    Why compare Turner and Constable by asking which one is greater? This sort of critique/analysis is unnecessary. Art is about much more than, "who is greater?". Their work is a reflection of their own creative expression. It has nothing to do with petty competition. Food for thought.

    There is greater emotion in Turner’s art portraying the Industrial Revolution. That period was so dark & loathsome. Turner’s art captures the beautiful natural world before it but also the oncoming bleakness of Industrialism in its steamers & machines. He did very good work at contrasting those two different worlds using color emotion, he showed such happiness & bliss mixed with a kind of uncertain, dark power emerging.
    But Constable is my favorite 💗💗💗 I love the quiet passion at the center of them, you know he put extra soul in his works as they were very personal spots he frequented & probably come to fear losing the bliss & serenity he’d grown to love in them against a world growing louder & darker. He quite literally painted his heart’s longings. Maybe Constable had a deeper appreciation for that romantic, natural world where nature was superior to man & caused great spirituality to the individual, so I love the way he kept that world without machinery and division forever in color. 🎨 🖼️ 💐
    Turner’s character & beliefs come out in his work on the other hand as somebody who might have believed in that new world of industrial power & was accepting of the change whether for better or worse, so I admire Constable for remaining stubborn in his natural world closer to a Higher power of nature & beauty & not really capturing the darkness that was emerging at the time. I would have very much liked to stay in the solitude of a world without factories & corruption polluting the air & soul too. & that’s what I feel of Constable’s character just seeing his paintings. I am a romantic after all so this is biased of course, but both artists were amazing.

    Constable painted the everyday; Turner painted events. Even his pure landscapes or seascapes seem to be natural events. Together, they chronicled the quotidian and the extraordinary. In Constable the present recedes into nostalgia; in Turner, it rushes off into uncertainty like a runaway train. Constable painted the idyll of English life facing within while Turner painted the whirlwind of England facing the world.

    Was there really a "rivalry" back in the day? I think people at the time just liked to see both. It's like when people pretend there is a rivalry between the Japanese Katana and the European Longsword, and then say the Katana is better because it's more popular. It's nonsense, in Holland we say: You're comparing apples with pears, there is no winner.

    For me personally Turner is better by miles. Greater understanding of light, perspective.. braver in his approach.. always in search of something greater. When Constable tried expressionism he failed. When turner tried realism he succeeded. But practice makes perfect and Constable really perfected his own style.

  • @kingsleysaxon9710
    @kingsleysaxon9710 3 роки тому +4

    One transcended and uplifted man's perspective, one tried to depict man's reality. Turner depicted his sensations as a natural visceral reaction, Constable depicted his parochial outlook. One arose in a working man's world as a barbers son, the other a landed gentry product. I think Constable would have voted for Brexit, Turner would have preferred to make the world his own and voted for inclusiveness. Almost certainly those that prefer Constable have strong conservative leanings. Turner is greater as he opens the window to a transcendent vision.

    They really were so different, almost opposites in their approach to art. Turner was the great versatile innovator producing works way before his time designed to break down solid forms in light that well anticipated, and arguably even dramatically bettered Impressionism; on the other hand Constable was a very wonderful naturalistic landscape perfectionist - it is invidious to see them as in competition, both were geniuses in their own artistic fields

    Both suffered from overworking the final canvases; both made glorious sketches and studies rivaling Monet. Turner's compositions seem odd, especially in his late famed "first abstract expressionist" explosions, but the color mixing is revolutionary. Constable over-composed, but subjects were less melodramatic pastoral scenes considered inferior to the grandiloquence of the period's High Art. They created a context in contrast to each other, and for viewers to consider what they wanted artworks to provide. I could live with small studies by either, but maybe large paintings by neither.

    • @provenelk
      @provenelk 8 років тому +3

      +z1522 You're telling me stuff like 'Hannibal and His Army Crossing the Alps' or 'The Decline of the Carthaginian Empire' were Turner's inferior works? I'd argue Turner was at his best when he was painting big, he was a pioneer of blending drama and nature together to create, as you put it, "melodramatic grandiloquence", which elevated landscape painting to a position of High Art. Constable as well was a fine small painter, but his most famous works are large canvas, e.g 'The Hay Wain' and 'The Opening of Waterloo Bridge'. You might say "over-composed", but Constable was about conjuring pastoral nostalgia, his whole deal was capturing an idyllic moment, so the composition is going to be precise. And one of Constable's main signatures was his fine detail, so by that case I'm not sure you could argue he "overworked" the final canvas either.

Whitney is like Turner: the drama queen sticking to one technique or style (she never wrote a song) and everything is emotion and lots of it. Mariah is like Constable: the virtuous artist studying every minute detail of techniques and processes (Constable studied Michelangelo's and Da Vinci's books on painting techniques until he mastered them). Pity one cannot paint a duet but only sing one!!

    Turner is simply a more exciting, vigorous, and varied painter than Constable, both in subject matter and in life-long stylistic variety and career trajectory. Which is certainly not to say that Constable is any less beautiful, or acute in observation. They both have unique visions. But I think Turner's rapid progression as an artist best reflects their age and its accelleration. I would probably be more comfortable and gratified spending an afternoon in Constable's company, but I would be more challenged and considerably less comfortable trying to keep up with Turner. And therein lies the difference.

    Who was the 'better' artist ? Applying the values of competitive sport to the appreciation of great art is an entirely unworthy and trivial idea - on a par with the Sun newspaper contriving a 'contest' between quite uninteresting pop groups Blur and Oasis. In fact - Turner and Constable had enormous love and respect for each others' work, as did Picasso and Matisse. The concept of competition is nothing to do with the work of artists, who tend to gain inspiration from each others work.

    Give us a break, please. During his lifetime, official Britain treated Turner like a dog, because he had no classy background. Yet that man so loved his country, with love never requited. Only when he was recognised by the French artists after his death, and when the Americans started buying his works which often were a butt of jokes at exhibitions, then the British realised they might have something PROFITABLE at hand. Similar with Constable; educated, supertalented but poor, it was when his works were exhibited in Paris Salon & stirred the continental public that he became "Mister Constable". That is all Brits understand - money and rent. When money pours in their pockets through the high rent of under-appreciated real-estate, then they speak "litanies of art". The Brits are as blind as hedgehogs as to what art really is, so they use other senses, like noses, to smell the way where the money hides, or ears, to listen where money rings cashings.

      Okay I'm vaguely offended by this sorta unneeded hatred towards Britains.

    Constable is so much greater, Turner's paintings are dull in my opinion
