The Killers - Read My Mind (lyrics)

- On the corner of main street
Just tryin' to keep it in line
You say you wanna move on and
You say I'm falling behind
Can you read my mind?
Can you read my mind?
I never really gave up on
Breakin' out of this two-star town
I got the green light
I got a little fight
I'm gonna turn this thing around
Can you read my mind?
Can you read my mind?
The good old days, the honest man
The restless heart, the Promised Land
A subtle kiss that no one sees
A broken wrist and a big trapeze
Oh well I don't mind, if you don't mind
'Cause I don't shine if you don't shine
Before you go, can you read my mind?
It's funny how you just break down
Waiting on some sign
I pull up to the front of your driveway
With magic soaking my spine
Can you read my mind?
Can you read my mind?
The teenage queen, the loaded gun
The drop dead dream, the Chosen One
A southern drawl, the world unseen
A city wall and a trampoline
Oh well I don't mind if you don't mind
'Cause I don't shine if you don't shine
Before you jump,
Tell me what you find..
When you read my mind
Slipping in my faith until I fall
You never returned that call
Woman, open the door, don't let it sting
I wanna breathe that fire again
She said I don't mind if you don't mind
'Cause I don't shine if you don't shine
Put your back on me
Put your back on me
Put your back on me
The stars are blazing like rebel diamonds, cut out of the sun
Can you read my mind
I feel like everyone kind of forgets this song. It's so underrated.
+cheesecake134 That's because most of people today listen to shitty 1D and JB etc. This is beautiful music with talented singers and lyrics that never fail to make me smile ^.^
+Sebastian X Ciel (Elise Miskelly) True, true. But even for a Killers song this is a bit underrated. Most people only know Mr. Brightside, When You Were Young, and Somebody Told Me. These aren't bad songs, but i wish the Killers had a broader audience.
Vault 111 Everyone always listens to the 'top charts' though and most stuff like this band is lost in the confusion of celebrities and what happens in their lives. It's quite sad :(
Sebastian X Ciel Very true. Most people know a couple Killers songs though, because pop radio still plays their songs occasionally (at least in my town.) But most people tend to think the only music being produced is that top 40 garbage. Or with the celebrities thing: Most people don't even care about Muse and their songs, but everyone knows Matthew Bellamy because he's a famous celebrity. Or even more: Kanye West, a despicable person to say in the least, is really only known for all his stupid statements and not his "music."
Vault 111 I love Muse :) And it just really irritates me when people shun you for loving music that they haven't even heard of. I've heard 1D songs and Justin Bieber etc ( because of hearing people play it almost every fucking day and you can't go anywhere without hearing about something to do with them ), and yeah, I admit that I don't like it and I find it to be a lack of talent, and I can say that because I have heard it.
But then for others to hear a name of a band, ( for example ) Three Days Grace, and to have not even heard any of their songs and then try and say it's shit? Just rude and immature.
Rosé brought me here and omg this song is so good 😭
Lol. Same here.

The Killers are a true band. They don't make mainstream music or try to impress the tabloids... They're just themselves and speak and perform what's inside them. Brandon Flowers is a poet and i feel lucky to have him in our day and age.
It's crazy to read this now 12 years later. RIP Brandon Flowers

If this song was released tomorrow, it would go straight to number one. It's timeless
I love this song, but for some reason it makes me long for something. Like nostalgia over something from a different lifetime.
I live in a "two star town" and I still haven't given up on leaving it behind.
yea like that's basically me except i literally get nostalgic with every single song and it's just this beautiful mix of happiness and i'm looking for something but i don't know just what it is yet
It reminds me of a song I heard once when I was a lot younger and I really want to hear it again but I just can't seem to find it.
There really needs to be a word for that. A "nostalgia for a life unlived". Pseudostalgia maybe, or parastalgia.

"I pull up to the front of your driveway, with magic saoking my spine" - I know that feel so well... That line gives me the chills every time.
Can you explain that one to me? I don't understand the feels from that line.
Doppelkeks7 I totally agree with you bro, this is my favorite line in the song! anditspaganpoerty my interp has always been that it's those moments right before you're about to see someone that you really love, and the feels that go with those moments :)
I always thought it meant he was on acid.... no joke
money mike HAHAHAHA i literally laughed out loud because I thought the exact same thing for years!
@@anditspaganpoetry its about acid, not a feeling a love.
this one actually gives me shivers - favourite from The Killers
dgmcl3284 That must be the magic soaking your spine!

