- In the Fourth Episode of The Best Star Wars Character of All Time Series, I go over the "The Stoic Warrior", Mace Windu. In this Mace Windu Character Analysis, I talk about the qualities and events that make Mace Windu such a special character in the Prequels.
I'm sure everyone has someone they picture as the Best Star Wars Character, and I know I have quite a few. My goal in this Star Wars Video Essay is to show how many great characters there are and why any one of them could be considered the greatest star wars character of all time.

Canonically in the sky walker saga, probably mace. Can you do palpatine next?
I will definitely do Palpatine at some point, but it might not be until I get through a few more characters first, I kind of want to build up towards him

In the novel Shatterpoint, there was something that was very interesting to me. At one point, Mace was thinking about the Battle of Geonosis, when he stood in front of Dooku with his lightsaber at Jango's neck. He regretted not killing Dooku there. As a Jedi, he understood that it was against the Code, but he thought if he had killed him, the war would never have started and by that he could have saved millions, though sacrificing his own morality. He then came to the conclusion that next time he won't hesitate. This gave so much context to what he chose to do after defeating Palpatine.

In the novel Dark Disciple, Mace is the first one suggesting killing Dooku so the war could end.
Tbh if u dont kill evil it will continue to spread pain & suffering.
Batman & Joker if not most of his villains.
If Qui-Gon is a true jedi then Windu is a true one too however Qui-Gon is way to weak to be a master & Mace was smart enough to never trust the prophecy or Anakin for example the moment he did start to trust him, Anakin cuts his hand off so without a doubt the smartest Jedi.

That's good character development and makes a lot of sense
Mace represents someone who Anakin could've become had he not turned to the dark side. Their personalities are fairly similar in many ways (except the attitude towards the code). Maybe that's why they clashed.
Definitely possible and yea they both use anger and compassion to fuel them during a lightsaber fight and they are both fearless leaders who wont crack under pressure
@The Hollow Called White The only way Anakin couldn't have turned is if he was honest with Obi-Wan or Yoda but he never is only Padmé knows his dark secrets so in a way its safe to say Anakin never trusted anyone but his mom & Padmé.
I don’t think this is the case at all. Anakin was either going to be raised by Qui Gon or he was going to be Vader. That’s why Palpatine genuinely feared qui gon. He had the same strength in the force to bring out someone’s good nature as much as sidious could use his to bring out the evil in someone
An absolutely subtle detail: when Mace Windu confronts Palpatine and Anakin arrives, Windu shouts: "Don't listen to him, Anakin!" This is the first time in the movie, when he calls Anakin by his name (except the AOTC). Yes, it shows that he is the "father" for him at that moment. This happens after Anakin says that Palpatine is a Sith, and Mace answers: "If what you told me is truth, you've gained my trust" - Mace has realized, that this is truth. But it is too late. The real precision of Lucas's dialogues.

Mace still never truly trusted Anakin. If he had, things would had been alot different.

This scene is the ultimate proof that Mace was little more than an arrogant hypocrite. You point out yourself that he has done nothing but treat Anakin with contempt up until that point. He himself had just had the opportunity to kill Palpatine but grandstanded at the last moment because the Code wouldn’t allow HIM to kill an unarmed opponent. Yet it is perfectly acceptable for Anakin to clean up yet another mess that the Jedi council has made, despite himself only being allowed on the council to be a puppet of it.
Windu sucks even if he wasn’t already a complete shithead, who lead 200 knights into a bloodbath. That they reached there with reinforcements so far behind, with so few numbers to begin with, is just evidence of his arrogance and lack of accountability that the Jedi as a whole display during the Clone Wars.
In the novelization, Mace reveals that they've narrowed down possible suspects for Sidious down to Palpatine's inner circle. This gives him tangible reason to distrust Palpatine's influence on Anakin.
He also said that the only reason Palpatine himself wasn't a suspect was because he was, for all intents and purposes, already the Emperor. He just hadn't made it official yet.
Mace was a Jedi that was harsh and perhaps cold as well, but also showed that he was fearless in battle, unswerving loyalty and was very principled. In short he is/ was on of the most respected Jedi ever and would probably be the number one that you would choose in battle to be by your side. But as a friend or someone to turn to in times of struggle he lacked that quality. I love Mace’s quote to Palpatine in the Chancellor’s office at the start of Episode II: “If they do break away- … if they do you must realise that there aren’t enough Jedi to protect the republic, we’re keepers of the peace, not soldiers”. That shows what the Jedi used to be and what they still believe that they are when in reality they have become the opposite.
Very refreshing to see a content creator who doesn't make blanket statements condemning the Jedi but understands that they were flawed heroes who meant well, but made mistakes, mistakes they ultimately rectified.
People hate Mace because he's blunt and arrogant. Thing is, he has reason to be. It's not hard to get fooled by your own achievements, or by Palpatine. Mace ultimately does what's right. There's a reason all the other Jedi defer to him, and why he is Yoda's equal. He understands the danger of Palpatine but the inability to do anything about him-just like Yoda. He understands Anakin's flaws and strengths but not his motivations-just like Yoda. He saved the day on Geonosis and nearly undid Palpatine's entire plan but was outsmarted, just like Yoda. The only difference is Yoda survived long enough to learn. Mace represents what the Jedi are: while not always in control of the situation, they are always in control of themselves. He couldn't save himself or the Jedi, but he saved the Galaxy.

