    This is a demo of some of my favorite toneprints for the TC Electronics Flashback Mini delay pedal.
    You can grab a Flashback Mini here***: amzn.to/2Tmvdj5

    I like the small form factor and the flexibility of the FB mini. They sound great and do many things really well, saving you money in the long run as it can act like many different pedals in one.
    I play toneprints demos of:
    Reverse Delay - 1:06
    EP-3 Delay - 3:12
    Ghostly Delay - 5:08
    Tape Delay - 6:31
    Space Echo - 7:24
    Modulated Delay - 9:07
    DM-3 Plus - 10:46
    I'm playing my PRS David Grissom and Custom 22 soapbar (with a DGT maple neck) into the Flashback Mini to the FYD Amps Big Verb (five watt Super Reverb) into a Two Notes Torpedo Live running the "Silver 10" impulse response. Then running into a MOTU 896mk3 into ProTools 11.

    I have the Alter Ego x4 and just love it. I had an RE-201 & an EP-3 back in the day. I hated how fast the tape got crappy sounding. There was a trick of stretching out a section of the drive belt to provide modulation on the EP-3s. The bone stock TC EP-3 toneprint nails that sound. Great videos! So glad to find your channel!

    Hey, having only recently discovered your channel and thoroughly enjoying your short history series, might I take this opportunity to say what a treat it is to hear the nuances of your playing? I understand the host of guest stars you've brought on board, who are wildly talented in their own right, but I also appreciate the seemingly instinctive feel you have for bringing out the subtleties of the gear you're playing with.

    Perfect choice of chord progressions to demo the pedal(I have had one for a few years but never explored the tone print possibilities) and well played. And yup, those DGT’s are gorgeous and sound great!

    How much I use an effect is very proportional to how much space I’ll allot on a pedalboard. I need very little delay, and a delay functions almost as a reverb, but without reverb’s usual pulling the signal out of the mix. With delay, I can still keep presence and with luck, I can also keep everything from sounding very rhythmic like The Edge from U2 on every song. That said, the mini pedal footprint correlated to the very small amount of delay I need (or want) in my signal. Anything bigger than the Flashback Mini has size, features, adjustability that I’ve never needed and don’t expect I’d ever use. Good review here.

    one thing to keep in mind....the artist toneprints for the Mini 2 are not available for the regular mini....each box has its own set of artist tone prints available...but you can still pretty much get any of the same sounds by spending some time tweaking....I just purchased the regular mini $(99 bucks)......one tone print....you can mess with the knobs to alter the tone print.....to change tone prints...hook it back up to the PC or go the I phone route.....this demo is the for the 2......

    Thanks, Keith. More pedal options... all I need! Seriously, I’m expanding to some electric guitar in my acoustic trio. Except for a Digitech Drop and a Blues Driver, my pedalboard is becoming a TC Electronic promotion, mostly because of TonePrint technology. I’m still thinking about running 2 delays like some guys run (Matt Schofield, in particular) with a tight slap back on all the time for fattening a single coil tone and the other for whatever delay I’m needing for the song. Regardless, the pedalboard is filling up fast, so I have to make decisions on which pedals I won’t need more control of. This is one.

      Hey Ken,
      Yeah, I've been trimming down myself, fewer and better is the mantra in my head. I have two Catalinbread Belle Epoch pedals. They are supposed to be the best possible repro of an Echoplex out there. Eric Johnson uses them now! And you know what, most of the time I have this mini running the EP3 toneprint on the demo board.
      Funny, I've been rewatching the two pedal show videos about Schofield this last week. I'm working on my jazz blues playing right now. I'll give you a quick reco, for that short single delay check out the Robben Ford toneprint. He uses it the same way as Matt does (well, Matt likely got it from Ford as he's one of his heroes.) . Then for the longer delay choose something with that nice modulation, like the EP3 or an Echorec style toneprint. Can you tell I've been leaning this direction myself?
      Thanks for writing. I'd be interested in knowing what makes the cut for your pedalboard in the end.
      Keith

