Back in the mid 70s I became a huge Joan Armatrading trading enthusiast. Still am. Please understand that I grew up as a southern white boy in Tennessee but I knew immediately that she was beautiful and her music was beautiful. I saw her in concert around ‘75 in a little music hall down on Overton Square in Memphis. The only thing I struggled with that night was trying to wrap my head around the sound of a beautiful black woman speaking with a South African accent. That was a huge eye opening experience for me. That was the first time I began to know in my soul how very alike we all are. Never mind skin color or what part of the world you’re from. I first heard your music playing in the background when Nightbirde got the golden buzzer on agt a few weeks ago but the only lyrics I could make out were “revival” and “Will I ever breathe again?” so I finally just looked for that. So glad I did. My eyes are still open and you have rebooted my entire system. Joy, you also are beautiful and your music is beautiful and just as Joan was my first big eye opener outside my own tiny southern white world, I believe you and your marvelous music are opening hearts and minds. It may be a long time before you see the flowers but you are planting the seeds for sure. We need you so please just keep putting it out there. Sorry about the book but I just had to tell you. I see America
She breaks my heart everytime I hear her sing. My generation did not have hope. We had the fear of our parents' anxiety as the soundtrack for our lives. I hear Joy and I know that our children and grandchildren, like us, are still struggling to create beauty in a difficult world. Joy seems to reveal her gifts and her hopes and love for herself and humanity. That is the soundtrack of survival. Respect to you and yours and the world we are trying to become. And, Joy, you are lovely!
Great comment....cept Joan was born on the island of St.Kitts and later moved to London. First I saw her live, in Santa Cruz CA 1978, I had great fortune of bumping into her the following morning while she was out jogging. I grew up in entertainment industry, but almost was star struck because Joan A. is so very talented. But I said hello and she chatted with me like we're long time friends. Her music has been core in the soundtrack of my life. And this woman? WOW! I hope this benefit is hugely successful. She is awesome. New fan here..
It is not surprising that one of her inspirations was Tracey Chapman, one of my all-time faves and an absolutely amazing talent. Please, keep making beautiful music--so many on the scene today have little to no talent, while you have it all over them!
The first time I heard you sing, I said you reminded me of Tracy Chapman! Cool to find out she was your inspiration. My daughter knew you in school and introduced me to your happy music. Look Up is such a simple yet such a powerful song. Literally brought me to tears the first time I heard it.
Why hasn't this young lady blown up as big as Olivia Rodrigo and the others? mmmmm. She has a presence and a message that is unmistakable. She's god damn talented.
You are so incredible!! Just heard you for the first time a few hours ago and immediately went to look for more of you on youtube and now all of the sudden it's 230am. Next time you're in the DC area I'll be there for sure.
you're really great, one artist to another! thumbs up #311 from your newest subscriber (thanks Colbert!) ps: just noticed you posted this on my b-day, 14 April...
Your name is so fitting. Joy is what you are. You’re music soothes my soul. Appreciate you Queen. 🙏🏼❤️
