Abandoned Larundel mental asylum - The most haunted place in Australia

- Mont Park Hospital for the Insane was opened in April 1912. Its proclamation as a Hospital for the Insane was published in the Government Gazette on the 23 October 1912.
First patients admitted to Mont Park were all farm workers and artisans who laid out the farm, roads and gardens. In 1912 at Mont Park there were blacksmiths, workshop employees and 110 carpenters. 212 patients were employed in farming duties and 106 worked in the gardens. Excess produce not required by other asylums was sold. The farm buildings were extensive with hay sheds, store rooms for vegetables, glass houses and pig and calf pens. Only remnants of these buildings remain and are used by La Trobe University as store rooms. These buildings were constructed around a large cobbled basalt courtyard. The largest building was the milking shed, which had a well-laid brick floor, cambered and angled for drainage.
When it opened, Mont Park Hospital was fitted with many facilities far ahead of its time such as a gymnasium, electrical apparatus for physiotherapy and a Red Cross rest room. Patients not working were confined to their wards or in airing cages, which were small and overcrowded. Patients were restrained using straight jackets, skull caps, locked boots or padded cells.
Farming continued for many years until residential development encroached along Plenty Rd. and people began to complain in newspapers about the smells coming from the hospital grounds from the vicinity of the milking sheds and piggeries.
In 1915 a ward at Mont Park was taken over as a Convalescent Military Hospital. An agreement was made with the Defence Department for the latter to erect the Mont Park central block for use as a Military Hospital. This hospital was generally referred to as the Military Mental Hospital. It was also variously known as the Military Mental Block. Apparently ex-military personnel with chronic psychiatric illness were housed there. The military block at Mont Park was closed in 1924 and handed back to the State for civilian mental cases.
Mont Park also had its own separate hospital for any of the patients' medical and/or surgical needs, called MSU (Medical Surgical Unit). The MSU were staffed by general nurse's who had little to no mental health training, leading to abuse of the patients receiving medical care.[citation needed]
It was closed in the late-1990s. Mont Park was closely linked with Plenty Valley Repatriation Psychiatric Hospital and Larundel Psychiatric Hospital, which both closed in the late 1990s. These sites are also being redeveloped.
The complex was served by the freight only Mont Park railway branch line.
The empty land was used for the establishment of La Trobe University in 1967. It is now the site of Springthorpe Housing Development. Part of the old patient hospital is occupied by La Trobe University for administrative offices.

I worked at Mont Park, Larundel and Bundoora Repat as a psychiatric nurse in the 80s. I never felt haunted or scared by the places, or even unsafe. As for criminally insane, the most I encountered were at the Yatala Prison in South Australia in the wing for the mentally ill. Prisoners there were assessed to see if they were mentally fit to stand trial. I think people who don't know try to make mental illness seem scary or dangerous. The patients were just troubled people who needed help.
I lived I'm Bundoora from 2014 -2021. Now living in qld. It's strange, for a place with such a history, I felt calm whenever I walked by there. Almost daily. Even where the Polaris shops are etc. One of my favourite places to just chill . One of the renovated buildings in front of the park, oneof the best places to think and gain clarity. There's a strangely calming energy, but I did feel an intense loneliness, especially at sunset. Not a dark feeling, just painfully lonely. That's what I seemed to pick up. Although one thing to note. When they started digging it up and renovating etc, i went through many major life changes abd thifns were chaotic. It seems calmer these days, or st least since I've moved away. Oh how I miss home. That building/set of buildings is a huge part of my life and now that I live in another state, miss it a lot. Out of all areas I've lived in, Bundoora seems to be the place that feels most like home. Would love to know some of the actual history from someone who worked/lived there much earlier than I did.
Both my brothers ended up in Larundel in the mid 80's. One of them hooked up with a girl there and she was given shock treatment. I visited them a few times with my mother. It was a very sad time in my families life.
I went here recently. While its definitely creepy walking through the dark hallways with it's broken windows and dilapidated floors, there is something almost beautiful about it. Especially that isolated outdoor courtyard in the middle. Beautifully eerie is the best way to describe it.
Was it easy to get in?
thank u for not mentioning my inability to climb fences 😭😭
Did you get to read the things written in the courtyard? Creepy
My mum was put in there in the 70s as a little girl l used to freak out every time l visited my mum with my brother, seeing my mum like a zombie really freaked me out, there were times she didn't reconise us because of all the medications she was on, l cried every time l went to visited her and she was also put in Mont park mental hospital, she had shock treatment the lot, rest in peace mum l love you to bits 🌹
That’s so sad! Can I ask what she was admitted for?
