I have a few different ones and I’d take the Trangia one any day of the week. The quality of its build is better than cheapies so it will last you many years. And you can carry some fuel in it which is a huge bonus. Thanks for sharing. Take care and stay safe.
I bought a new Trangia 27 set. Used I once, sold the burner and replaced it with a new Esbit burner (already had two Esbit burners in other kits). The Esbit looks, feels and works the same as the Trangia, but for me the little folding handle on the simmer ring just makes it more user friendly. Only my opinion, of course.
The winner in this test bloomed reasonably quickly and lasted a long time. There's no guarantee that it would get water to a boil in cold windy conditions.
Hi Dan 👍🏻. That favourite one of yours acts like my homemade pop can one I made. And it’s been going strong for a couple of years now. Prefer fast heating as lots of times using to brew up in breaks from river fly fishing. So quicker bloom is best for me
Got to say the Trangia was the most consistent flame and a quick bloom. I’ve got one, plus a close Trangia copy which is great. I bought the Lixada aluminium one which leaked. The big stainless one was rubbish. Chucked that. Great video. Glad it’s not just me messing around with my stoves in lockdown.
FYI: If you have the larger military Trangia/Svea, the Tatonka stainless steel flame adujuster works with and fits this (even when the lid is attached). I know you said about not being in a rush etc but an efficiency test could be good as well? Each stove fileld with same amount of meths. How long before each 1 brings a cup to boil but then also how much fuel is left afterwards.
I have used many alcohol stoves and made a few over the years, I agree with you that if you are just making a brew pretty much any one will do, I do prefer the full trangia system, with the windshield pot stands and cooking pots just because it is pretty foolproof and consistent and can simmer
The biggest issue with alcohol stoves are they don't perform too well in the wind, and I think the fuel runs out a lot faster in the wind too. I love alcohol stoves, I could get a gas one but I just like the alcohol stoves. I might have to invest in a windshield. I have a trangia and a copy Esbit I think, both are decent, I think I prefer the Esbit a little more because the top to snuff out the flame has a handle.
I think as a beginner although I have an alpkit brukit which is a jet boil copy but literally boils a litre in a few minutes, these alcohol stoves to me represent everything that wild camping represents. Forced time to chill out and watch the flame and slow down and savour what youre doing whereas the brukit is job done, what next. Efficient but another thing I want to escape the fast and furious everyday life we all seem to be forced into leading. Ok, not as quick, efficient, blah, blah, blah. But a hellever lot more relaxing.
@@reeceyp1972 agreed. I like to go for a bike ride and a coffee in the woods. I don’t want it to be over in a flash. However I think in the mountains some wind protection might mean the difference between getting a brew or meal or not. So for that the full Trangia system with windshield is the best of both worlds. And you can get a gas burner for it too if you’re out with impatient people!
Cheers Dan. I’d still go with the Trangia. Not because it’s the most expensive but because it’s the most consistent. I agree not too fussed about how quick it boils my water it is ready to start the process quicker and I think you’ll find is more efficient in colder and more drafty conditions. Also, I trust the Trangia to have fuel in it all the time. Use it correctly and it doesn’t leak on the go!
Great video, Dan. As you said there should be no rush when you're out camping and a few mins either way isn't important. Also agree that brand name doesn't matter - you're stealth camping ! No one can see the brand. Cheers
Hi Dan. Great video. Up until recently I have used the cheap Chinese gas stoves. Then I made a cat tin burner for free which I loved using. Just this Christmas I got some vouchers for the Christmas and wanted to buy a small frying pan. I ended up getting the Trangia mini and I think it's brilliant and so easy to fit in my everyday 35lt bag. Great value for money. I'm usually the which is the cheapest type of person but when you're looking at just a couple of quid more then I think the best respected and most used must be worth considering. Cheers Dan and keep them coming
I use gas stoves currently using the windmaster 4flex but enjoyed this video. Loved the flame on that can type on the right, after a good days walking I’d fall asleep watching that the flame was awesome.
The tall Lixada stove surprised and impressed me. The holes are the smallest ones in this test but the overall diameter of the stove is the largest. The quick bloom and strong, continuous flames are just what is needed for pan frying and for boiling larger amounts of water.
Thanks for the effort. Try making the Fancy feast stove. I went to my local Asda years ago and bought Tomato purée tin and a tup of cat food. Used a piece of old plumbers cloth my mate was throwing out. I have had that stove for years. Cooked Bacon and Egg on it today for my Mrs after a 10 mile moors walk . 👍
I like the trangia ones I have three and the Pathfinder burner and stand is excellent also as it’s all in one and fits in a cup, I also have a full Tatonka stainless steel copy of the Trangia 25 stove, it works well and for those worried about aluminium fits those needs, pots and frying pan are bullet proof steel.