I feel like the reason Dark Mace is such a common thing in the fanbase is that he's the only good guy character that doesn't really show any emotion.
Most of the ways people describe Mace as could also be used for Imperials, just in a more negative context. He's a good guy.
But his character matches up with Tarkin more than Luke or Obi.

I think I’m one of the only people who think mace is a good Jedi. He shows compassion to his troops, loves his Jedi comrades and considers them friends, and was very smart. People don’t like him because he’s rude to anakin but if you were in maces place you’d be annoyed by him too. Plus, as soon as windu started trusting anakin he died so…

Mace may represent some of the Jedi’s worst traits but that doesn’t mean he is nothing but an arrogant jerk. He’s a flawed man but he’s also well intentioned.
I think this a good answer. All the Jedi, even Yoda, have their own weaknesses, flaws, and biases. But what differentiates them from the sith is they don’t just do what they “think” is right, but they always strive to put others first and be self sacrificial and humble. Even with all of their own unique traits and personalities.

The only Jedi Mace is kind to is mostly his follow council members. But towards the likes of Qui-Gon Jinn, Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano, he is not kind to at all.

The jedi way does not promote favoritism toward a potential chosen one over others padawan. Mace had no reason to treat him differently than others. Yes he was severe but not a complete jerk, he did regret killing Jango in clone wars and he did say to Anakin that he would have gained his trusts if he was right about palpatine and guess what when he tried to execute palpatine he let his defense down and let anakin take him by surprise . So is it Windu's fault for not trusting Anakin?! Was anakin honest with the council? Did anakin always follow the code? Windu may be flawed but he is not arrogant, he is just a pragmatic jedi trying to do is job following the code in a biased way .
@@aristidebeauvois276 I can tell from that long rant that you like Windu a bit... too much. Also not surprising that you're totally missing the point. Windu was not just that way just with Anakin. Mace has been like that all of his life. He treats those who deems lower than him with disdain and contempt. Like Qui-Gon. Best prime example is how he acted when Ahsoka was framed for the bombings at the temple. After it was all set and done, instead of saying sorry to Ahsoka, he basically takes NO accountablitity at all. He basically just says: "Oh it was the will of the force." and had the AUDACITY to ball his fists up once Ahsoka left the room. Also note, Mace has always been jealous of Anakin and it showed. From the moment, Qui-Gon brought him there. If Windu TRULY trusted Anakin at all, then why would he tell Obi-Wan later: "I don't trust him." His words. Another note: if Anakin had told the council about his marriage and having a baby, they would judge him and expel him. Which Obi-Wan himself points out! Just for having feelings or attachments. It's also ironic that for all of their rules on attachments, Windu has one above all others: The Republic itself. So yes, Mace Windu was always a jerk. A self-righteous and hypocrite one at that. The ONLY one respects at all was Yoda. So... yeah.
I wish they would've kept Samuel L. Jackson as Mace's voice for the animated series. He would've been more awesome if that happened.

It kind of sucks to find out the majority of the community hates Mace just because he's blunt and rude, I always liked him, his heart's in the right place.
I mean he was kind of right about Anakin not being emotionally ready enough to be a master, he really only achieved that in Episode 5.
tbf I think it was more hating him because he actually embodied pretty well how arrogance and pride blinded the jedi order and made them choose poorly in important moments, even if they wanted to do it for the right reasons.
in many of the clone wars episodes, while having good intentions, his actions are mostly framed as impulsive and impractical, all just to mantain the ideals of what he thought the jedi code meant.
also, anakin had always been emotionally constipated because of his role as a slave, but it all became worse mostly thanks to the things both yoda and mace said to him; they molded him from a fearful child to an enraged and resented adult themselves by their actions and lack of common sense and empathy with a troubled men.
not to say anakin wasn't at fault too, but it was mostly the jedi (represented by windu) who hurt and changed anakin, predisposing him to prefer a "non-judgmental and open-minded" sith like sidious over the cold and cruel jedi order.
Mace was the embodiment of following 'The Code' above all else. Probably even above the will of the force. His narrow minded vision was at its worst when after Ahsoka was proven innocent all Windu could say was to tell her that the force works in mysterious ways and that it was a test for her.
Wow just wow mace was always a 8/10 character for me but after watching this video he's a 10/10 an amazing yet flawed character really does deserve more love than people thinking hes a jerk for nothing.

