I thank you for acknowledging what you're learning from us Elvis fans. I'll add that I'm learning from you as well (and I go back to the beginning as a teenager when he came into our world & changed it forever). Your sensitivity to the nuances of his & his group's performances & his personality is so enjoyable. You seem to "get him" without knowing all the details of his life that us devoted fans have learned from a lifetime of watching & reading. I'm really enjoying your reactions.

So much of the Elvis enigma, especially of 70s Elvis, is full of his 'king things': the soaring operatic vocals, big sound, explosive energy, erotic beauty, commanding stage presence, epic power ballads, and so on. But it is when one listens to Elvis' quiet, meditative songs, it becomes clear why he is truly transcendental. If you want more, do check out I'll Remember you from the same concert. Or his understated Piano songs It's Still Here, I'll Take you Home Again Kathleen, I'll be True ( do listen to the undubbed versions on the Elvis Back In Nashville set, as the overdubs in 70s masters were something of a travesty many times, thanks to RCA and Felton). Or Danny Boy and For Ol Time's Sake ( the new Elvis Memphis set). There are just so many of these underrated, quiet meditations even in the otherwise Vegasy 70s, that shows how he was a master of restraint as well.
All the versions I have mentioned are available on UA-cam. In General, listening to undubbed masters of 1970s opens one's ears to the beauty of his 70s voice: the released masters were often cluttered and had not too subtle arrangements. Elvis At Stax, From Elvis In Nashville are also excellent for the undubbed masters.

Hi Mike, been watching your reactions on ELVIS
And love the way you communicate to your audience. I'VE watched this concert over and over and it is one of the first to go to over thirty country's. There is footage of Elvis talking about what songs he will be picking to sing.. ELVIS is very expressive in his music.. Just comming out from his divorce and choosing certain songs I believe had alot of truth to where he was at in his soul... like ..WHAT NOW MY LOVE..This time it's a Mountain...many more as you watch this concert. HE REPLACED HIS WEDDING RING WITH A LARGE HORSESHOE DIAMOND RING, AS A YOUNG MAN HE ALWAYS HAD A SMALL HORSESHOE RING .. IN EARLY FIFTIES.....PEOPLE TRY TO FIGURE HIM OUT IF HE SINGING ABOUT HOW HE FEELS OR A CERTAIN SOMEONE.I SAY LETS JUST ENJOY WHAT HE GAVE US.. HE WAS TREATED SO UNFAIRLY BY ALOT OF ARTIST ,THE INDUSTRY, THEY SAY HE WASN'T COUNTRY, HE WASN'T ROCK ECT... THERE SO MUCH FOOTAGE OUT THERE BUT ITS BEING HELD BACK. OUR GREAT BASKETBALL PLAYER SHAQUEL O'NEIL INVEST IN DEAD PEOPLES MIRGENDISE. GOOGLE IT PLEASE. I SAY TO SHAQUEL PLAY BALL.. IF YOU TOOK TIME TO READ THIS, I THANK YOU. GOD SPEED💙💙💙

Hi Mike! I so enjoy your reactions. As said by others-you are picking up on all the nuances that make Elvis a great performer and communicator. I think Elvis related to these songs of loneliness-from his singing Old Shep as a 10 year old, to his last performances-they resonated with him. He may have felt this loneliness due to being a twin without his twin. Whatever drew him to these kind of songs his performances, and the beauty of them is ironically because he did not see himself as a lone performer--he always wanted to sing in a group with others. His great appreciation for his fellow musicians and what they and the audience create together is in juxtaposition to the song. Elvis was an example of the great tension that always exists between the individual and the community-this is not to be at odds but rather as Elvis demonstrates in harmony-making the individual and the community greater than they could be because of the interaction, interdependence, and collaboration. God is teaching us something through him.

The amazing thing about Elvis is his ability to deliver a song intimately to both the audience and the viewer as if he was only singing to them. The great storytellers of the music world (Johnny Cash comes to mind) had this in their locker as well. The difference with Elvis was he had the vocal power and range when needed and so could sing across many genres of music brilliantly. This Hank Williams track being a case in point. Elvis`s vibrato is legendary for its width and musicality, it gives a warmth and richness that many have tried but few have equaled. Great reaction well done.

