If it's 8 different characters, I'd say the likely ones are:
Goku
Vegeta
Gohan
Piccolo
Trunks
Frieza
Krillin
Maybe 18 or Bardock or something? The initial 7 actually have a fair few fights throughout the story and how they're going to distribute Tournament of Power is a very very good question.

I haven’t heard anyone talk about character proficiency …each character has it on the screen when choosing them so it could be a way to farther increase the overall stats of the character maybe?!
