    Well done this is a great effort. I have just put a turbo on my 1.8 Civic, so I know some of the issues with putting a turbo on a car which was not designed for one. Keep up the good work!

      Yes I like the v6 engine, was looking to get a v6 freelander but wanted a manual. Loved the v6 in the MGZS 180.

    So the manifold’s just gone on my 1.8 (today 😤), and I need to replace it. I think it would be cheaper (longer term) to just upgrade the whole exhaust system to what you have here, in preparation for installing a similar turbo system. Could you tell me what manifold you used please? Where do the ST parts come into play?
    Cheers in advanced, Arthur.

      The exhaust manifold if from a 1.8 turbo engine like in the rover 75 / mg6

    Nice job! I have a v6 and just like you I want a turbo with manual gears, not least because the jatco auto box is unreliable. So what I want to know is wether the viscous coupling on the 1.8 the same as on the v6?

    • @comeinhandynow
      @comeinhandynow  3 роки тому

      I have read that they are different. Not sure it makes that much difference as long as it fits though.

    what are the major issues of this vehicle apart from the blown gasket? how often is it happening?its price as a used car is ridiculously low

    • @comeinhandynow
      @comeinhandynow  Рік тому +1

      If the head gasket leaks then it just needs fixing properly with the right attention to detail, as in my other videos. When that is done they are as reliable as any other old vehicle. Other typical things to wear out, similar to other old cars, are electric window cables, door lock motor and maybe the prop viscous coupler can stiffen up, so just keep an eye on that (check for severe reluctance to move when at extreme of steering). I think they are great value cars, I run a 1.8 (turbo converted) as a daily and have a v6 as a new project.

    I’ve just fitted a 1.8t to my zr, chap I bought the engine off had fitted an mls gasket which is weeping coolant down the front of block, would I get away with trying to tighten the head down a bit more or should I pull it all off and start again?

    • @comeinhandynow
      @comeinhandynow  2 роки тому

      That can happen when the jobis done a bit sloppily, not sealing over small surface imperfections. No harm in trying to tighten the head a bit more first, try another 1/4 turn each bolt and check the bolts have a consistent torque in case one has overstretched and has a weaker max torque.

    this is interesting, i'll bookmark this for future reference, might be a fun project. one question though, how long did the build last? cause the piston sleeves are paper thin and this engine doesn't feel all that solid compared to a, say 7afe. When i redid the engine i considered what you did but felt like the block would only get a few months under the pressure of a turbo.

    • @comeinhandynow
      @comeinhandynow  3 роки тому

      @@markstacey8092 That timer unit is an off the shelf unit, so cheap it isn’t worth doing your own and it does the job. Buying links in video description. You could use the ecu power down time but it is not as long as you can get with the timer.

      Hi again Mark, I just realised you are the guy who supplied my remapped frelander ECU. Can I ask a question in return about the ECU map you did: Was it mapped for a constant fuel pressure of 3.5 bar or one that goes up with boost via a regulator connected to the manifold?

      @@comeinhandynow The setup runs the standard returnless fuel system. By the way ive refined the cold fuelling a little to clean up the response (focus was fully warm tuning initially) so can update if you want to send the unit.

    so I am wondering and I believe you might be the person to ask. Can an automatic gearbox from let's say an rover 75 1.8 be fitted on a k series freelander?

    • @comeinhandynow
      @comeinhandynow  3 роки тому

      Not sure, but I wouldn't be surprised if there were a lot of compatibility issues: 2 wheel drive only, maybe electronic control of gearbox, interface to IRD etc. Probably too much trouble. If you want an auto freelander I would get a V6 model.

    • @PJ-om2wq
      @PJ-om2wq Рік тому

      Did you ever come to a conclusion on this? The 1.8 is the only Freelander that's ULEZ compliant. I'm thinking that the way to do it would be to fit the transmission and rear diff from a KV6 with a 75 engine ECU.

      My 1.8 turbo is running nice and reliably because it was well assembled and checked and with an N-series gasket. Turbo or not doesn't make that much difference to HG. You just need to check and build the engine well. See my other video on hints and tips ua-cam.com/video/8BEYJX-GOIc/v-deo.html

    If you don't mind me asking what was the ballpark cost of this conversion?

    • @comeinhandynow
      @comeinhandynow  2 роки тому

      I didn’t cost it out on mine, but typically it might be: mapped ecu £200, turbo/manifold £100, MG6/1.8T injectors and inlet manifold £60, shorter 1.8T conrods and 160 type pistons £100, oil filter housing with oil feed output for turbo £50, oil return and tap to block £70, intercooler and hoses £100, optional uprated fuel pump £80, sytec fuel regulator and return line £100, N type head gasket plus misc bits and lots of time. Surprising how it all adds up and these are all 2nd hand ebay estimates mostly, apart from the ecu where you send away yours to be mapped.
