Jordan Mailata vs Falcons

  • You know it's football season when the Mailata breakdowns are back!
    First game after signing af 4 year extension, and he continued where he left off in 2020 - by showing better and better technique, strong punches, and supreme athleticism. Oh and the man found of it's easier to pull defenders to the ground when they get too low in bullrushes.

    Jeff Stoutland trained Jordan, a guy who 3 years ago never put on football pads, to being a starting left tackle in the NFL who replaced a future HOF player in Peters. One hell of a feat for both of them.

      To think our 7th rd pick outplayed and beat our 1st rd pick from the same draft at the same position. The birds need to draft better. Gotta get value for Dillard now while we can. Trade him for anything. A janitor if that's all that's offered.

    He looks like he has been doing this his whole life. From the niners game last season where he looked good but rough to this is almost like watching a different player. His mistakes are so subtle and few are made at all. He looks settled and just blends in with the vets in the line. Amazing to watch.

    What is continually NOT mentioned about Mount Jordan, is that he's really smart. People have no idea how complex the Eagles blocking schemes are because of the continual mix of run, RPO, and passing. On any given play, an offensive lineman might have 2-3 blocking assignments. Extremely complex offensive playbook and he seems to have mastered it. The guy is not only huge...he's agile and smart and thank God so far...immune from serious injury.

He played as a backup until Peters was FINALLY shelved (and since Peters couldn't play a full game yes, Mailata got on the field in all those games - with no prep of course). He should have been the starter from day one but Doug always preferred the washed up veteran like Peters or Alshon over a promising young player. A big part of why he's not here anymore.

    Mailata has really nailed that pulling maneuver on guys who are trying to power into his chest. It's so cool to see him develop that. Last year, he would sometime lose on a good (but over-committed) bullrush. And defenders clearly see that in his tape, so they're going hard at full extension. Sadly, for them, he's figured out the counter to it during the offseason. So he pulls them down and sits on them. Hah!

Seems to have clearly improved from last season. He appears a lot more confident about his game in press conferences now too. To truly learn and excel at anything… a person requires that combination of confidence and humbleness…to know he will succeed while being vulnerable enough to “fail” along the journey and keep getting up and becoming better… I may be caught in the moment of hyperbole, but I truly believe this “perfect storm” of coach and player will lead Jordan to legendary heights…I am definitely not a jersey wearing guy-am 50 but even when I was 20-I didn’t wear jerseys. This crossed my mind a few years ago before he was the starter, with his rugby background it would’ve been cool to see. As the full time LT, I’d rather see him stay there instead of potentially getting hurt on a toss play.

    Where the play where he made the one arm no look block and then took on a second guy?

    • @ThomasRinggaard
      @ThomasRinggaard  2 роки тому +1

      That was on the Smith TD. On the box view from all 22 it looks like he made minimal contact and the DL falling was more a result of a poorly timed spin move, that's why I didn't include it :)

    I notice a few things:
    1) His extreme first step from the last two years has been reduced. While it was impressive for a man his size, it was mostly unnecessary with his feet. IMO, he protects against the inside better because of it.
    2)While his punch is very good, it's only average when you consider his size and length. And it's mostly used defensively...I'd like to see it used as a weapon more in the run game.
    But overall, extremely impressive for a player already playing at a high level, with a lot of growth potential remaining due to lack of experience, and a clear willingness to hone his craft (which I hope remains after the contract settles).
