  • Baltimore’s water infrastructure is nearly a century old. While the city’s drinking water meets federal safety standards, some people that NBC News spoke with do not trust their tap water. Yamiche Alcindor talks to residents about their frustration and growing mistrust over the situation. EPA Administrator Michael Regan tells NBC News “unfortunately we have waited too long” to invest in water infrastructure. Last September, a boil water advisory was issued after E. coli was found in the water in three locations in West Baltimore. Baltimore City’s infrastructure czar tells NBC News that the city “desperately” needs federal support for improvements. The city’s tap water meets federal safety standards, but some residents don’t trust it - and their frustration and their bills keep growing.

No one should have to drink brown water in this day and age. Shame on those city officials that haven't made that a priority. Too bad Yamiche didn't pull out a glass of that brown water and ask Matthew Garbark to take a big swig. Really???!!! "It's safe to drink"?! I'd like to see his family/children drink it and see if he's ok with that. 🙄 How stupid do they think we are?

Iron is safe because you need iron intake daily for your blood. A lot of Women have issues not getting enough Iron because of poor diet. I'm not saying brown water is tasty but it is safe because its just iron.

Many of the water pipes in use are over 100 years old. Which says a lot about the original construction but at some point they will fail.

DPW director in Baltimore just resigned 1 day ago after two council members told him he needs to make sure the trash it picked up weekly or he needs to resign so he did! But blamed it on family issues etc…There was an E. coli contamination during Sept. and he notified residents via Twitter! The laziness of city officials is ridiculous! Mention this guy has one of the highest salaries in MD for his position.

As a baltimore resident. I can add on to this. I have a 3 stage water filter for my house. 1 sediment, 2 charcoal. Followed by a 7 stage RO system used for cooking and drinking.
My 3 stage filter which serves the house gets clogged with sediment in just a short 3 months. It takes our water pressure from 60psi to about 10psi.
(For reference, my 3 stage filter consists of 20"x2.5" filters)

I really hate how this story tries to paint a picture that's not there. This is nothing more than just needing to counter a problem of ignorance with a good public relations and education campaign. The water is perfectly safe to drink. Yes, sometimes when there is nearby construction, turning old valves removes iron scaling from the inside of turbuclated ductile iron and that releases brown iron particulate into the water. It's inert and not harmful. This might happen to a costumer once a year in any city. Just flush your tap for a minute and it goes away. If you notice the water is cloudy that's just air. Let the water sit for 30 seconds and let the air bubbles go away. Stop buying bottled water and save money!
