In this video, I discuss a ninja lesson from the Bansenshukai. In this historical ninjutsu text it says: “Ancient people say life and death depends on your own destiny and hardships are opportunity driven. Those that resent the heavens will not know their destiny and those that resent poverty do not know their position.” - Fujibayashi Yasutake | Bansenshukai (1676) VOL 2 . Although I do not share any of the footage of my students and I discussing this quote, I would love to read your thoughts on the subject.
Good evening, First of all i want to thank you that you share your wisdom with us. A really big treasure and if you take the time you can draw (gain) a lot of it. And I think it is only fair to send you a big thank you on this way. With the age of 14 i started to learn and practise Taekwon Do. Withe the age of 19 i started to learn Qi Xing tanglang chuan. And now with the age of nearly 58 i am still a beginner. My skills has improvrd and honed over the years but my body is deterioating. Damaged discs and backbone makes me a great candidate for a wheel chair but not yet. I still do my daily 100 kicks and 300 punches. Since 8 years i study the bung bo / pung bo / beng bu form. And still i find littlevsecrets hidden in it. You study a form from a dead man. But if you take the time and endless repitions you find secret movements hidden in it. i think i have now a collection of 30 interpretations of the same form. And all of them are different and unique. And the principles still work nowaddays.. you have to find what works for you in it. The same goes with sun tzu the art of war. The weapons have changed of the years but not the principles.one huge problem are the translations. So translations are done by people who have mastered the language but they are not martial artist. So treasures and secrets get lost in translation. Sometimes they have to be rediscovered again.keep the art a live and the mind empty. Prejudices and assumtions are the tombstone on your grave. I wish you all the best for your school and your teaching. And i hope you don't feel offended that i have shared my thoughts with you. With all my respect and a safe journey on your way....
There's a lot said in a few short sentences. So, "hardships are opportunity driven," So the harder we try to take advantage of an opportunity, or force an opportunity to occur, the more likely it sill turn into hardships? But it's right when it states, "without poverty......" Because when I lost my job a few yrs ago, I realized how little money I needed and how happy I was with so much less....opportunity - holy! Mind blown.
"Life and death depend on your own destiny..." I am an astrologer. Very true. I was mugged at knife point on a Halloween a decade or more ago. In the house of Death was stacked Saturn, Mars, Ketu, Pluto... I was meant to die that night... "Those that resent the Heavens will not know their destiny..." It was because of my spiritual connections with the heavens that I am studying with you now, Soke. This resonates in some ways. But an important point is missed (or not expressed yet in the scroll). However we worship, honor, asknowledge Truth or a Higher Consciousness, that protects us. Destiny may be there. But connection to Spirit can erase even the worst of destinies.

Worrying about life and death profits a man nothing, life's difficulties are blessings in disguise. Resentment serves only to hold yourself back and disables you from humility.
Soke… Thank you for sharing
Thank Soke for sharing this lesson with us and helping us understand the Way, and also seeing how the old ways can be done in the modern day.
Poverty has taught me many things. Humility, self reliance, and creativity.
