  • This very compressed and summarized version of the truly expansive history behind lion dancing. Lion dancing is a cultural and historic art that stems from ancient Chinese legend. Despite being hundreds of years old, lion dancing has persisted as a custom that is now practiced not only in China, but all over the world.
    Not only has it remained a training tool utilized by kung fu practitioners - lion dancing is a long-held tradition that is believed to grant viewers with good luck, good fortune, and vitality to the people.

    Wait wait wait... If black is an unlucky colour, and lion dance is on Chinese new Year, WHY DO THEY HAVE BLACK LIONS?!?!

    • @vandijk2636
      @vandijk2636 7 місяців тому +1

      The color black is not universally considered unlucky in all cultures. In some cultures, including Chinese culture, black is associated with power, authority, and protection against evil spirits. During Chinese New Year celebrations, the black lion dance is performed to symbolize warding off evil spirits and bringing good luck and prosperity for the coming year. It's a tradition rooted in symbolism and cultural beliefs rather than a belief in the color black being unlucky.

    • @vandijk2636
      @vandijk2636 7 місяців тому +1

      And the reason why u don't wear black during cny is because wearing black, a color associated with funerals and mourning, is seen as bringing negative energy and potentially symbolizing a wish for misfortune or sadness during a time of celebration. So having a black lion dance symbolises something different compared to you wearing black outfits

    I live in New Zealand and I'm thinking about getting a lion. How would I arrange for a dotting ceremony?

    • @anthonynguye
      @anthonynguye 6 років тому

      You could either contact a Buddhist temple for eye-dotting. Not sure if that will completely work but I’ve seen it happen with other lion dance teams or you can get in touch with a certified sifu specializing in eye-dotting.

    Is the lion dance something that is culturally locked (as in, people of other cultures are not to participate in the dance itself and are merely relegated to bystanders) or is it open for people of different cultures to learn?

    • @ChineseLionTamer
      @ChineseLionTamer  7 років тому +5

      Not at all! As far as my teachers are concerned, anyone willing to learn is welcome to try the lion dance. Our school has taught the art of kung fu and lion dancing to many people of various backgrounds! The vital factor is that any student learning must be willing to be patient, respectful, and hardworking! :)

    • @moonstruck8245
      @moonstruck8245 7 років тому +2

      Oh good! I've always been interested in learning the Lion Dance (along with learning Chinese - I'm half Japanese, half Nahuatl) but I didn't want to risk being disrespectful. I know there are some things that are culturally locked, and no one but natives of that particular culture should practice them.

    • @ChineseLionTamer

      I would be interested in learning about that! This video was a very small summation of the history that my teachers taught me, but there is certainly far more that can be learned depending on the region and era you are studying. At this time, I am not well versed enough in this topic to speak on it confidently, but I'll keep it in mind!
