🌟 DIY BJD Eyes / How to Make Your OWN Resin Doll Eyes!

I recently purchased a BJD doll and entered the world of BJD DIYs. I was seriously in love with the custom eyes I saw some people making, so I decided to try my hand at it. And now I've made a video of the process. I hope its helpful to some of you. I hope to make other videos on BJDs in the future. In the meantime, let me know what you think of this tutorial. I kind of want to see a few dolls with all those different eyes
If you mix slower and pour the resin mixture into another cup from lets say 3ft above, you will not get bubbles.

What type of rhinestones do you use for your pupils please? I've used flatback acrylic ones and they loose their light reflectivity when I pour resin over them and look completely flat. :(
Yes, that is usually the case unfortunately. I have found that only AB rhinestones show up in resin, because each facet reflects the light in a different colour. Try those and it might work for you too :)
Sonja.R try using point back gems. Flat backs basically turn into a mirror when you put resin on them. I use point backs in my eyes. It's a pain to get them to sit right but boy is it worth it in the end!

Hmm... Well I don't know much about doll assembly. I'm a knitter and I have a project that I'm eager to complete that's a large, fluffy spider and I need some creative eyes for it. The button eyes for knitting are like screws that have a flat disc to pop on the back side to keep it attached to the fabric. There's not much creative diversity on the market for them. I have a lot of simple, dull black ones. Would it work if I squish in one of the black ones to the white resin while it's curing? Do you think that might work?
One of these days I might want to try making bjd dolls themed for Splatoon and some themed for a princess matching card set I have they are flower princesses and I love them

Well actually it depends on the doll like smart doll eyes can be really expensive. But i get your point

Wow beautiful! Really nice video! How do you buy the moulds from taobao, I'm having a hard time understanding how that website works for English speakers. Those moulds would be so perfect
Thanks! To buy from Taobao you need to do it through a third party. I do it with SpreeNow.com but there's other services out there that do the same thing. Basically, they allow you to search through their system, or through Taobao if you're comfortable with the website. You purchase through the third party service, they receive the items shipped from Taobao, then re-ship them to you. As you can imagine, this does take quite a long time. Another thing to try is search through Ebay and Etsy and see if anyone else is selling BJD molds. I know SproutyDoll sells some, but they are quite pricey.

When you say 'iris' I take it you mean 'pupil' as the whole coloured bit is the iris?
You are great. Where do you buy the molds for these eyes.? I have some resin on hand. Can I use acrylic white paint for the eye white color? I want to make reborn eyes. Would a black bead be okay for the pupil? I like blue eyes mostly. If i do the brown, i like them to be almost black or a very dark brown. Green are nice once in a while. What would you suggest for the iris color. Should i paint them and then paint the black iris, maybe put a rinestone for a glow next to the pupil? What is the easiest way to do the irs and pupil before the resin?

Have you tried sanding and buffing to fix overflow?
I know this is a couple year old video so you may not see this to answer this, but I’m having trouble and I can’t seem to find an answer anywhere else. How do you recommend getting rid of or masking any air bubbles that end up on the edges of your finished eyes? Is there a way to fill them?

These eyes were made a year ago - has the resin yellowed at all? That seems to be a common problem with resins.

can i also use water pencils when working with resin?
You could only if you seal the eye base prior to using the pencils - something like MSC would most likely work. I haven't tried this myself, so I'm only assuming this would work well. :)

Is it necessary to dome in two steps like here to get a nice depth? I use clear glue to secure pupils and shiny stuff and then dome in one go. And I have the feeling the results look kinda flat. Would a double dome fix that?
Another thing that irritates me is that too much shine powder slighty clouds the resin and to few doesnt give shine. Is there a way to fix that?
Oh btw I found the best way of placing point back gems for me is making a little hole in the eye center to fit the point into.
You can definitely do it in just one step - I personally do two steps because I often use glitter in my eyes and that tends to kind of float to the top and ruin that shiny, smooth dome surface. I don't think doing it in one step would necessarily ruin the dome shape - but doming in general is always tricky and sometimes overflows and ruins the eyes if you don't catch it quickly enough.
I think fixing the pearl powder problem would just have to come down to securing it in a layer closer to the bottom of cavity and filling with clear resin the rest of the way.

Have you experimented with different resins? I have worked with low and medium viscosity resins, but it would be interesting how high viscosity would work for domes.