@@rebekahritchie9012 Hello Rebekah,Jodie Butler replying to your question,my mum had a nervous break down the Dr's and Psychiatrist diagnosed my mum with borderline Bipolar/scisofrenic disorder, l remember being very young and seeing my poor mum on a lot of medications, most of the time when my brother and l would turn up she wouldn't even know we were there, you know the very sad thing is when they finally let her out which was after a few years of course she came out and then she got cancer and passed away at an early age, l was just a teenager when my dear mum passed away those memories and images have scared me for life. Test In Peace mum, l miss her everyday Rebekah💖
@@jodiebutler146 so sad.....I'm just shocked they put kids in there. So did she have a nervous breakdown as a kid? I'm not even sure what that would look like, perhaps just a temper tantrum, or if she was a teenager then it wld have been more of an anxiety attack right? Astounding they put young people in places like this. RIP to your lovely mother.
So this is where one of my relatives spent his final days…rest in peace
I found daytime investigation more rewarding than night time , in fact a warm sunny Sunday April afternoon was where I had my worst encounter , 3 friends went into a room but I went in the room opposite and walked through what felt like a wall of cold air but I continued to take photos , I was suddenly overcome by the fear that I was about to be murdered , then I seemed to be in two dimensions , both the kitchenette and also in a yellow sky dump yard which was depressing to the extreme , I knew it was hell. My physical body seemed to pull me back to reality and I screamed for my friends who came running in , one friend claims to have seen what appeared to be a man running out a connecting doorway , I didn't see anyone but my nerves were left shattered
Shut up fake as shit 🤣
Was it a man with a top hat??
@@ruzicaakarose2605I couldn’t see the entity , I just felt the presence

R.I.P SMORGYSSSSS, so sad it burned down...
Worst day
That place was the best
100% an insurance job though
i worked outside it the other week it's still there and looks the same
@@jackrule9303 what are you talking about? 😆 they’re apartments now
@4:25 No way it was me that was driving past the front of the building in my Red Golf Mk6 GTI, I saw yous two walking out of your car, you told me you were doing drone shots, sorry guys didn’t mean to make yous feel weird, Very nice video btw! Really enjoyed it.
Haha nah didn’t make us feel weird at all! My wife was already creeped out as it was lol
I've seen you
Entire building is now gone
Last week me and 3 of my mates (we are all 15-16 years old) went to try explore the building, but building is blocked off with barbwire fences, we walked around the building a few times and there was ways to get in but they looked way too difficult to jump over or enter. We were about to jump over and go in but we got cops called on us or we heard sirens in the distance so we had to go away and we haven’t gone back. Does anyone know anything about the building and how to get in if yes please tell me on how to get in because we really want to explore it.
if you have been there or know anything about it please reply back to this comment thanks.
Ima try get in with some mates soon
@@ethanprimmer it’s burnt down 😔
I’ve been in there to explore heaps of times and I did ouija in there. I’m telling you it’s not haunted anymore, too many people have explored it imo. My friend used to say there was a mass grave. Also I met a guy who was put in there in the 70s (I think 70s anyway) it was because the police were trying to beat up his brother, he was a pro boxer and took on three of them so they chucked him in larundel and ruined the rest of his life.
My mum had to work at larundel for her nursing corse idk how long I think she worked there for a few months.
She said that all the patients were all on high medication so they didn’t like get aggressive. My mum had one bad incident when she worked there. A man pinned her down and the man was schizophrenic. The guards took him away and she was fine. She also said that the place was not very decorative like they had no paintings it was all white walls and a sad place
Damn that’s scary
Oh crap- I've actually been in there. It had a very negative vibe...
Ye same I saw a figure like a girl
I slept there overnight with 6 mate
I spent from midnight to 3.30am in there maybe 7-8 years ago and felt absolutely nothing and heard nothing except my friends. And I am a sensitive. so I can feel when there are spirits nearby. if that place is haunted then decidedly no ghost was home that night.
I drove by this site about 10 years ago..there was bulldozers there demolishing some old buildings for the new builds out back. I assumed all of the old buildings would've gone, so it's amazing to see what they've done with the place! Thanks for the tour, will have to get back that way one day 😁
Great vid as usual. But I though port Arthur and Ararat jail were the most haunted.
I went their today and it was pretty scary but sick at the same time.