Your wrong about Mace Windu’s greatest mistake. His error was accidentally using Palpatine’s words towards Anakin. NOT never giving him trust!
He was the only sane Jedi during the end of the Clone Wars.

One thing I really like in this series of yours is how you examine these characters through their depiction in the *movies* themselves, rather than injecting from expanded universe material. It shows how much more there is to these films, their stories and their characters than the casual watch might suggest. That you could glean so much from Mace Windu beyond much of the fandom's misinformed perception of him as a stiff asshole is outstanding, and I applaud you for it. Just goes to show you how deliberate Lucas's writing is. It may not be particularly skillful, but it gets the point across quite cleanly, leaving little to no room for misinterpretation - that people seem to entertain anyway...

Naw bruh, he was the closest to saving the Republic in the end. It was Anakin who got in his way and prevented it. Had he killed Palpatine, he was probably willing to take the fall if that meant the Jedi survived.
@@thegreatpage5912 that was his plan to save the republic and restore peace but that was anakin's job as the chosen one to do so but also he was clouded by the fact that anakin couldn't be trusted because of his deep connections with the chancellor and because of that anakin couldn't feel trusted by anyone other than palpatine so he turned to him in the end

@@thegreatpage5912 The Prophecy of the Chosen One does not speak of permanence; imbalance could certainly return to the Force, but the supposed sequels were deeply terrible in their treatment of that subject.

Yes and no . Mace is a self fullfilling prophet , he predict that Anakin is dangerous , he predict that it is risky to put him with Palpatine and he predict that they may have to remove Palpatine from office . Yet he is a part of why his predictions come to happen but above all he tries to do the right thing but flawed as he is he fail because he missed the point : rather than training to become a warrior powerful enough to rival sidious ( which he managed ) he should've educated anakin reassuring him and prove him that he trust him , this is what palpatine did and this is how palpatine won by recognizing that Anakin was the most important .

Man every time I see mace die I get pissed how you gonna kill my boy mace.
Mace Windu is key and central to every bad decision that the Jedi make in the Prequel trilogy.
In Attack of the Clones, he and the Jedi Council learn that a former Jedi (Count Dooku) was probably involved in the attempt on Padme - he refuses to accept that because of his blinkers.
Again, in the same movie, Windu and Yoda are far too slow to investigate the creation of the Clones, especially because a former Jedi was involved.
If there was any Jedi who (unconsciously) assisted Palpatine, it was Mace Windu.
Samual Jackson nailed this role. and pretty much all of the actors casted nailed their roles... like cmon what other person could ever play the role of Qui Gon Jinn other than Liam Neeson?

Windu has been in both of the original Battlefronts. If I have to choose one, I'd prefer Qui Gon. He's a way better and more important character who has yet to receive some love in that series (Not to mention we'd get emotes like 'there's always a bigger fish' 'the negociations will be short' and 'the ability to speak does not make you intelligent').
Not to say I wouldn't like Windu and his purple lightsaber, but Qui gon, Gideon, Viszla, Thrawn, Cad Bane, Ventress, Ahsoka, Kanan, the Grand Inquisitor and maybe Rex are higher on my list.
Also BF3 MUST have splitscreen galactic conquest. That mode was my childhood and my brother and I would pay full price just for it with BF2's graphics, units and gameplay.
Sam Jackson just wanted a purple saber, that's why he got it
IC: Mace uses a variant of Form VII Vapaad which uses the Dark Side energy of his opponents against them, which is why Mace is able to go toe-to-toe with Palpatine versus the 4 Jedi Masters who were quickly taken out,
OOC: The reason Mace had a purple lightsaber is because SLJ wanted his lightsaber to be "unique"

For every two things I hate about Mace Windu. There's at least one thing I like about him. It's kinda a love hate relationship.
One thing that always gets me scratching my head is how both obi wan and mace literally swap complete beliefs about anakin from AOTC to ROTS. First obi wan has no faith or trust in anakin and mace reassures him that they need him. In ROTS mace doesnt trust anakin at all but obi wan defends anakin. Complete 180 for the both of them.

