    Good video. The oil and gas industry do the same thing every 4 or 5 years where the plant is shutdown, isolated and gas-freed to allow all vessels, reactors and other major pieces of equipment to be inspected, cleaned or repaired. A typical shutdown, or “turnaround” can take 4 to 6 weeks, employing many contractors of many different disciplines, (scaffolders, fitters, sparkies, boiler makers/welders etc). Site personnel numbers can swell to many hundreds, which takes a lot of hard work and planning for everything to go safely and efficiently. If you are a passionate tradie and have a exceptional work ethic with a strong focus on safety, working the shutdowns can be very rewarding, and can also lead to a foot in the door for full time employment.

      That’s great to hear mate, it’s good to have some oil and gas input 😁 that’s a decent time between shutdowns, I guess it would be a massive job shutting down the gas plants, and less abrasive on the equipment?

    Interesting stuff. Do you come across older workers say in their 40's starting off doing trainee in belt splicing or tyre fitting? Are there 'general hands' type of workers employed in shutdowns?

    • @Keithy_W
      @Keithy_W  Місяць тому

      Absolutely mate. Age is only a number. If you’re fit and able to do the job, you’re employable. There’s work for belt teams, as well as general hands everywhere, especially during shutdowns.

    Hey Keithy. Love the vids very informative. Can you explain what happens to the current swing that is on when the shutdown happens truck drivers, boggers, jumbo, nipper crews? Is their pay reduced ? Do they get sent home?

    • @Keithy_W
      @Keithy_W  Рік тому +2

      Good question mate!
      No they don’t get reduced pay or sent home. There’s always work to be done in the mine, so they’ll often have earthmoving jobs in other areas on site (such as tailings dams, road maintenance, machine maintenance and extra training). It’s the perfect time to play catch up!

    Hey Mate thanks for all the useful videos, just been offered work out in Australia on the shut downs to get experience, hoping to get out in January how much can your earn a week/month as a fitter

      G’day and thanks Daniel 👍🏻
      Shutdowns are a great way to get in the door in the mines. Good work! As a fitter doing contract work I can’t be too specific as they vary, but you’d be earning easily over $1k per week. Most definitely a better question for your employer.

    G'day mate! I've just accidentally came to your video cause I was preparing working holiday in Aussie. Then I saw some difficulties about hearing or understanding radio english in mining.
    Literally I can't understand the words, pronunciation and also the situation. Can you get some advice or examples?

    • @Keithy_W
      @Keithy_W  7 місяців тому +2

      G’day mate, good to hear from you 👍🏻
      It can be difficult to understand Australian English, however, it does grow on you! Over time you will learn the Aussie slang (shortcut) words!
      The best advice I can give would be to watch some videos on UA-cam with “slang” in it, and you’ll find the way through it. There’s also no trouble is asking us to repeat ourselves 🤣

    Hi mate, what do boilermakers do on shutdown work? Is it hard to do? Thanks.

    • @Keithy_W
      @Keithy_W  Рік тому +1

      G’day mate, on a shutdown the plant and machinery are essentially “having a break”, so things can be rebuilt or repaired. As a boily you’d be hanging off a welder repairing things, essentially getting a heap of patch up jobs to do while the fitters pull things to bits.

    • @agaprimasto
      @agaprimasto Рік тому +1

      @@Keithy_W Thanks mate for your insight. I'm a bit nervous as next week will be my first swing. I heard that we don't need to worry about lacking experience in shutdown as what we will be doing is overplating and minor repairs welding. 😵‍💫

    Gday bro just wondering if scaffolding is a good job in the mines like how easy the job is to get and if if it’s decent pay etc. And do mines need them constantly or just during shutdowns? Thanks mate👍

    • @Keithy_W
      @Keithy_W  2 роки тому

      G’day mate
      Scaffolding is a team job. There is always work for scaffolders, 90% of it is during shutdowns. It’s not often used or required when a plant or machine is operating.
      I can’t comment on the pay for a scaffolder, but I’d imagine it to be “good” without being “life changing”!