The stars are blazing like rebels dimonds, cut out of the sun.......thats poetry !!!
I rate this as the best Killers song full stop, and one of the most brilliant songs of the last decade - so good I REWROTE it without realising one day when I was messing about on guitar. I thought "I like that", and I was quite pleased with myself until I realised I'd just unconsciously copied this tune(there's few more disappointing feelings than writing something you're proud of only to realise you've nicked it!).
My spine lit up when the synth came in at the start. Gorgeous.
WOMAN, OPEN THE DOOR
DON'T LET IT STING
I WANNA BREATHE THAT FIRE AGAIN!
I hope it's O.K. that I am listening to the Killers pretty much all of the time. The lyrics, the singing, the rhythm and fullness of each song, never gets tiring. Just love them. Thanks for posting the lyrics!
It doesn't matter how heartbroken you are today. Believe me, you'll get through it. And you will be able to sing out loud when you listen to this song, instead of crying. You do mind. And you do shine. And the best you can do is to take that person out of your life.
I know this from experience it's true. Stay strong and survive for better times, it's worth it!
A special song....makes your hair stand on end.....I can't explain it...
The expression is "its got power"
+Collin Hunter Yeah, it's sad to think the things we feel are chemicals. Although, Science has gotten us through a lot of mysteries, it tends to be pretty inaccurate sometimes or tends to jump to a sudden conclusion, which is inefficiency at worst.
+Eric Scott so the love I feel is just...
My Chemical romance.
I'll leave now
Shadøw Øf An Angel My Chemical Romance can depend, it can be a great, great band or a chemical that makes you love the band. I tend to believe it's just a great band.
+Sandy Combs Funny enough, the song is giving me goose bumps. Been listening to it five or six times in a row and can't get away from it so will keep playing it. Must be that euphoric reaction Collin Hunter is talking about. Many songs by The Killers or Brandon alone seem to do that to me !
"with magic soaking my spine..." Lovely.

"The stars are blazing like rebel diamonds, cut out of the sun"
simply amazing :D
I'm about 99% sure The Killers have a direct line to my emotions. They have a song for everything.
This song will forever hold a most special place. I discovered the killers 15 years ago. I was 14, grew my own pot plants. Getting high as hell I'd always listen to this laying down doing backflips in outer space of my conscience
This is my life's theme song... even all these years later. Timeless.
This came out when i was like a sophomore in high school, fell in love with this damn song right away.
This has got to be my favorite Killers song. :D
"A southern drawl, a world unseen; a city wall and a trampoline" (Love this line!)
I’m just here to remind u of this song.. just in case you forgot 😁
@@gregorybritt4762 I had not listened to this song in about 10 years.
Brings back great memories of moving oil rigs with my best friend. On the way home at the end of the day we would always absolutely BLARE this song. Or whenever we were headed to the Motocross track we would turn on the song Mutiny by Set Your Goals.
@@geezee1946 such a great song 🥲
ridiculously amazing! something enigmatic and ethereal about this song. I'm not sure exactly what, can't really pit my finger on it, but yeah, the feels.
Ethereal is a really good word to describe the beauty of this song.
it just keeps me calm
I remember falling in love with this the first time I saw it on VH1, good ole days 😂
Thanks rosie for this wonderful song💘

My life long goal has always been to become an astro-physicist and this just makes my heart soar.
You get one of these lives, that we know for sure.
Go be that astrophysicist and don't let anything stop you.
Exactly. The real underlying insult is being offended by it.

