Not only it was easier since they already have the source idea for it instead of having to create original story, but these cover stories are wayyy more interesting than the fillers. Maybe they get bad ratings back in the day when viewers only care about luffy cus the series is not as mainstream as before, and hopefully now the viewers will accept it more if toei ended up adapting the fillers
That could work, they kind of did something like that by adapting Jango's Dance Paradise into a short coupled with the second movie, it does change a few things by including the Straw hats and doesn't show Jango joining the marines.
@@obinator9065 Pretty close but they got shown in the main anime so they aren't OVAs, and OVAs (Original Video Animation) are usually anime that is realeased straight to the public without a broadcast on tv (the anime episodes) or thearte (the movies); however since the term OVA get misused a lot (example: some people call the LIVE ACTION Jojo Rohan show an OVA, which is wrong as it was broadcast on tv and is live action) I can forgive you for the small mistake. As pointed out in the video, Wapo (Drum Island villain) got a flashback during a Levely arc episode. THe Straw Hats did also get some filler episodes in Amazon Lily and Post War arcs showing them before their time skip training.

The absolute comedy of Caribou substituting as Che guevara's face and then being an absolute Leech and creep to Luffy in the prison, asking Luffy to share earnings he got from his own hard work.
If I'm not mistaken Luffy not only did share in the end but Caribou kept inside himself several tools and weapons necessary to take the prison later, not to mention that Luffy made a speech to Udon's inmates about being a foreigner who will bring food to that country again and beat Kaido, so, maybe Luffy was the revolutionary all along lol

When it comes to caribou I like the idea that from now on he just seems to fail into whatever adventure the strawhats are going to be in sometimes rather than an explanation of how. Like when caribou showed up at wano i found it hilarious that he just seems to be at the right place at the right time but for entirely the wrong reason

Didn’t notice the cover stories were actually side stories until post time skip during my first reread (after fishman island for sure) then during my 2nd and 3rdish reread I made sure to pay close attention

My favorite of these is when we checkup on the Kung fu dugongs who have a statue to luffy and are still training like they were taught by him. Oh I hope they come back in the final war arc
I loved the buggy and the coby episodes! I did kinda hate how they framed the Coby mini arc though. They kept showing the straw hats at the start on the Mary, making you think it was a normal episode, only to have Luffy see a newspaper or be reminded in conversation of Coby's existence, then they'd have him say "I wonder what he's up to...." then they'd cut to Coby the rest of the episode. It was through that, that we were introduced to Garp in the anime though so idk how you could hate it. I can see how it might be seen as too filler-ish because of the framing device of using Luffy though. If you're gonna give a cover story it's own episodes then commit all the way, don't half ass it.
I'm really hoping the Straw Hat Grand Fleet covers stories get a chance to shine if they're going to become relevant sometime after Wano (Particularly Bartolomeo's)
I would rather have filler pertaining to non-main characters that in some way impacts the story later on, as opposed to filler based around the straw hats that isn't canonical. It's kind of cool to check up on other characters or receive a hint to whether they will show up again rather than appear out of the blue being way stronger or something.

Yes! As an anime-only fan who is definitely getting more and more interested in switching to the manga, I have been waiting for a good video on the cover stories! I have to either finish the remaining 70 some episodes of whole cakes island, or figure out which manga chapter episode 806 equates to... I barely made it this far, starting from episode 1 a couple months back, having never seen or read any of this stuff before. Now I'm hooked but the anime pacing is mind numbing. Can't take it anymore. Side tangents aside, thanks for the upload!
Chapter cover stories are the best, they give additional life to the world of one piece and serve as nice short break from the main story. I'm glad you're bringing some attention to them!

3 days ago I decided to read One Piece from the begining since I knew I missed some things from cover stories in the manga and I'm currently in Skypea and now know how Jango became a Marine and how Hatchan met Camie and Pappag, I'm currently seeing what happened to Wapol after he got blasted from Drum
I want the last battle of one piece being King Of Pirate's Rufy and Admiral Coby, ending in none of them winning. Also i love cover storie's. And Coby is one of my fav character's.
Honestly, I would rather have a Cover Story episode or two than a few filler episodes, at least then Toei can delay the story a little and still give us un-filler-ized One Piece. But they decided that filler was more important than cover stories. RIP Anime onlys like me.
the wapol cover story feels to me like the equivalent of waluigi having enough of being denied super smash bros./the wario series(seriously for being stated as wario's comrade he's not even made a real cameo in land or ware and honestly get more closer relationship from the interactions with the warioware gang & wario.) that he forms his own spin off series and hooked up with captain syrup.
I switched to anime after thriller bark... Animes fun and I don't mind watching things in color and experiencing all those godly actions but cover stories were always missed!

I barely made it this far, starting from episode 1 a couple months back, having never seen or read any of this stuff before. Now I'm hooked but the anime pacing is mind numbing. Can't take it anymore.

Chapter cover stories are the best, they give additional life to the world of one piece and serve as nice short break from the main story. I'm glad you're bringing some attention to them!

Honestly, I would rather have a Cover Story episode or two than a few filler episodes, at least then Toei can delay the story a little and still give us un-filler-ized One Piece.
But they decided that filler was more important than cover stories.

the wapol cover story feels to me like the equivalent of waluigi having enough of being denied super smash bros./the wario series(seriously for being stated as wario's comrade he's not even made a real cameo in land or ware and honestly get more closer relationship from the interactions with the warioware gang & wario.) that he forms his own spin off series and hooked up with captain syrup.
This video actually made me give the manga a try and I'm super glad I did. I was anime only all the way up until the Wano raid started

I switched to anime after thriller bark... Animes fun and I don't mind watching things in color and experiencing all those godly actions but cover stories were always missed!
