Haha definitely! I would love it if Ren Klyce/Michael Semanick went through the motivation for each layer and how it was panned in surround sound. Especially those handheld concert recordings!
I’ve always loved this scene due to the really unique approach they went with the sound design. Making the music a bit louder than the dialogue was a genius move on their part, it really sold the location. Awesome work again guys :) Keep at it
Thanks! Yeah I think it's definitely a risky move to add all that distortion since you sometimes struggle to understand the dialog, but the realism makes it so much more interesting and engaging.
the way they treat sound just make sense! Splitting the freq since they propagate separately and low pass it since high freq tend to attenuate more than lows. The distortion mimicking speaker behavior is the strawberry on the cake!
I'm pretty sure they are, as they were provided by one of the mixers, Michael Semanick. They are most likely changing and evolving in the mix depending on the shot, and also to keep it interesting and natural. The layers that confuse me are the handheld concert recordings. I still have no idea where those fit into the picture 🤷♂️ Thanks for watching!
Awesome video. I just rewatched this on TV a few weeks ago and this scene in particular was extremely difficult to hear the dialogue in the mix. It may have been compression the broadcaster added to their file but it was basically unintelligible.
Mackie is (was?) a very common outboard mixer. My guess is that since they're pretty common in club/concert situations they were looking to get some authentic analog clipping sounds. The real mystery for me is what the concert recording layer is there for 🤔

I still can't believe it didn't win the academy award for sound mixing
That’s a lot more treatment on the music than I expected. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks so much for your interest. I'm glad you're enjoying my posts!
This is one of the things that struck me with this movie, how they treated sound. Very impressive.
Found this channel just today, absolute gold of knowledge. Fantastic presentation too.
Thanks so much, I really appreciate it!
It sounds like a scene in a club mixed by someone who's never been to a real club.
No way ! All those "effects" ??? that's insane
Professor is showing us this video in class now
This was great! I was surprised by the idea of adding distortion specially behind dialogue...but it worked!

Definitely, I just wish I knew how they utilized those handheld concert recordings!
This is helping me a lot with my music.
Great video!
SynthHacker Thanks Tom!
Again amazing! :-)
Thanks so much!
Why was an MP3 track used instead of a lossless format?
My best guess is it makes the final sound more "distorted".
Pretty sure it was used because that's what a club DJ at the time would have used. :)
Fantastic
Thank you!
legendary content
Haha thanks!
excellent video. are all these layers present in the final mix?

What is the Mackie distortion layer?

Way too much filtering and unnecessary distortion on the music.
