I am confused between the type of lion dance drummings, i know there is hung gar, another type done by master siow and another type that is the most common, widely used today especially in asia
There are many variations these days, and teams can mix parts of different styles together. Master Siow's style is more Hoksan 7-star drumming, ex: ua-cam.com/video/efVf8pyW7Hs/v-deo.html Hung gar example: ua-cam.com/video/t9u_AB7vJBM/v-deo.html There are also Jow ga, HK (ua-cam.com/video/eH1dVnZaWeo/v-deo.html - more rolling beats), etc. We were taught Futsan 3-star (just what we called it) and it has a mix of some 7-star components in it. You can find many variations to all of these, and also hear similarities to the drum (when certain sections start, stop, etc).
Do you mean these lions? ua-cam.com/video/ZdnsP-JMKa4/v-deo.html If so, those are Northern Lions. Some do acrobatics, but they are not as common as the Southern Lions. ua-cam.com/video/4WIvA4U9oJ8/v-deo.html
yeah..thats the one..is that northern lion?now i know the differences between em..thanks man..and that northern lions are more terrifying than entertaining..my kids never cheer for the northern one..the would run and cry..hahaha..but for me..i love them both..if its chinese new year..this is the only thjng im excited about..besides ang pao of course..thanks man..and happy chinese new year..gong xi fatt choy!
+33 Chain Hello! For our team, we play the same beat, with variations and different components depending on the routine. The Lions do/can have different drum styles, with the hoksan dancing more to 7-star drum and futsan to 3-star drum.
I don't like the look of the Hok San Lion Head, it looks goofy, I prefer the old classic traditional style Futsan style, it looks way much better than the Hok San Style. It does look like a duck rather than a Lion Head. That'd why I don't like the look of the Hok San Lion Head, it's ugly. The Hok San Lion Head is lighter than the old traditional Futsan style, different materials used, that's why the Hok San Style is used in major competitions because it weighs much less than the Futsan style. They should use lighter materials but still use the Futsan style when making Lion Heads, simply because the Futsan style looks better than the Hok San duck lip Lion Head.
I just have to sign in and thank you for this, it helps on my research a lot! Thank You!!
You are very welcome. Glad we could help. Thank-you for your support!
I like the futsan because i like the curve mouth and a pointy horn
Futson lion is a master and the Hukson is a student
That’s how I see it
Yeah that's a really good way of seeing it
Woww
Are there any physical differences with the Jow Gar Lion? or is it purely in the dance method and technique?
It is more in the method and technique, though you may find for Jow Gar the lions are more traditional (futsan-style) (vs hoksan).
I like the Hoksan one
Nice
The lip on the futson is cures
Why do old lions is very diffren than the nowadays one why not keep the previous
I prefer fut san. He looks way cooler imo

I have a question, do both of the lion has different drum beat or the same?

5elementsld Alright thanks a lot
One of the advantage of futsan is you can see better
Actually it's like this if hoksan it's a girl but if it's futsan lion it's a boy
Traditionally, all lions are considered male. These days, some teams are more open and may consider some lions female.
