    Great video!
    The unfortunate things about microwave ovens is when you get used to one, it ends up breaking. These appliances after the warranty expires are usually throwaways because depending on the brand, parts are no longer available. There is no way to practically know the features of the new one versus the old. I love this model because of the touch screen is glass vs membrane buttons which cracks after time. However the exhaust fan on the kitchenaid doesn't have a memory to hold last settings which requires you to step thru the speed settings. Still, the kitchenaid is a quality made appliance.

    Nice review, I just bought it this week and so far so good. I replaced a 10 year old GE Spacemaker that was working fine, but I wanted one with convection. Make no mistake, this thing is BIG, I had to make several modifications for this to fit, for this unit sticks out farther and rides lower than the older unit. Do not even think about installing this if your cabinet is less than 12 inches deep or it will not fit. My cabinets are just at 12 inches and the top mounting bolts sit as far forward as they can go. If your cabinets are 14 inches deep and you have at least 17 inches from the top of the cabinet to the bottom of the cabinet a standard installer can probably make it work. In my case, there was no way that this was going to be able to installed by the installation service from a big box store. I got this as an "open box" item for $275, as the previous buyer was unable to make it fit.

      you sir, have just saved me from purchasing this as a final sale unit from a closing Sears store. After reading your comment, I measured my cabinets which turn out to be just less than 12" deep. I too had a GE Spacemaker die recently and wanted to explore a new unit with more features. Looks like its back to GE models for me! Thank you and the OP for the information!

      Thank you for this advice. My cabinet is also less than 12 deep and I was just about to purchasing this model.

      Kenneth Southard I am right at 12” deep cabinet. 31” from top of cabinet cutout to cooktop surface. 60” from top of cabinet cutout to Kitchen floor. Yet the microwave measures up to be a beast and compared to our current microwave which is 14” height and this Kitchen Aid is 17”. It would leave very little clearance to cooktop not to mention it comes out 3” more than our current one which has a depth of 14”.

    Thanks for your review. Just got this unit, funny that our GE profile stopped working too!
    It seems to take longer to heat things than the old unit, despite being the same wattage, a really odd observation. It's so quiet, so I'll put up with the longer cool times.

      Yes it does take a little longer to heat up, but my unit is still going strong.

      Hi, Grimm, we just bought the same unit 3 days ago and the same issue you had, the noise. Can you tell us more about the noise you had? We are thinking to return it or may be just have their people to take a look at the unit. Thank you very much for your review. It helped a lot.

    Great review.....I actually installed the very same unit on New Years Eve, the microwave worked very well Anne my wife even said it sounde o much more quiet than our older one. Unfortunately, minutes after she went to use the convection feature and it was disturbingly noisy to the extent that I knew there was a problem with the unit! Today I took it down and returned it to Best Buy with no questions asked.....ill be receiving the very same unit on the 17th and will get back to let you know how that worked out! Lol. Thanks so much

    Common with microwaves, the door switch is either misaligned or needs to be replaced. Easy fix, but getting to the switch may or may not be easy. Whirlpool shows replacement to be fairly easy, but no repair service manual I could find.

    Can you show the kitchen timer feature in action? You can set the timer between 1 second through 99 minutes and 59 seconds. If you set it for 2 minutes and 60 seconds then hit start, it immediately starts at 3 minutes, 5.90 is 6.30 so on and so forth.

    Anyone care to do some speed tests on this microwave? I want to buy it on looks alone but a lot of reviews claim it is not as powerful as other 1000w microwaves. I currently have a older KitchenAid 1100w which needs replacing and also a sharp 1000w. If I take a 8 oz mug and fill it with 8 oz of water both at room temp (70), my KA takes 1 min 50 sec to reach a boil and the Sharp takes 2 min 20 sec. I would really like to know how this model compares before I buy it.
    KA does make 3 versions of this model. One is 1200w microwave with convection and the other is just a microwave (1000w). These 2 test significantly higher on Consumer Reports than this model. Problem is one is just a microwave and the other is pricey.

    Thank you for this very useful review. I searched on many websites for a picture of the microwave bottom for the size and location of the ventilation filters. I also liked to see the distance the microwave protrudes from cabinets. Do you think the ventilation is adequate for average cooking over your gas stove?