Hello from 2021
Haunting, optimistic, and timeless.
Amazing to me is the somewhat out of sync backing vocals toward the end. The most powerful part of the song is literally timeless.
Glad Rosé shared this on her IG. I wish I grew up listening to this
"I don't shine if you don't shine." That's my favourite part!! I love the Killers immensely!!
Was the summer of '07 I believe. My grandfather used to have a beautiful house along the shore of Lake Superior in Michigan's Upper peninsula in a small town called Munising that our family would always spend about a month at every summer. A couple months prior I got the Sam's Town CD from a Barnes and Noble and it became my new musical obsession upon first listen. My parents had just bought me an iPod for Christmas the previous year and I kept nagging my mom to help me burn my CDs onto the iPod before we left for my grandfather's place, which she eventually did. Listened to the album on repeat on the drive up there with my ear buds plugged in to the iPod and all during that particular visit that year, life was good.
Now everytime I listen to Sam's Town and this song in particular, memories of that summer just come flooding back like a tidal wave.
This song is so dam sad and yet the music isn't especially sad. It has that feel particularly with the lyrics of looking back at what you've lost and will never get back
a subtle kiss that no one sees
+Johnathan Lannister A broken wrist and a big trapeze
Oh well I don't mind, if you don't mind
'Cause I don't shine if you don't shine
Before you go, can you read my mind?
What a beautiful moment, isn't it...?
The stars are blazing like rebel diamonds, cut out of the sun
this song reminds me of a song when I was a baby
Still touches my soul
This kind of music is gone .amazing song
I love this song so much, it's gotten to be a problem😍😂
BISMILLAH............., Very nice, I LOVE IT.
I'm going to turn this thing around 🎶
Maddyroo... exactly what I was thinking... Can you read my mind??
Knew this song for a very long time (I think it was a car ad, or something like that), but only now I found that's a Killers' song.
I remember Mr. Brighside on a shampoo add.
This is an amazing song.. given me hope for pastures new finally done wot I needed to do
Born in 85 and this song is one of the best i have ever listened to!
absolutely in love with this song
Just...
Beautiful.
This never gets old
The first killers song I heard like a while while while ago maybe when I was like younger and I remember when i saw the video and the song made me cry cause it's so beautiful
Reminds me of a time before everything went so crazy.
FLIPPING LOVE THIS SONG
I will say that the Killers are my favourite band of the 21st century (considering radiohead as a 90s band) and easily a top 5 favourite alt rock band.
I can’t believe I forgot about this , it takes me out of feeling low ❤️
I heard this on the radio and after the song was done I pulled over and wrote the words that I could remember so I could listen to it here. Now its one of my favorites.
I just like how poetic it sounds.
A subtle kiss that no on sees
A broken wrist and a trapeze
The teenage queen a loaded gun
A drop dead dream the chosen one
A southern drawl a world unseen
A city wall and a trampoline
It just had that really vivid imagery you can only find in poems.
i always thought he said ' the shadow play that no one sees' x)
they used to be my favorite band as a kid. i stopped listening to rock for a while, but i need something mellow to ease my mind. this song and a blunt of some bomb is a good way to relax
The lyrics will never be as appreciated as they deserve to be.
The killers are one of the last bands to make genuinely good music.
I want to breathe that fire again
1:25 I've always heard "So what" instead of "oh well"
I heard "oo-woah" lol. This song still gives me shivers! I love this song!

Killers man.. a band I always come back to now and again, and remember how great they are.
Was in my car with my boyfriend the other day we had the windows down as it was a nice pleasant sunset in California that day. We were driving down this long stretch of highway that connects my suburban area to the more metropolitan area. I for some reason decided to turn the radio on (instead of our usual spotify playlist) when this song came on, we havent heard this song since we were kids!! Needless to say nostalgia hit us like a ton of bricks and I was trying to remember why I stopped listening to rock when I had LOVED it so much as a kid. I could feel the wind picking up as my bf pushed the throttle and new if I didnt put the windows up soon my hair would be messed up by the time we got to dinner, but it was worth it as we sang along to the radio:
_I don't mind if you don't mind,_
_'Cause I dont shine if you dont shine.._
*It was something magical.*
I think Sam's Town is one of those albums that only gets better with age.
i remember my brother would play this song all the time, and i would always listen, but i never asked him what the title was. But i found it again! It's more amazing than i remember
Omg rose thankyou for your beautiful song
Thank you father for introducing me to the killers when I was young so I could grow up with music like this :)