Honestly that’s what I like about him funny enough 😂. He is who he is and doesn’t care what others think of him. He does what he thinks is right and doesn’t care if people don’t like him for it. He wasn’t a Jedi to make friends, he was there to do his job and enforce the Jedi code and it’s beliefs. Plus I do think he has some good qualities besides that

Mace is not even close to actually being stoic. He’s basically a scared little female dog. Qui-gon is actually stoice, letting emotions roll off while accepting them and staying in the present.
Mace is the perfect embodiment of the evil of the jedi order. Perfectly characterized to frame palpatine as a hero.

@Omni-Man You have to understand George Lucas's overarching themes. Those were carried over into the Clone Wars by Dave Filoni.
Mace is powerful and very skilled...none of that matters.
Yoda's Jedi Order was a failure. The way it was training Jedi, the way it removed itself from the plight of everyday people, the arrogance of the Council, the way it became tools if the Senate.
Per Dave Filoni and George Lucas the Jedi lost the Clone Wars spiritually and militarily.
Mace epitomizes the arrogance of Yoda's Jedi Order.
Within the movies Mace has very little screen time and dialogue.
George Lucas uses him as a plot device to turn Anakin.
Mace is effective for the point George Lucas is making about Jedi failure.
Mace Windu fans just aren't in on the joke apparently. They miss the broader point Lucas was making.
Being very powerful and awesome with a lightsaber doesn't make you a great Jedi. Mace wasn't a great Jedi.
@Omni-Man Mace isn't directly evil but he does embody all the mistakes and flaws of Yoda's Jedi Order since he' s Yoda's #2.
One of the key points of George Lucas' Prequels is that the Jedi under Yoda had failed the Force and themselves.
Mace is a prime example of that through his arrogance and close mindedness.
Windu is literally the embodiment of everything wrong with the Jedi order... everything Luke should have fixed but Disney fucked that up.
The mace windu character is the only one I did NOT like in this series.
Mace isn't a character so much as a plot device. I stand by my feeling of the last 20 years that fans who love Mace Windu don't actually love the character. They just love Sam Jackson as a Jedi.
The point of the Prequels was that Yoda's Jedi Order was flawed and had strayed from the Will of the Force by serving corrupt politicians.
It had failed under Yoda's leadership becoming detached from everyday people. They had become arrogant elitists sitting in their temple while people suffered around them.
All of that is embodied in Mace Windu.
When Qui Gon Jin comes to the Council - and this is a Jedi master so powerful he could be on the council - and tells them the Sith have returned the council outright denies this.
Mace even says "I don't think the Sith could have returned without us knowing." Note the emphasis on "I" being him and the Council.
Mace personifies Yoda's Jedi Order. It's rigid, lacks compassion, and above all arrogant.
It takes the actual death of Qui Gon to convince the council it's a Sith Lord.
Even the prophecy states only the Chosen One could bring balance to the Force and defeat the Sith.
So what does Mace do? Leave the chosen one behind and goes to face Palpatine. Mace was dead the moment he made that decision. The only thing that needed to be worked out were the details.
For all his skill and power, Mace was an idiot.

One of the greatest Star Wars characters of all time? Please. Mace isn't even top 10 let alone top 20. Mace was a very effective plot device to show how the Jedi had failed to use a key reason why Anakin falls to the Dark Side, but as an actual character himself he's quite thin.

I feel constrained to add that the Council as a whole, too, embodied foolishness of the highest order. When Qui-gon's death finally convinced them that the Sith had returned, nay, were always there, they should have been extra cautious, and therefore more watchful of the Chosen One, Anakin. Instead, they spurn him, rebuff him, and essentially insult him. The Jedi had it coming for them. The younglings did not deserve to die, and the tale of Anakin's fall to the dark side is deeply depressing, but the Jedi Order as it stood certainly deserved its decease.

No, as seen in the movies he is a vain and arrogant hypocrite. At the most crucial moment, when all his boasting of his skill finally pays off, with the ultimate threat cornered and himself ready to strike like a snake on a mouse, Mace Windu and begins to gloat. He feels he is in control of the situation. Moments later he is proven wrong, and then he has the audacity to tell Anakin to do his job for him despite having done nothing but talk down about the young Jedi Knight.
He’s always been the prime example of “Hubris” poisoning the ideals of the order.

They happen, in fact, to be very good. It is unfortunate that the prequel-detesting types choose to overlook a good story, and to instead feel affronted more than they should, at the only very occasional ropey dialogue, some of which is in fact an exercise in sensible choice by George Lucas. I do not for a moment imagine, for instance, that many young men come across as any better than Anakin did in Attack of the Clones, while on their first date, contrary to their grand delusions of being the perfectly confident swashbucklers who 'won the girl' in one go. Perhaps, he reminds them of their own past selves which they yearn desperately to forget.
