So many walls!! Should you be scared of Sonoma Raceway?

- There's nothing like going to a track for the first time. Even if you are experienced, you are always nervous to see what turns catch you off guard. With so many concrete walls around Sonoma Raceway, many feel it's a bit dangerous and choose to stick to other tracks like Thunder Hill or Laguna Seca. In this video I have two days of driving the track with Porsche Club of America Golden Gate Region and spoiler alert - it was a blast!

Nice video! What a fun weekend - great to meet you and get to have some fun laps out together! And I totally agree with you on keeping traction/stability control on. Modern Porsche calibration is good enough that it really doesn't slow you down much at all and provides some level of safety net - at least from getting more oversteer than you would want. Looking forward to the next one!
I did see some wiggles in the video on exits for you and Gabriel.
Gonna do Sonoma for the first time in the ATS-V this Monday. As an amateur myself, this video made me a lot more comfortable

Such a fun track! All the concrete walls are definitely a little intimidating when you’re new to tracking
I recently attended a rack day at Sonoma with NASA at which 4 cars wrecked rather badly; out of a field of perhaps 120 or 150.
Three tips on driving Sonoma safely:
1. Do not try to "save it" in the S's (T8, 8a). If you get the car out of shape here, get on the brakes, haul it in and live to fight another day. Guys trying to save it here and over correcting is where most of the really bad accidents happen at this track. (and they can be Bad!)
2. Respect the braking zone to turn 10. This is obvious to most guys. Just be cautious with how much you try to get away with here.
3. Do not get creative with the Carousel (T6). Choose a safe braking zone, point it to the apex and keep the car balanced,. Overcooking the entrance and then lifting is how cars find the wall here . Particularly 911's . If you want to get aggressive with the exit, at least you have a lot of runoff.
This is a fantastic track that every intermediate level and above driver should experience. Just approach it with respect.

Looks like the internal GPS logging is similar to a phone. Can't quite keep up with any of the turns, especially not the hairpins. Bummer about that, cause everything else in terms of integration looks great. Thanks for sharing your Sonoma experience.
The gps in this video was from the GoPro. It was much better from the Porsche app. You can see that in action in my Laguna Seca video. Supposedly the antenna in the car is 10hz but I’m not convinced yet.
How are the Falken’s holding up? Did four full track days on the stock PSC2’s and just got the same size Falkens with Apex VS5-RS’s. I’ll be trying them out for the first time at Big Willow end of Feb. Nervous but excited too. Thanks for your content!
So far I feel like they are holding up better. A few autox's and 17 sessions at the track (425 track miles) and they steel feel pretty fresh to me!

Thanks! Just sharing what I leaned. Sport Chrono - because it doesn’t do much much of anything useful. The clock wasn’t that important for me to option for looks.
Thanks for sharing your experience! Have you changed the wing and little items in the front for max downforce? Do you feel more aero grip?
Yup I made a video about that too. I can’t say I feel a difference because I’ve never driven it at the track in the less downforce setting. I trust Porsche engineered it to be effective though

@@danby89 the Porsche app is compatible most GT or sport chrono equipped cars. However on the 718 navigation is the key to having it. 981 had to have sport chrono
@@JetFuelOnly I have a 981s with Sport Chrono, but there's no Android Auto/Carplay support on the PCM which is what makes me think it may not be supported but I'll look into it
What sim are you using on that iMac?
I run Windows on Parallels. Playing on Assetto Corsa. Sonoma is an add on.
Oh and when I had that iMac it was Intel based so I booted right to Windows for games. Now my Apple Silicon MacBook Pro I just use parallels.
@@JetFuelOnly Does it run smoothly enough on parallels? I don't want to build a dedicated gaming rig but my main computer is a 14" Apple Silicon MBP
Yes it does! I run pro which allows more memory use but I think I remember running it smooth on the lesser trial edition.
