What is Session Zero in Dungeons and Dragons?

What is Session Zero and why should you do one of these in Dungeons and Dragons? DnD is a complex game, and setting the groundwork early is a great choice. Session zero has several goals, but ultimately its purpose is to get everyone on the same page BEFORE your first actual play session.
