      We wanted to set ourselves the challenge of doing something like this in a day at the time. Definitely planning a more leisurely cycle tour in Ireland in the future. We agree there is plenty to see

    Was just googling to see if this was do-able in a day, glad to see you made it. Will see how fast I can get to Mullingar first and then do the whole thing. Have a gravel bike and sort of doubting that the 40 tooth is going to give me enough momentum as I'm always spinning out on it

      We rode on gravel bikes and I had a 42 tooth on the front.

    Wow. That's what I call over packing. Why? Galway to Dublin is a 11h ride. At best of times. Especially with drop bar bikes. You can get food on the way, weather can be well predicted for the one day and you can take train/bus back. Unless it's a 2 day ride and you are actually "bikepacking". (Which never includes backpack). But then the title doesn't make sense.
    I done the ride in 8h with bus to Galway and ride back overnight, on road bike, with 8L saddle bag for rain/cold time clothes and food frame bag and spares top tube bag. With a dinner 1/3 way in and a pint after midnight, midway. With few friends. Great craic.

      @seektravelride9870  10 місяців тому +2

      We did Dublin to Galway in a day but continued bikepacking further on this trip so this was not a day trip as we continued exploring more of the Wild Atlantic Way afterwards.
      The extra gear was because of electronics we needed to take with us as well which we couldn't accommodate with our bikepacking bags. We definitely don't recommend long tours with a backpack and switched up to a pannier and rack system afterwards.

    Nice video but I wish it contained more info about your route. The Royal Canal Greenway doesn't go all the way to Galway, obviously. I'm interested to know how you got from Athlone or Cloondara to Galway.

      @@seektravelride9870 You done the right thing. That straight 40 I found to be like a religious experience and felt like a buddist monk emerging from a cave at the end. Still, I tip my hat to you because it is a epic journey and to have someone to share it with must be a blessing.

      Brilliant - whilst a long day in the saddle it is a great achievement to look back on now. A fantastic ride and of course doesn't need to be completed in one day! If you do go for it all in one go - the only bit of advice is - no backpacks and order two pizzas at the finish!

    Great video it's looks like you were on gravel bikes or using gravel tyres would a road bike with 28c tyres be suitable or do you need something bigger

    • @seektravelride9870
      @seektravelride9870  2 роки тому

      Thanks David. Yes we were both on gravel bikes with 42mm tyres but the only sections of dirt we encountered were along the canal and none of this was particularly rough. It was hard compacted granite. I would say it is definitely doable on 28c tyres - and would certainly also make for a quicker trip. Of course we were blessed with blue skies and warm weather. If it was rainy and wet it could make the canal sections a bit tricky and slippery on a road bike. Hope that helps.

      We left Malahide at 5:00am and rolled into our accommodation just after 8:00pm. Our actual ride time was 11hrs 20mins. If our bikes weighed less we would have been able to increase the speed a little and reduce the time

    The reason they are straight is because they were used as tow paths for boats. The boats being pulled by horses. They were effectively the first motorways in Ireland
