- Lance Corporal Joshua Leakey, bottom left, is the first living British soldier to be awarded the VC, the highest military decoration for valour, in ten years and only the second since 1969. Three times he sprinted across an open field in a hail of Taliban bullets in Afghanistan to save an injured U.S. marine and grab a machine gun to fire on the enemy, turning a crucial battle in 2013. In an extraordinary moment at the ceremony where he received his VC yesterday, General Sir Nick Carter, the head of the Army, congratulated him with a handshake only to pull him in for an emotional hug. The 27-year-old also became the second person in his family to be awarded the medal – his second cousin Sergeant Nigel Gray Leakey, bottom right, was given the honour 70 years ago during the Second World War.

you can tell how uneasy he was after receiving the Commonwealths highest military decoration. Clearly a selfless, amazing person and soldier. Cheers from Canada
American here. Thank you Corporal Leakey for saving life the of our native son. I bet he'd never been so grateful to see an Englishman...
Definition of 'humble'. I watched a few interviews with this lad and he's always the same saying it's great for the regiment but that he feels awkward being singled out. What a great example for everyone
It's fantastic to see the head of the army grab him for a hug , even he knows how special a moment it is .
Well ony 11 have been awarded since the Queen came to the throne.
No, that's too much. It's a the most formal award you can get after a knighthood ( most of then don't deserve them). You don't see the monarch hugging folk.
@@uncleshagnasty so what if the monarch doesn't hug anyone. This is the guys boss and a very proud one at that
@@uncleshagnasty On September 11, 2024, Ayesha Leti-I'iga, a winger for the Black Ferns, asked King Charles for a hug during a reception at Buckingham Palace. He happily agreed, saying "Why not?". The players then surrounded him for a group hug, and the king later joked that it felt like being "flattened by a scrum". The video of the encounter went viral on TikTok and was widely praised by fans.
What a marvellous individual, 1 para must be super proud , men amongst men
Brave brave boys !!! Thank you for your service !!! 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Modest. Read the citation. This guy has played down one of the most illustrious VC’s bestowed. He deserves the Congressional Medal of Honour too after saving that young American officers life. In the tradition best keeping with our Paras, Utrinque Paratus, .... ready for anything, this guys quick wits, speed, strength and skill literally WON the day, steeled his companions and took the fight to the enemy in an almost impossible encounter. He took the initiative way beyond his rank and showed true bravery in the presence and face of the enemy. May the world bless you Joshua. .... FOR VALOUR.
@@Bot23 you are wrong. It is called the Congressional Medal of Honor. Please fact check before commenting. Thank you.
You are the best of them all well done wear your medal with honor and pride and for those who never came home
Huge Respect for military personal
Your the reason I’m proud to be British
Love to see the Seinior Officer saluting first then removing his hat in respect for Corporal Leakeys gallantry
By tradition all senior officers are now supposed to salute him and all VC recipients
@@madabbafan yes and quite right that they do so
@@theart8039 it was like King George V saluting the unknown soldier . No monarch should normally salute a soldier but he saluted the coffin of the unknown soldier.
@@IansOddInterests Yes I understand..I love that they salute a VC holder whatever the rank
@@madabbafan- not true at all. It's a made up 'tradition' with no basis in fact.
Sir, I salute you.
For those who noticed at 2:42 the General (leaves on collar patch) Salutes him first! for the rest of his career (though not mandatory) all British Armed Forces (ALL branches) high ranking officers will Salute first to Lcpl Leakey and all VC recipients as a sign of utter respect! As is tradition all Enlisted and lower rank officers salute all higher ranking officers first... from the day Leakey received the VC he will be saluted first!
including all from australia, canada, etc
That just is not true at all. It applies in the US for MoH winners buy not in the UK. Total fiction.
@@JammyDodger45 its not in the regs but it is tradition.
He wears that medal not for him, but for who didn't make it
A legend
The whole of Britain and those of Northern Ireland salutes you.Respect and admiration from Glasgow.🏴🏴🏴🇬🇧