I stayed in there over night ...ive been there twice i felt like i was walking around the place for hours was pretty creepy
beautiful shot mate !
My mum literally lives up one of the roads near it, she went there as a kid, creepy stuff...
Yeah same as my grandparents!
I went in there when i was a teen to visit a family friend. He was a Vietnam veteran and had a bad episode tried to kill us all in the house scary shit
The fact that I drive past it everyday bc I live so close to it 😭
is it still standing? or has it been knocked down
I spent a week at larundel
The year before it closed to get my mental health on track and yes it’s haunted as
My mate lives at the hotel across the road
I went in there for a few hours and I didn’t hear or didn’t see anything at all
me too
manage to scare some kids that came in later though :)
That's how it is, never housed Victorias Dangerous Criminally Insane, they were held in Melb. Those that died were natural deaths.
I worked there for a little over 13yrs till it's close, even took a group of mates in for an afternoon/spent most of the night. Nothing scary, no bumps, nothing. Just teens and a couple of adults that came to explore and left disappointed.

Maihan Khan could we still enter the asylum now? I am from sydney and wondering if i could go and explore the place witha. Few friends soon

You need a small foldable ladder to climb on to a 2nd level walk way.
There were 2 security guards patrolling the perimeter, so you got to climb the small fence first.
Its not haunted or scary inside. The security guard is your biggest problem.
I use to live on springthorpe boulevard, my house was across from where the really insane were. I often got an uneasy feeling around the old buildings. I once sore ghosts across the road. My dad use to be a security guard there before they knocked all the buildings down, i still remember what it use to look like
Wow! That’s so crazy! I might have to go back in the middle of the night
@@MuiTube the old buildings across from where i lived are heritage listed so they should still be there
Mate that voiceover at the start… haha nah video was cool. Drone footage was sick. The lighting panel actually did a lot better than I would have thought.
Haha I didn’t want to do the voice over at all. But the drone footage was amazing but a little long for someone to just sit there and watch it. So I thought the voice over would break it up a little
Yeah the lighting panel is epic
When i was studying in La trobe every semester i used to bet with new students of going in there and staying alone for an hour from 3-4am in the morning.. almost did that 7 times, never anything happened, even i used to beg and shout if there was anything please show something but nothing happened.
I live like 4 minutes away from this place wtf
I heard the music box during the day on the ground floor. But it was too dark to see anything
Interesting place. I don't think I would want to live in those even if there fixed up. Just the history would freak me out. I'm traveling around the USA in my 25 foot class A Winnebago Warrior motorhome with my little dog Tinkerbell making videos for my channel. I'm in Phoenix Arizona right now.
Yeah I agree!
Thanks sounds great! I love the US!!
I'm so sadden to see how it has end up I lived not far from there and they could of left how it was and turn it into a museum, or hotel or something now the history of bundoora has gone for good
Bro you should come to Perth An go too The Fremantle Prison it's not Abandoned but been shut since the 90s but you can take a tour an take Videos and Pictures
Why am i creeped out
Don't believe everything you hear, the place is decrepit now, it was once beautiful. It's good for an old wives tale or two these days.
Used to ride my bike though there on the way to school. Was still parts open back then. Went to macleod tech. Seen some interesting things.
Around 2010 few times went in
I wish I can go there
Who the heck would want to live there, not me that’s for sure !
did you ever get to greenvale
I reckon id rather live in the Pentridge estate
Def music true herd it day and night best to go in day best buy yourself you feel what's in there
Loved the intro mate I was there a couple of weeks ago and they had a heap of workers there cutting the grass
Love to be able to get in
Yeah same here mate
What part of the us are you talking about? I live in Orange County CA. The cost of living is very high. It varies greatly depending on what part of the country you are talking about. New York City is even higher.
Just from the places I’ve been in the US. I’ve spent a ton of time in Southern California! The house prices are nothing compared to in melb
We use go there every night I got so many picture of the place and the music bix is real I did find a newspaper back in the 1955 and a bottle that has a name on it larundel mental asylum got so many picture and miss the place
C’mon bloke, no research in this at all. I’m from Greensborough and can pull more off the top of my head regarding facts. Drone work was sweet.
Go film it with all ya facts then , bloke.
@@MuiTube I made a small mistake, KID
I live in Geelong with my daughter and 3 grandkids it’s expensive to rent and buy here but in mlb were you guys are you have so more to do cheap more transportation too my daughter miss living in mld
Yeah I’m in Geelong a lot. It’s like my second home haha!