Hi dan,,I’ve had my trangia for donkeys,,brilliant little stove,,it’s consistent,,only takes a minute ish to bloom!! Every time I sort my kit out for the next camp I just get a toothpick and clean the jets,,it’s as new👌👌👌 I bought the lixada knock off a couple of months ago and theirs no equal comparison,,took longer to bloom and not a constant flame when it did,,,, 👎👎👎 and it was only £4 cheaper,,,and plus after when uve been seeking up your camp the last thing you want is to wait for your water or grub to heat up,,so I guess time does matter mate,,,
I'm more interested in if it will do the job when I need it to than what name is on the side of the box it came in. A boil test with them will show the 'best' stove in terms of efficiency. 👍
Right up my street this , i've bought a few and made a few , my favorite home made is based on the USA fancy feast stove obvoiusly i made from small food tins ( baked bean and Sweetcorn tin ) some fire stove rope Really good making your own , the fancy feast stove dosn't need a stand and seems really efficient Best regards Shaun

Great video matey, I'm loving the alcohol burners more and more now, the tall Lixada is brilliant, but very thirsty on fuel, and the Lixada copy that comes with the stand is excellent, brand doesn't matter to me , performance does, and for me it's Lixada all the way, atb Paul 🙏🏕️🏕️🏕️😁
Cracking test mate, I have a trangia, the main reason I got one was that it has a screw top lid and doesn't leak (I bought a tatonka stand to go with it)...I am really impressed by the taller Lixada one though and I do like the Tomshoo one as it has a handle which is practical for when you need to snuff it out...I did think that you was going to run a bath and dot them around your bathroom and test them that way haha...
I make my own burner with a shoe polish tin and loft insulation (or rope) with a tuna tin pot stand... so no I don't think the name matters as long as it works.
Not sure that this proved if one burner was the best just that you can buy one for a fiver if you have a small budget ,still love you vids and you’re attune to life outdoors keep it up mate
It's like a lot other things in life , people go on about the product names being the best . As you have shown it isn't. It's about trying out the equipment to find what works best for you. Personally I have a number of stoves . The majority being homemade alcohol stoves. I have two old gas stoves a bcb crusader cook set and hexamine type stove . I prefer to do proper cooking like you and Carlisle 195 does . Nice video and see you soon on the next one .
I really enjoy this type of video, the name shouldn't matter as long as they perform similar or will last with use. I'm looking to buy my first alcohol stove and was going to go with the Trangia, but now I may buy another one. Keep safe and well and here's to the summer when we can hopefully get out 👍
Morning Dan love your reviews . Very interesting review I had a luxida one and a Trangia originally I liked the luxida one then after a number of goes the rubber seal went on it, I now prefer the trangia as I think you pay for the quality a bit more . Love your channel looking forward to your review on the American ration pack 👍👍
Hi dan I have that exact same burner as the unbranded middle front one I think it took about 12 - 13 to bring 500ml of water to a full boil it was out side not much wind but I still had to use a wind break as light breeze did effect the flame and boil time but over all very happy with it for a cheap ebay stove it wasn't fast but did the job that's all that matters when you want a hot drink when out on a camp👍
The one you like is the copy of Tatonka. The best stoves are the ones which are part of the cooking set like Tatonka and Esbit. They are safe - will not splash out burning liquid as did one of the burner on the video. That is the reason why they are banned in California. As part of the set the temperature of the liquid will be maintained - one stove on your video overheated and started to give big flame - most likely because there was not much fuel left in it and it was boiling it rapidly. Also alcohol burner will be very economical when part of the cooking set as all dimensions of the set will be calculated to accommodate burners propensities as with Esbit set - the flame will not go further than the bottom of the pot. Main advantages of alcohol stoves are that there are no moving parts, works in all conditions, can be replaced with gas burner - like with many sets like Trangia and Robens. And unless people will stop drinking - there always will be a fuel for the stove. All the best.
Depends on the amount of fuel you use to achieve a boil, late bloomers will not boil as quick bit will take longer. It would be interesting to see boil times so you could judge value against fuel costs. But as you say no rush if you sitting taking in the scenery.
These stoves should only be filled to 2/3rd Max. They are taking their time to ‘bloom’ because they are over filled. So they are having to burn off the excess fuel before they can work properly. Not over filling them will also give better fuel efficiency.
Trangia for me. It blooms fast and a good flame which may be why it burned out first. I’m never in a hurry in the woods so boil time really doesn’t matter to me. I just like Trangia. I think they will all do the job it just depends on personal choice.
i always go with the trangia civilian version purely because it is the perfect size to fit into a military hexamine cooker frame without having to adapt it, i like that one on the right hand side though.