      The pedalboard is growing faster than I thought (I bought a used pedal train mini from eBay). That would fit the bill perfectly, or so I thought. I have a a Boss Blues Driver, a TC Mojomojo, a Digitech Drop that I think I’ll use a LOT, and a Mooer Trelicopter. The “Add List” is a TC Hall of Fame 2 Because I want the MASH capability, a Flashback Mini and Flashback, a TC Spark for totally clean boost, but it can overdrive my amp (a Fender Champ tweed clone that a friend and guitar tech built for me with a Weber Vintage Series 8F125 that crunches nicely!). That may render the BD redundant. I’m looking at a EHX Soul Food that may give me enough dirt to remove the Mojomojo... just a cleaner heavy option. Too many options. And I may replace the Trelicopter with a TC Pipeline (again, the TonePrint makes more sonic options). A Helix (because I love the sound of a phaser) and a Dreamscape are possibilities down the road (the Dreamscape does flanger/vibe/chorus AND TonePrint, so that’s one pedal for 3 modulations). I’m using an off brand Telecaster (I bought it from the same guitar tech), but I’m leaning towards an Epiphone Sheraton II Pro (humbuckers with coil split controls). I’m liking The fact that it’s a semi hollow body... Otherwise I’ve already looked at the PRS SE line with that same option. My acoustic will go through a Zoom A3 preamp and it’s got a whole array of effects that I can use in one pedal, so that will sit next to the pedalboard (into a Fishman Loudbox Mini, then directly out into the board). I’ll need a Shure SM57 for the Tweed and I’ll be set. All for an acoustic trio (we all sing and harmonize - our group’s strength)... and the CONSTANT SEARCH for tone! Oh, and I’m a bassist at heart (since I was 15). Always played with excellent guitarists, so I never knew the struggle was so real! Now I get it. Maybe.

    • @fivewattworld
      @fivewattworld  6 років тому +1

      Ahh, you're making feel a little better about my little board here, but I'm not currently out gigging. I used to play in a jazz quintet, and over the years doing that my rig got more and more stripped down, but we also had a trio that would split out of that band (upright, vibes and guitar) and for that I'd carry EVERYTHING. I just felt like I needed more voices for variety in that context. I was sort of responsible for all the "atmosphere" if you will.
      Keep the tele or if you like the form factor look at thinline teles. I've had some over the years that I miss. I love my PRS's but I don't find the SE's sound "hollow" enough to suit me which is why I have the ES 390.
      And finally, I switched from the SM57 to a Sennheiser e906. I like how they sound and the form factor lets you hang them over the amp and negate the need to put the mic on a stand.
      I'm supposed to be working on this week's vid so I'd better get back to work. Thanks for sharing. One last thing, I agree that you've got lots of dirt pedals given that great little tweed amp. Check out Grissom boost and overdrive setups. Or one of the videos, like the one he made at Wildwood, where he describes how he uses the boost and dirt. Maybe you can make enough room for all those modulation pedals.;).

    • @lionsdenblog
      @lionsdenblog 6 років тому

      Thanks for the response, Keith. Yes... “atmosphere”. It’s actually very much what we do as performers. We play music, but we create atmosphere. I definitely want to have as many textures on hand as possible without needing 5 guitars or 30 pedals. I’m watching more “ambient guitar” videos (Chords of Orion), but am a very big fan of “That Pedal Show”. I enjoy Dan’s technical prowess of the inner workings of the pedals themselves, but tone is the necessity. I forgot to mention (because I’m not a technically gifted soloist) I’ll be investing in lessons soon with a friend of mine who is likewise searching for tone. I need to become more proficient for the benefit of the group. I use my ear a TON, but my fingers are not very fast... musical, yes, but never gonna shred. That’s why tone is so important.

    Good demo for those "clean chords" delays. If I may criticize one point: You should have played a short stopped chord at the beginning of each tone print to show how many repeats, etc. are on the preset. But then I guess you're demoing it just the way you use it.

      Great question. All of the factory TonePrints are also in the Toneprint Editor. The factory installed print is the TC 2290, their classic rack unit from the 80’s. I find most people find their favorite delay, save it as a “favorite” in the editor app and go back to that one. Lots of people, including Robben Ford have used the toneprint if the 2290 as their main delay sound on the Flashback.

    I’d recently lost my Boss DD-3 to old age (it was nearly 30) and had one of these kicking around which I’d never really gelled with but hadn’t got around to selling. Tweaked it using the editor software and now it does “that thing” that the DD-3 does with the repeats (there’s an unusually saturated feel and a low cut with the DD-3 that I love). Another good demo. I'm interested in getting this pedal eventually. I liked the PRS tone. I have to say, I'm not a fan of cutting to the off-axis shot from the 2 camera setup (assuming it was a 2-camera setup, not covering a mistake). I feel like that's very much a vlogger/reality TV and modern TV/Web approach, and I don't think that matches your approach which is quality of content, over quantity. Question: with the tap tempo feature you discussed, can you create a dotted 8th tone print in order to do dotted 8th if you are not good at just setting the timing manually, to get dotted 8th?

    • @fivewattworld
      @fivewattworld  5 років тому

      Hi Aaron,
      Thanks for the input on my early experiment with the two camera set up. I'd bought the second camera to use to film the pedals while I was demo'ing them and, well, this was my fourth ever video and yeah, I went a little too "60 minutes", :). It hasn't happened again.
      I've never tried to set up a dotted eighth using the tap temp. To be honest I don't often use the tap feature. As you say you might be able to to do so with pristine timing but I agree that delay pedals that have the quarter note, eighth note, dotted eighth are the only ones I could use to do this dependably for me at least.
      Thanks for writing and thanks for the input. Glad we agree.