We used to drive through to the other side there was a wire cage where they kept people we used to get out the car and talk to them... They always wanted cigarettes...🤔⚘
Holy fuck I miss smorgys used to go every birthday my family had
Same.. now my parents live in an apartment there after they retired and had to sell the family home in Mill Park. I just can’t believe that they live there.
As a Paranormal investigator there is no such place as the most haunted location. There is no most haunted location set your cameras EMF meters, Motion sensors or vibration sensors in front of your cameras left overnight to gather vital evidence.
Omg, I love restoration but... Nope, this one is not for me. To scary and sad.
Haha ditto
Did he tell you the spot to get in?
Patrick McCarthy you mean ya mate? We spoke about it. But I’m more worried about getting back over lol
whats the spot
I'm 10 and freaking wachting this
Diecy big deal doesn’t mean your cool
Congratulations
Man I love going to university next to this place 😂
Daniel M is it still there?
Ashley Gibbs yeah some of it’s still up, some of its already apartments. Its hard to get in now though :(
THEY WILL NEVER GET IT DONE....AUSTRALIA IS IN A CRISIS.
Ok ok jesus!
Can u still get in there
No unfortunately it burnt down 😞
i have got a vid of the music box, it plays at midnight almost every night!!!!
montpark is also located further back from here with jane field asylum not to much further away too.
Trippa vpi I remember my friend telling me about that
Can anyone still go there in 2024?
Yes
I was. On the tram
The fun thing is that I counted at least four videos on UA-cam claiming they show the most haunted place in Australia, each time with a different place !!!
You should talk with the author of the video showing Monte Cristo house, who claims this is also th emost haunted place, because one of you is clearly lying then...
Angueran DeLaMouliniere calm down lol. It’s just a title of a video mate lol
Scotty , don't tell us your scared of ghosts lol
Not really. But terrified of the dark haha
40 years ago a mate of mine was in there for a stint..,.crazy fucker was trying to grow spaghetti in my ex Mrs terrarium (among other things) , turns out his plans to start a spaghetti farm ,weren't to be 😎
im going here :)
You know, You sound like lithium is bad.I take it daily and i am still alive and ok, if i didnt have it id be in a place like this.so please get informed about lithium before making judgements.
we go to school there yeeyee
Why people just film building it is so annoying about title ''haunted'' it should be fun not scary, or bizarre things and conversations about the building.
The most haunted one is in allarat
I know I always drive past it it always makes me sivver
Is it still there
Yes sir
do gooders closed it down with the help of Jeff Kennet.and you wonder why.mental health. homelessness.drug addiction & suicide are now skyrocketed in society.. they've been pushed onto the streets
There’s also a few secret tunnels from underground that can lead you to the basement of larundel
Oh really!!
where do the tunnels start?
No there isn’t any tunnels.... been there 100’s of times , no tunnels 😞
Went under the building didn't find much
Trippa vpi they’re extremely hard to find. Well I haven’t been to Larundel in about a month, I’m sure There’s now construction around the site
Really enjoyed your intro with the drone footage. Such a spine tingling place. Who would want to live in a place that's hunted nope not me
Yeah not me haha
The Happy Canadian I live near it
This was a really cool video despite not being able to get in, I enjoyed your facts and stories, you should try and do that more! Sucks that I couldn’t go to Smorgys
Thanks mate!
Smorgys was the best!
I have been here multiple times and they are security but mainly patrolling at night, I’ve been chased out of here before. My grandmother worked there as a nurse and my grandfather as a Gardner. My mum also went their for family days for holiday seasons. Apparently there was a cage on the grass for pedophiles were that would be able to get outside time. My grandmother was also followed when walking home by a patient who got out and tried to stab her.
OMG.....i feel like this story needs more info, like did she run home and call police, and how did the guy get caught? Hope I'm not being insensitive, I'm just interested in true crime, and also worried for your grandma. Also that cage sounds so weird, so creepy..... I mean the paedo could still look at the kids, that's just eerie..
The music box is true I’ve heard it
Spent 4mnths in secure here in 97. I was one of 2 who hadn't killed. Largactil injections, shock therapy and yes the place is haunted. Some 'interesting' characters there, Bobby 'white rabbits' Barron to name one. I'd really like to see it now.