In my opinion it doesn’t matter what price point you pay for your alcohol stove but the old adage is more you pay the better the stove works I argue it myself as long has it works boils water and you can cook on it that’s all that matters Tom shoe stove is good lixada works very well the unnamed stove not doing bad dan great video very entertaining enjoyable to watch 👍👍👍
Gone over to an aluminium one. It's a direct copy of the trangia but aluminium instead of brass. Works exactly the same way and tests show it burns at the same rate too. Main advantage is it's superlight and cost about £4
Interesting video. I wish you would have said the times they all lasted especially the last one. I use the Lixada copies and they work great. I also use a pellet tin with firerope in for my BCB Crusader mk1 which interestingly boiled water much much quicker than the Trangia copies in the video I did.
Personally I don't see the point of buying branded gear just because it's branded if I can get something that does the same job but unbranded and cheaper then I'll get it
My trangia was only £10 and they are generally available for that price. I wouldn't like to think I had the burner that went mad towards the end, that could be very dangerous if cooking in a porch or near a tent etc. It seemed to spill meths and start burning the ply sheet.
That was a good test. Could it be the ones that lasted longest were maybe not quite as hot as the tall Lixada one? I guess the bigger the flame the sooner it'll run out of spirit. I only recently bought my first alcohol stove - Redcamp brand and I paid £12.99 but it does come with a stand that's exactly the right height. Probably over the next few years I'll try other brands and I'll look back at your test before I decide which one I go for next. Thanks for doing these sort of tests so we don't have to.
I’ve used loads of alcohol stoves unbranded a branded most unbranded ones don’t last I’ve had a branded one for 15 years a still working but the unbranded have never lasted
I like the trangia stove good solid reliable, only issue for me is it's a thirsty little bugger , swapped mine out for the speedster 50ml stove never looked back , check them out
They're all twin-walled pressurised alcohol stoves so you can only use alcohol. I tested some homemade ones once for a laugh with petrol and white spirit knowing it wouldn't end well...it didn't lol.
Would there be a chance you can do this but with how fast they boil the same amount of water in the same pot? So we can see the efficiency of the heat output.
I have the lixada trangia fake an I can’t fault it used it in the north Pennines in a wind chill of -20 and it worked just as well as it would in the summer can’t complain I think it will probably last forever
Whats important to me is it has a screw top and seals, the winner here would be no good to me, i have a Lixada with screw top and rubber O ring its great for me does not leak ,yes i have to wait another minute or 2 to bloom but so what 🤷♂️, came with simmer ring, pot stand and wind shield all in £9 delivered
Brands invest in research and development to bring us new product innovations. Sometimes its good to back the brand. Trangia looks consistent. The huge one seems to be burning a lot of fuel.
How did you the miss the massive fail on the TomShoo one at 11:35 where the fuel had leaked out and set fire to the table. That’s why large flames started leaping up. That could be a fatal accident in a tent vestibule.
I don't actually mean whisky, I just used it as an example, the thing that I am looking for to use as a fuel, is something that is cheaper and smells better.
Nowt wrong with that low end fleabay £5 jobby. Simmer cap ? Screw on lid ? Saying that, I'd buy the tall one on the back right, which may bloom even earlier with less meths in it to start with.

Great review on all the alcohol stoves mate...
The Tom shoe one went mental as the board was alight and therefore was preheating the meths and vaporising it. This causes the flare up.
Yes, I saw that too - it was sat on a spill and once the flash point was reached it ignited and flared up.
I thought it was leaking meths at the time.

Bang on there. Sure you get what you pay for and as long as it foes the job who cares. Bushyboy Oz.
Some unbranded items are fantastic just give them a field test before you go camping just to be sure.. ady
My trangia was only £10 and they are generally available for that price. I wouldn't like to think I had the burner that went mad towards the end, that could be very dangerous if cooking in a porch or near a tent etc. It seemed to spill meths and start burning the ply sheet.
Had a cheap chinese 1 for years and love it
Hi mate thankyou for watching
That was a good test. Could it be the ones that lasted longest were maybe not quite as hot as the tall Lixada one? I guess the bigger the flame the sooner it'll run out of spirit. I only recently bought my first alcohol stove - Redcamp brand and I paid £12.99 but it does come with a stand that's exactly the right height. Probably over the next few years I'll try other brands and I'll look back at your test before I decide which one I go for next. Thanks for doing these sort of tests so we don't have to.
Hi mate thats lixada one kicks a load of heat out
I wonder have you had a go at making one ? I have, sadly no joy yet. Stay safe have fun.