    • @aaronblack425
      @aaronblack425 4 роки тому

      @@fivewattworld Four boards and the truth sounds better, but isn't exactly what you describe, if I understand right. Would it be one board company at a time (Temple, Pedaltrain, Holy Boards)? Or like all the TC pedals on a board, all the Xotic on a different board? The pedal makers are not very even right now about what they offer in a mini footprint. Example: Wampler has no distortion in a mini size currently (Tumnus, and a boost, no mini Pinnacle or Dracarys). Ibanez, no distortion/Marshall type pedal, only a metal pedal, TS9, or fuzz. Xotic has boosts, ODs, and Marshall tones (SL drive), but no mod, delay, verb, etc. Way Huge are making their Smalls series now, which are a different shape, but still tiny, AND all have top jacks, (Supa Lead, Supa Puss, Conspiracy Theory (Klone), Russian Pickle, and they have a chorus)--but it would mess up my concept of only the mini (1090NS) enclosure sized pedals.

The idea is to show how many sounds/colors you can get from four pedals. Each board would be just one company. So I'm putting the MXR board together now, then either JHS or Way Huge (Smalls). I'll do one a month for a year all using the same amp and guitars.

    Beautiful PRS guitars. Why have you got three that look to be identical?

    • @fivewattworld
      @fivewattworld  5 років тому

      They were three different DGT’s, made from different wood and w (slightly) different pickups. All 4 have since been sold, with some others. I’m playing Strandberg guitars now and loving them.

      five watt world Quite a change in direction, the DGT is quite traditional and kind of vintage in sound? The Strandberg guitars look very different? Odd shapes certainly and the lack of a headstock would take a little time to get used to? They appear to be more modern prog/fusion instruments?

      +Salvador Ramos yes, I think so. I believe that anybthst workbonnyhe minis can be losddd in the larger ones. The opposite isn’t tru but if you load one that doesn’t work you can just load a different one over the top.
      Glad you liked the video!

    Not knowing a ton about reverb or delay, I wish I’d bought the full version of the HOF and this delay so I could switch between the common delays and hear what makes them different.

      I think it’s great if you know what you’re looking for. But for a beginner I think it would be better to either get the full version so you can compare multiple tone prints and the default settings, or pick a regular delay pedal that you like and learn how it works. This is sort of halfway and it’s hard to learn on. It seems to make more sense to me for experienced people who know what they want in a small package. Just my opinion.

    and what are you playing first at minute 1:30...sounds kind of like Ireland and Pat Methany

    • @fivewattworld
      @fivewattworld  6 років тому

      I'm playing a version of the old traditional song "Shenandoah". My version is pretty heavily influenced by a great version that Bill Frisell did on a record where he dedicated it to the jazz guitarist Johnny Smith. I've added things to it like the intro and outro and hey, I can't play it like Bill so I just played it like...me. It does sound very traditional and Metheny recorded it with Charlie Haden once upon a time as well. So good ears, as always.

    Question about this pedal wich I cant seem to find a clear answer for. Can time division like a dotted 8th be programmed onto the minis?

    • @leftyshep
      @leftyshep 4 роки тому

      MJ Swanepoel - you can download the dotted 8th shared module from the TonePrint site. But you can’t set it on the unit in anyway without downloading the toneprint. Hope this helps

    Do you still use the peddle board "as normal" was internal programming is changed?

    • @fivewattworld
      @fivewattworld  6 років тому

      The toneprint changes the sound of the delay. The app on your phone lets you save your favorites so you can change it out easily. I most often use the EP-3 tape delay sound as my basic delay tone.
      Thanks for asking.

      It’s a Leo Brower classical etude that Randy Rhodes played on that Ozzy tune. Sadly Ozzy took credit for writing the tune when it was Randy’s classical guitar background that put those chords there. Good ears.

    What the heck, you start with a beautiful tobacco/cherry burst, Gibsonesque, PRS...And in no time, I blink and it's red!
    So , you've got the same expensive guitar in two different colours...that's excessive! And frivolous.
    I thought five watt world was all for the opposite not such excess...having less guitars and what not... Right??

    • @fivewattworld
      @fivewattworld  4 роки тому

      Hi Luey, It's worse than you thought, I had four DGT style guitars at that point in my life...and now they are all gone. In my defense, they were all different. The burst was a maple top where the red guitar was all mahogany, very different tone. I've since trimmed the numbers back only to see them grow again and now I'm in the process of trying to get back to essentials. Wish me luck as I do all of you folks out there as well.