Tried to get in there last year got under the whole in the fence with all our equipment but didn't have the tools to get into the building cos everything was bolted shut, was a little disappointed. Has to get out quick though cos there were tradies close by watching us
I grew up in Millpark me and my mates used to catch the tram an explored most of the place in the early 2000s it was like a little town some of the building still had electricity while abandoned we used to take a stereo and have parties there But then security tightened up because someone lit one of the buildings on fire
I had a few friends tell me some fucked up shit while they 'visited'..wild..
is it still standing? or has it been knocked down?
I'm a local now in Qld. I couldn't believe it when mum told me they were turning it into housing estates! She's a nurse and has a few good stories!
My mate walked into the building and said there was a girl in a white dress and later on they took a photo and there were red eyes
Epic intro mate.
Thanks boss!
I find it disturbing that people think this place is entertaining or a joke. Many people were so sick and riddled with mental health back in the day and they didn’t have the meds or support network we are so blessed to have now. People with simple mental health disorders like depression or anxiety would be committed for months on end exposed to drug trials like test rabbits and shock therapy amongst other things. My mother was committed here and she committed suicide. This is a place of sadness and despair and I find it offensive people find it entertaining
I was a patient in A ward/ B Ward/Fawkner house and North wards it wasnt that bad I had 21 shock treatments as well I had 5 addmissions this is over dramatic we we sick and some of us were victims of abuse its not haunted at all I was fed 3 cups of Largactil syrup a day
I went there around 2017, took many pictures of the outside. Was tempted to go in but there were workers around
Sad to see what it had become. It’s completely gutted now, I went there today and explored it’s pretty sad very calming though
That’s cool...I just saw Aradale and Beechworth, wasn’t sure if there were any in Melbourne left. And I used to go to uni at la Trobe in 2001...wish I could remember it!!
Great video 👍👍
And no way would I live here...way too many uneasy spirits
I did a ton of research about this place and it's history when I was younger and the most interesting thing I found was music and art therapy was introduced here as well as one of the starting places of Lithum. Exploring this gem was unforgettable some of the best memories
I went there, we were exploring, it was a mildly warm night and the temperature remained consistent through the asylum... we made our way upstairs and walked from the left wing to the right wing... this is when shit got weird, I had a torch, good quality, new batteries and was working like a charm... I decided to go into a room located on the 2nd or 3rd level all the way at the end of the corridor in the right wing of the building... my torch turned off, the temperature reached a freezing chill and my phone was stuffing around... I left the room and everything went back to normal... on the way home I had some inexplicable case of nausea, and was fading in and out of conciousness...
3 years pass... im out exploring the tram network and decide to venture back here... the place was completely fenced off with no way of entry... so I decided to walk around the building from the outside... I came around to the right wing of the building again but I was standing on the road this time... and wanted to take some photos with my new phone... things were going Ok until I decided to step closer to the fence right outside the room I told you about earlier... and then my new phone started glitching (never happened to this phone before, and never happened again)...
I would like to know what the hell happened in that room... not to mention the eerie sounds of a music box or something to that effect? That creeper me right out
yes wall to wall ghosts LOL
Have you done any research into the stories? Or just here to be edgy?
My mate and I were there a couple of weeks ago.. we got pinned by security.. apparently around a month ago someone got murdered in there so the security is even tighter now
Thomas Marshman seriously? Someone was murdered there? I don’t remember hearing anything on the news...what did security do? Just tell you to piss off??
Liz Hill yeah I didn’t see anything on the news either.. but it makes sense because about a month or so before we got busted by security i went there, there were multiple entry points under the fence and no razor wire and no security.. a month later we get busted and there’s no way in or over the fence, nobody would go in there alone unless they’re crazy so obviously some poor bloke trusted someone enough to go in there with them just to be murdered, makes you feel sick thinking about it when you’re right next to the place
Liz Hill and the security guard was pretty good and just took down my details and made sure we didn’t have tools to break in or anything to vandalise the place.. I asked a few questions and he told me he had been in there heaps of times and told me a few stories about being in there and things he has found.. had a good chat and a laugh with him and he was really cool, I’ve ran into heaps of security and this guy was by far the nicest bloke I’ve been busted by.. he was happy to chat and answer my questions
A woman was raped and murdered and left on the grass in front of Polaris just next door. I believe she was early morning jogging or walking to work. 😔
Hey rad video! I went there several years ago , back in around 2011 - we took a heap of photos & there was still a lot of stuff in their , including kitchen utensils , cups left on the tables - so if you want to see the photos find me on facebook - fb.com/lozchaidesign send me a msg & ill send them to you!! :) Loz