    • @jennifermendez9455
      @jennifermendez9455 7 років тому

      If you go on HomeDepots site I noticed in the description you can find the dimensions of the microwave. Then just measure the opening of your cabinets to determine how far it will protrude. I had to look for those to determine where to end our tile backsplash since we gutted our kitchen in a remodel. Here is the link. Hope this helps. www.homedepot.com/catalog/pdfImages/fe/fe41cec5-447d-4368-8fa4-3a9c73ec0b18.pdf

      my cabinets are 12 inches deep. The microwave sticks out 5-1/4 inches from the cabinet face. This is one of the highest output fan from a over the counter microwave. If you need more, have to get dedicated commercial hood. I have 15000 btu burners and have been ok; but you have to calculate the distance from stove top to hood to make sure.

    • @MrBigBird1776
      @MrBigBird1776 5 років тому

      ross ishima Our cabinets are 12 inches deep too. Depth of this Kitchen Aid microwave would greatly exceed that. We are interested in this microwave but the height of the microwave would also be lower to our cooktop. How much clearance do you have from range or cooktop in your setup? Thanks for your time and help! Our current microwave has a height of 14” and this Kitchen Aid would be 17”.

    I have this microwave. Only complaint is that it takes twice as long as my Panasonic 1200 watt inverter microwave

    • @rossishima
      @rossishima  2 роки тому

      I mentioned it takes longer than the other microwave, maybe 20% but does a better job of reheating. One thing to do is to gently lift the door by the handle when closing to reduce strain on the hinges; don't slam the door shut like the conventional small doored microwave. Otherwise, the Kitchenaid has been working like a champ and looks great.

    If you open the door to check the food, can you resume the cycle? Some reviews have said that there's no way to pause, so after checking whether food is done, you must restart from scratch. Is that true?

    • @hildamrodriguez2541
      @hildamrodriguez2541 2 роки тому

      Yes, ti can be paused. To pause just open the oven. The timer and settings will remain paused. When you close it back press start and it resumes right where it stopped. I love this microwave!

    • @ef2b
      @ef2b 2 роки тому

      @@hildamrodriguez2541 I had forgotten that I posted this question. We ended up purchasing one of these about a year ago and, for our oven, the answer is no, you cannot. If you are doing a simple timed cycle, then it is as you say, but if you are using any of the sensor based cycles, then it doesn't really work. When I open and close the oven, it goes back into sensing mode and it isn't right. For example, there's a dish I cook via Fresh Vegetables mode. Most of the cycle, the oven shows, "sensing" or something like that, and then towards the end, it kicks over to showing that 2 or 3 minutes remain. If I open the oven at that point, it will return to "sensing" rather than finishing the 2 or 3 minutes. I find it will run on "sensing" for 4 or 5 minutes before returning to showing 2 or 3 minutes of timed cooking remaining. This always happens and the dish is always overcooked.
      My experience of this oven after a year are
      1. I cannot cook on sensor node when the dish requires stirring or other manipulation mid cycle. This is a major loss compared to my previous oven.
      2. The oven is underpowered compared to its rating. This is as measured by me using thermometer, timer, and water
      3. Everything requires more button presses than my other oven because the manufacturer embedded the manual in the oven. What used to be two presses is now six and, since the keyboard often misses presses, it can be more. Unfortunatley, the instructions that come up don't given enough info if you _really_ need it and the written manual doesn't really exist other than a useless few pages. So, it just slows me down and doesn't help.
      4. The oven (used as an oven, i.e., not as a microwave) does not heat uniformly. It is good enough for what I do, but a real cook would be unhappy is my guess. The wire rack is tippy.
      I got the oven at about half off, otherwise I'd be furious. As it is, it gets the job done, but there are types of cooking I just cannot do that I used to do easily with a microwave that listed for 1/5 the cost of this one.

    • @markw4692
      @markw4692 Рік тому

      Caution: I had Best Buy install mine, and they subcontracted to a guy that used power tools on the overhead bolts, and used them in a way to align the microwave. Unfortunately the installer over-torqued the bolts causing damage to the integrity of the door, and slightly creased the metal door seal. So, the door will not close without lifting the handle each time. Now after 3 months of this, the door switches have prematurely worn out, and I am here to figure out how to repair them. :(

    • @rossishima
      @rossishima  6 років тому

      my over micro-hood was always set to vent to the exterior. This model has one of the highest cfm for a micro-hood. If you need something stronger, you would need a dedicated hood and get a counter or built in microwave instead.
