stage show (broadway show) performances.
One of the more unique features of STYX was that there were three members who all took turns singing their songs. Renegade was (guitarist) Tommy Shaw. They also have Dennis DeYoung (keyboards) who does mostly ballads and stage shows, and (guitarist) James Young "JY", who has a more raspy grungy classic hard rock sounding voice. Their bassist Charles "Chuck" is twin brother to their departed drummer John.
They had MANY MANY hits over the years and beloved passionately by their fans, but never got the true attention they deserved.

Dennis songs: Come Sail Away, Lady, The Best of Times, Rocking the Paradise
JY songs: Miss America, Snow Blind, Queen of Spades
Dennis is no longer with the band, he left due to differences - he wanted to do more broadway stage show sounding music. He's replaced by Lawrence Gowan.
Tommy left the band in mid-80s and was replaced by Glen Burtnik. Tommy returned to the band in 1996.
Between that tie, in 1990 Tommy formed a "super-group" (term used to describe a band consisting of established stars from other various bands), called DAMN YANKEES, along with Rocker/guitarist Ted Nugent, and good friend Jack Blades (Bassist/vocalist) of Night Ranger. Their song "Come Again" is IMO one of THE greatest guitar songs of all time. Their live performance showcasing Ted on guitar and Tommy on vocals will steal the breath from rock fans from the energy and masterful BEASTMODE of guitar shredding by "Terrible" Ted Nugent!!! Styx are iconic classic rock! Not a bad song in their very extensive catalog! I’ve see them live six times and they are frickin’ amazing! This is a band that you need to crank up the volume!!
More Styx please! There are kinda two faces to Styx, the rocker side your hearing now with Tommy Shaw on guitar and singing because he just likes to shred and then songs you've yet to hear with Dennis DeYoung singing their ballads (so many great slow love songs). Aside from the songs already mentioned, try Too Much Time on My Hands, another rocker. Dennis left to go on his own while Styx continued without him. Both were still touring separately before Corona happened.

When they first hit the scene in the 70's, they were the band no one wanted to admit they liked! Why? I still have no idea, but I myself cannot imagine Rock 'n' Roll without STYX or KANSAS!!!! PEACE!!!!!

Another amazing fact is the group in the Late 80’s called Damn Yankees had the singer from Styx, drummer and musician from Night Ranger and Lenard Skynard and Ted Nugge. Higher by them is fire

I met Tommy Shaw downtown Cincy one morning .. very nice guy ... was funny it's a long story, but watching Tommy shaw on VH1 on TV "where are they now" and at same time him sitting in front of me was surreal..

Both he and Dennis DeYoung have amazing vocals. DeYoung was even in the Broadway touring musical Jesus Christ Superstar he's that good. You should hear him sing Suite Madame Blue live. I've seen them many times in concert and I am going again to see them this summer. I'm taking my son and his family.

Styx in Greek mythology was a sacred river that separated the land of the living from the afterworld. It was a river of hatred and full of everything bad that would make you shudder. When you die you can’t get to the afterworld without being escorted by a ferryman named Charon, for a price. The river was also a goddess, and also a place where gods made sacred oaths, that if they were to betray the oath the worst evil thing imaginable would happen to them forever and ever.

Tommy Shaw the singer and the guy who kills the guitar solo has been one of my musical heroes since I was about 11 - 12 years old. His voice is so underrated. The band is incredible, but I love Tommy Shaw. Genius and he doesn't read music...which is incredible on its own.
The poster that came in The Grand Illusion album hung on my wall for quite some time when I was a kid (I recently found that record and poster on eBay and bought it, since I'm sure I just ripped it down and tossed it at some point). They were my first live concert and I was blown away when the white baby grand piano rose up from below the stage at the beginning of the show. That was a big deal in 1977! Lol. They are amazing, dig into some more of their music!

WOOT WOOT!! Living in a resort beach area, back in the day (79-81) there were lots of places around that rented jeeps...more specific...Renegade Jeeps. A few of us would put our money together, rent a Renegade, pick up a bottle of Reunite red wine, and cruise down Ocean Blvd with Styx cranked up on the player. Renegade is still my favorite Styx song and my favorite jeep. More songs to listen to by Styx are "Boat On A River", Snowblind", "Lights", "First Time", "The Best Of Times", Too Much Time On My Hands", "Rockin' The Paradise", and my favorite ballad is "Babe".

Live concert are on fire! Saw them with Journey and Peter Frampton. Great show. Just good old classic rock. This rock is considered “corporate rock”. In the late 70 to early 80s, bands were writing their own music so record companies needed a new way to make money. Arena rock was invented. Elaborate sets, pyrotechnics, laser light shows etc. The concert ticket was the money. Now a days it’s the only source of income. No one buys records anymore, they listen to UA-cam. Front seat ticket could be $100-200, are now $1500+.

There were three singers in the band. Dennis DeYoung and Tommy Shaw did the majority of the leads, but James Young did an occasional lead. Check out his song Miss America, or Rock N Roll Feeling.
I saw Def Leppard, REO Speedwagon, Tesla in concert and Styx was supposed to be with them and they had to cancel the tour. I was SOOO bummed cuz I was so excited to finally see them. The songs Dagmar mentioned pretty much pick one. Great reactions as always. Don't forget to do Jinjer, Pisces! Tatiana's voice is so amazing it usually shocks reactors how good she is🙂
I saw Styx and Kansas together in concert many years ago. Two of my favorite bands from my teenaged years and I was able to bring my teenaged daughter to that concert. It was fantastic on so many levels!

River Styx trivia... Ancient Greeks put coins on the eyes of the dead so they would be able to pay the boatman Charon to ferry them across the Styx to Hades and not be stranded on the wrong side as a rootless shade. The moon of the planet Pluto (Roman equivalent of Hades) is called Charon.

Bruh, I know you know who KANSAS is. Kansas was the band from Topeka that inspired the members of STYX and the reason their music has a similar sound. STYX even opened for Kansas. Great road stories when you can find them, (You just have to sort through them and filter out the facts from the evidence presented...lmao...The bands' story is intrigueing and very, well, in my personal opinion, enlightening and entertaining.
