Hello from Las Vegas. Was planning on visiting the Balkans top of the year, but because Serbia keeps popping up every time I search “nomadic life” I’ll take this as a sign I that I must consider Serbia too. And Nis looks awesome. thanks for the video. Very helpful. So too are many of the comments.

hello sister, just to say if you didn't know something about monuments:
    1. If a statue of a person on a horse has both front legs in the air, it means that the person died in battle. 2. If the horse has one leg raised, the person died from wounds received in battle. 3. If the horse has all four legs on the ground, the person died of natural causes.
sve najlepse sestro i puno uzivanja ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

One of the first reactions of foreigners to a longer stay in Serbia is a few extra kilos added:)... Of course, most of them later take a diet and sports activities to somehow correct it. That's one more reason to avoid driving as much as possible. Delicious food is not the only "problem", but also abundant portions, especially if you eat in restaurants. I spent some time in Italy and I was always hungry there. They eat like birds :)... People in the West have been robbed of the true taste of food by multinational companies, unfortunately. It happened so gradually that it went unnoticed like a lot of other changes recently. The food in Serbia smells and tastes like a real thing - it is not a perfect looking peace of plastic... Of course, there are changes here as well (read it : Montesanto), but it's still not to bad... The price of electric will go up very soon. They call it - the green agenda... One more thing, I would like to add - Niš and all other Serbian cities are very safe for the people in every time (day or night) and for the children. It is not perfect but it is safe enough. I am sure You noticed it... Also, people here are very social and like to hang out with friends. You can easily find a company :). The perfect marriage - western salary and Serbian life :). Best regards from Republic of Srpska !

Around hundred dollars per year gives you decent health insurance coverage with privately owned companies.
Of course it won't cover major surgery, organs transplants and such.
Government owned healthcare system is funded by deduction of fixed percentage out of your monthly income and it costs a bit less. Government healthcare system is a bit slow but it gives full cover for anything that needs to be done.

Bravo! Expats usually make grave mistake and live in Belgrade, and nevetheless, in center in Old Town, that is most expensive spot in Serbia... There is the rule in Serbia: the smaller town, smaller expences, so, if your main goal is lowest expences possible, aim for secluded mountain village :) There you simply don't have a places to spend money at all :))))))

I am guy from small village in central Serbia.
Your numbers are MOSTLY correct, but u are person who likes to spend a money.
You can live relatively good in Serbia with smaller amount of money per ONE PERSON.
THE MOST serbian families lives with 1000 us dollars per month or less, for 4 members.
Health care is free for people with serbian papers. Health care system in Serbia is not perfct but isnt trush.
That icecream, 2USD, it is hiper expensive for icecream.
Icecream prices goes from 0,5 us dollars up to the 2usd.
My favoritied is something like 0,7 us dollars. Milk+chocolate+strawberries. Around 100 grams in paper package.
    About rent a living space.
160 usd is resonable price in Nish, city where are you stacioned.
For Belgrade, 160 us dollars for city center is unposible mission.
You can rent only single room + right to use bathroom for that money.
IN AVERAGE, YOU CAN LIVE MODEST+ LIFE in SERBIA as a SINGLE non SERBIAN PERSON for 400 - 450 us dollars per month.

Many did that and liek made their own houses by just doing that.My friend who sadly no longer is in Serbia he built his own house by each year since his 20s he for like 4-5 months went to eigehr Germany or USA (he had his far family members so it helped alot) then he would or his family wold find him 2-3 jobs that are seassonal but also negotiable so he manages to get 2-3 jobs and wok them. He then hords all that money with only spending on little food even taking discounts and so on.Then he finishes and comes back to Serbia. He basicaly within 4-5 years accumulated enough that he built his own house from scratch.
Sadly he chose to leave Serbai cbs he found girl in Germany ad he satrted buissnes there so he ende sellin the house to the state to be demolished for new road that was going to be built there and sold it for like 3x the price.

Average person will not spend only 100$ a month on food, food in Serbia is 2X higher than in Russia and little bit more expensive than Italy. Some things in Italy cost 3-4X less, like olive oil, balsamico, canned beans, canned tomatoes and paste and the fuel is cheaper than in Serbia... 100$ a month means 330 dinars a day. That will barely buy you a breakfast and its a minimum to calculate per meal, so per day, you need around 1000 dinars, thats 300$ a month, so i dont understand how you calculated 250$ for nice food. You can technically squeeze it and eat for 700 a day, but that means eating popara and similar unhealthy pigs meals. I have grandma in Niš, ive been my whole life (30 years) and i like exploring, some places are bit cheaper than Belgrade, but majority is exactly the same.
Taxi is MUCH cheaper in Niš and there are no hills, so you can buy a cheap bicycle and use it for everything, you wont be sweaty after the hill climb. People are friendlier in Niš, city has more greenery and its cleaner than Belgrade, especially the air. Belgrade was the most polluted city in the world, not that long ago.

Thats one of the things I struggle with here, watching people survive... Not live. Because the salaries do not allow living, just survival. I will touch on that in the future. For now, I am trying to focus more on the positives.
For us from South Africa, Serbia looks like paradise - since we have similar socioeconomic struggles anywhere outside the cities (even there, it is awful for many). The salaries don't match the cost of living. But honestly, here you can go outside without fearing for your life. You can go for a quick walk to the shop without looking behind your back the whole time. Kids play outside. I would stay here, even if I had to go back to working 3 jobs again.

Serbian language is pain cuz of cyrllic alphabet but lvl of English is pretty good so you dont even need to learn Serbian expecially if you live in bigger city

    • @ACKE1389

You're right, but it would be really nice of foreign people to learn just a little bit of Serbian, just to respect the country they live in.

    • @majdavojnikovic

actually Cyrillic is the easiest part, as it is phonetic, so a person can learn to read Serbian before learning a word of it.
grammar is the real pain for many foreigners.

@Barry Rosenthal Bosnians understand Cyrillic since they are learning it in school. But they prefer Latin.

I love slavic languages. I wish all of them were standardized in the Latin alphabet.

@Barry Rosenthal but it is possible to write all of those languages perfectly in Cyrillic.
      So why not?

"Gouda" cheese is pronounced the same way you pronounce "out" or "house" it is not "gooda" cheese!!
It's Dutch so its K-k-k-ouda cheese.

Every public Serbian hospital I've Been looks more like a giant dirty torture chamber. I don't know why no one who works there cares about Taking down the 30 years of spider webs. When in Serbia, it's euro clinic for me lol..