I watched this back in '73. I remember to this day thinking how great Elvis looked and believing he would be around for decades. Ironically, this was the last time he looked this good. This gives us an idea of how Elvis could have aged gracefully into his 40s and 50s if he had taken a different course in life.
-Amazing how Elvis could effortlessly go from rock to country to gospel (as he did in this special), do them brilliantly and be totally different in each genre.
    Who else could do that?

You are so right I have been a fan so long the other fans of Elvis connect in so many ways. When my husband and I went to Graceland and met so many people that are still friends today. He feels it all in fact he chose songs for lyrics often. You see that in the song "Memories" he did in the 68 comeback where he sits with the audience. He hated loss and when his mother died when he was in the Army he never got over it. She was his life. Thanks great reaction.

The music filled his heart and soul. My understanding is that he chose every song for this concert .The moment he started to sing this beautiful heart wrenching song I did what I do so often when he sings....I cried. I try not to but it just happens.
Listening to you break down each song or performance helps many of us appreciate the intricacies of each experience in ways we might not have realized before...thank you so much Mike for enriching our special memories of him.

When Elvis sings this song he turns it to a magnificent melancholy masterpiece that haunts and thrills you to the very core of your being and sends shivers down your spine. I don't know how else to describe it but I totally love it!!! I could actually see and even hear shivers going through Elvis as he was singing - that is just how intense his passion and emotions are in this performance and well this is how he makes every song he sings his own!!!! Elvis is just out of this world!! Only Elvis!!! Thank you so much for your reactions - for a novice you sure go into the very depth of each performance with much wisdom and understanding!!

Hi Mike, here is an interesting comment from Elvis' step brother Billy "One day I walked into the den, Elvis was sitting there by himself, he was listening to a song on a record player... I asked, what's up Elvis??? He said, not much... Just "living with a song"... I said, what??? He smiled, then said... That's what I call it, when I'm thinking about doing a song... I listen to it for several hours, and arrange it in my head, the way I hear it... "

Great reaction, as always. Unlike (I think) all musical groups, Elvis has his backup singers not behind him, but to his left, perpendicular to him. That's why you'll see him, almost always, singing and facing that way. It seems to me that this is his way of seeking support and approval, and even joking with some of them. ¡Saludos desde Chile!

It's a fascinating story about his early years. It's gives you another whole new perspective on his life. Thank you Mike for sharing another great performance...

This song puts me in mind of so many things. You always knew how he was feeling. In any given moment. Despite his ability to play to the crowd, he could not hide his soul because he was connected. TO US!!!
There won’t be another any time soon, if ever. I am not a believer. But I listen to Elvis gospel daily. I LOVED that he was a true believer. Never wavered. It’s easier to hear from someone who means it. Who gets comfort from it and can convey that. Thats special. Doesn’t change my stance, but gives me comfort that it gave Elvis comfort. He was, and is, a part of us and will live after us. Not to mention , his voice can make you stop in your tacks. Either to sing or to marvel. Been doing it for 60+ years. He regularly travels with me and daily does chores with me. I’ll miss him until I die. After that, whatever, but he was a chosen individual. We’ve only seen a few in our lifetimes and he, among all, stands high above. It just IS.

I've said this1,000 x's before & I'll say it 1,000 x's again: no one put into a song the feeling, the emotion that this man did -- no matter the type of song, genre, upbeat, etc. 3 of his songs that I've listened to twice but do not listen to anymore -- this is one, the others are In The Ghetto & The Sound of Your Cry -- they have become too heart wrenching for me & I just don't want to be hurting & crying anymore. When you have nothing to do in your spare time you may want to compare Elvis' What Now My Love to Sinatra & then Sonny & Cher. WOW! is all I can say. I have to say Cher's voice sounded very good. I'll email screenshots so you will get the correct ones. Thx so much.

I follow alot of reactors, but after hearing your reactions to Elvis I have come to learn that most of them are just their opinions of what they react to.Im sure that most of your followers are in their70's 80's and yes, some 90's. And we appreciate your true input of Elvis. Most of us understand everything you articulate but can't put into words how we feel. This song or any other song he sang had nothing with shamanism literally or figuratively.
His treatment of this song was faithful to the original by Hank Williams. In the early 1960s Elvis did "Your Cheating Heart." It was pleasant, but not inspiring. Dean Martin did a peerless version of it. Jody Miller did it well too.
B.J. Thomas in the mid 60s did ISLICC and nailed it.