Have you ever tried a kelly kettle. Or a ghillie kettle for boiling water?
No mate
Picked up the Trangia stove from Go Outdoors for £9.80 the other day.
I’ve used loads of alcohol stoves unbranded a branded most unbranded ones don’t last I’ve had a branded one for 15 years a still working but the unbranded have never lasted
I like the trangia stove good solid reliable, only issue for me is it's a thirsty little bugger , swapped mine out for the speedster 50ml stove never looked back , check them out
i do like the bigger lixada, i shall look out for that 1 also
Thankyou for watching
@@englishwoodsman hi buddy, theres lots that look similar, can you possibly link the larger lixada so can look at the right one?
How much does just the burner of your favourite lixada on the right weigh?
Do you think the 2 on the left were over filled which caused it to take longer to bloom? I don't know the answer but would make sense
Mate if I did not put the same amount of fule in people would of said it was not mot clear test
No that's not what I am asking. I am asking do you think that is the reason
@@lewisgreenwood7274 yes it might of been over fill ,
Looks like the top right one is right on the job. Stupid question, can you use jell in these stoves? I've never used this type of stove before.
I don't know mate
They're all twin-walled pressurised alcohol stoves so you can only use alcohol. I tested some homemade ones once for a laugh with petrol and white spirit knowing it wouldn't end well...it didn't lol.
Would there be a chance you can do this but with how fast they boil the same amount of water in the same pot?
So we can see the efficiency of the heat output.
Hi there, may i ask a question please? Can i use Bio Ethenol in the house for cooking? or are the fumes poisionous. Thanks for any help
I would not recommend it but see you your can find it on there website
@@englishwoodsman ok, thanks very much. Just tryign to figure out alternative ways of heating my room. All the best
I have the lixada trangia fake an I can’t fault it used it in the north Pennines in a wind chill of -20 and it worked just as well as it would in the summer can’t complain I think it will probably last forever
I take that back I should have waited 2minutes before commenting😚
🤣🤣🤣
I'm more interested in the one that works best!
My lixada one is my best
It would have really helped if we could see which stoves you were ?pointing?at.
as long as they work thats all that matters
Whats important to me is it has a screw top and seals, the winner here would be no good to me, i have a Lixada with screw top and rubber O ring its great for me does not leak ,yes i have to wait another minute or 2 to bloom but so what 🤷♂️, came with simmer ring, pot stand and wind shield all in £9 delivered
Surely the best measure of effectiveness is how quick it boils water rather than how long it lasts?
Brands invest in research and development to bring us new product innovations. Sometimes its good to back the brand. Trangia looks consistent. The huge one seems to be burning a lot of fuel.
My wife confirmed that the longer the better.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I still like my fancy feast tho
It is like a lucky dip with a lot of this gear. Plus, if you look at U.S prices compared to ours we always pay more. What brand is the £5 one mate ?
Hi mate I don't know the brand name sorry
Compared with the state's we've been ripped off for years even considering US prices doesn't include sales tax.
like a horse race, should have put some bets on :)
🤣🤣
Thanks for doing that experiment quite interesting results. How about doing a vid on suppliers of meths the price varies widley
Any links to these burners ?
I bought the luios vitton hugo boss one for £270, boiled me water 2.5 seconds faster. Result.
The one you like is brilliant Dan all it's missing is a screw top cheers mate all the best marra take care mate stay safe 👍🏕️
My preference is cheaper the better
How did you the miss the massive fail on the TomShoo one at 11:35 where the fuel had leaked out and set fire to the table. That’s why large flames started leaping up. That could be a fatal accident in a tent vestibule.
Have you ever tried different types of alcohol fuel. Like meths against. gel, hand gel or even spirits like whisky.?
Whisky ?? No way mate
I don't actually mean whisky, I just used it as an example, the thing that I am looking for to use as a fuel, is something that is cheaper and smells better.
One video you could consider doing during lockdown Dan is, the giveaway. Just saying. 🙄🤔
does it matter really the best one is the one you have and gets used never go down the brand snobbery
There is a big problem with brand snobbery mate
Nowt wrong with that low end fleabay £5 jobby. Simmer cap ? Screw on lid ? Saying that, I'd buy the tall one on the back right, which may bloom even earlier with less meths in it to start with.
Were you been mate missed your vids loving adventure foods 👍
Been waiting for my new phone to come back mate
@@englishwoodsman that’s cool, your vids along with a couple others have literally got me through lockdown so thanks for that 👍 I live in the country side near Gloucestershire and used to do a bit of camping and since lockdown And your vids I been buying something new every week to build my kit up I can’t wait to get out but a bit nervous 😬 if I’m honest haha but yes your vids are so helpful 👍
