Middle pickup is vastly underrated, for sure. My next custom guitar will be an axe with humbucker bridge and middle pickups, with the middle pickup moved slightly up toward neck. But in a Strat with a hotter than standard pickup compliment, the middle pickup has a tone for solos that's unmatched. Smooth, singing, super melodic tone. Works great with heavy overdrive.

In an article I read about why the Les Paul Jr sounds so good it was mentioned that the part that people forget is that there is less wired circuit to cause the tone to be hampered in the way that a guitar's tone can be when there is more than 1 pickup wired up in the guitar. The bridge pickup on most Strats I've come across never really grabbed me unless the owner had be very judicious in picking out the pickups for each position so that each position could stand on its own merits sonically.

It could just be down to the kind of finish your guitar has. Something like Polyurethane will keep a guitar looking as good as new a lot longer than one with a Nitrocellulose finish and is much less susceptible to damage. If you want a guitar to look old and beat up, you'll want to get one with a Nitro finish and play the hell out of it.

I modified my strat, by removing one tone pot, with master tone and master volume, moved volume down to the second hole, put a push-push switch that when on, with the selector on position 1, connects neck and bridge pickups, and in position 2 connects all 3 pickups. Do you want to hear a perfect funky tone? Neck and bridge pickups together on a strat.

As an almost intermediate, I‘m now on the way exploring multiple different wiring options and combinations on guitars. I like to work on guitars too, to understand better in depth how it's working beside getting better tone and playability.
Next I intent to explore the possibilities with just one pickup, one volume one tone only. I think then I will learn better the influence of picking place, pick angle, pick attack, in combination with the two pots.

While being a single coil the middle pickups offers a lot of the sonic caracteristic people usually search in the bridge position of HSS configuration.
The sound has a nice amplitude, is full of mid, there is still a lot of attack. There is a lot of contrast between the strat three pickups. One could clearly go through lot of songs jumping only from the bridge to the middle or from the middle to the neck.
I think it is over looked because of its position on the pickups switch. In the heat of a solo, it is pretty tough to jump from the mid to bridge (or the neck) and back to the mid in a flip of the hand.
So biomecanics is likely a reason why it is left aside, has it is left aside, players find more practical to have bigger sounding bridge pickups that bridge the toanl gap between neck and the (a litte to britlle) vanilla strat bridge pickup.
I think it could be adressed this way:
Put the bridge and neck on a 3 or 5 swith and have a push-push swith on the volume that allow to go from whatever position is selected on the swith to the middle pickups on its own. That way you can execute safely while you play.
Going further away from strat, for people playing with healthey amount of distortion all the time and sticking to humbucker, I wonder if they would be served better by a middle pickup than a neck pickup.
It might be even truer once you throw in low tuning.

On 4th January 1987 I bought a brand new '57 re-issue made in Japan strat, but the serial number showed it was made in 1986, obviously as I purchased it in week 1 of that year. I still have it, and a few years ago, I gave it a service and decided to not use any of the electrics except for the bridge pickup attached directly to the output socket. I also screwed the pickup directly to the guitar body and the jack socket directly to the body without the pick guard. I had it in that configuration for a few years. It is now back to its original self. You have inspired me to try the other pickups on their own. Thank you Sir.

All I use is the middle pickup on my Strat. My Strat is very rare. It’s a special edition from the early 90s. It’s a 60s reissue made from solid quitted maple. I’m now getting afraid to bring it out because it’s mint condition. Only 250 made. So I’m planning on making a Strat with just one middle pickup that I’m not bothered by bringing out of the house. This video just confirms my choice. I’m going for it.

the middle pickup. i think is underrated by many guitar players. when i play my strat i love the sound options the 3 single coild give me. the middle pickup i use when i strum open chords like on an acoustic guitar and in no other position it sound and feel "natural". when i play surf rock lead guitar, on a strat the mid PU sound best for my ears.
i think the most people use the mid PU in combination with neck or bridge PU for the "inbeetween" positions.
the mid PU alone as single coil seem to "overseen" a bit. so they oversee a bit the power of this PU. only the stratocaster and guitars with strat-inspired 3 PU setup got the sound option, so a sound u can not create with the most gibson style guitars or a tele or jazzmaster.
there is a reason why the famous nashville tele got a middle PU ;)
this video i like a lot. and i am more use my volumen and tone potis now, most time i used it at 10. sure i used my vol poti but now i try to use it more often and not got the gain in mind, now i try to focus more on sound. when i roll back the volumen the tone change and this is something very special/magical for me, i can not understand people make the treble bleed mod in their stratocasters. ^^
    great video tomo!

My bridge and neck are dead so I have been forced to fall in love with the middle pick up. It is very touch sensitive. The beauty of the middle pickup is that picking in different areas gives different tones. Closer to the neck is one and closer to the bridge is another and moving the pick between these positions are lots of different tones.

I've made a strat with the three singles to a three pickup (on) configuration. The way i did this was to wire the neck and bridge in a Telecaster configuration. The middle goes to tone and from tone direct to the jack socket, the mid pickup is then permanent on, So in pos 1. it is bridge, mid pos 2. Three pickups on, pos 3 mid neck. All three pups goes to master volume, and remember only mid goes to tone as the "spice pup" I do mostly use pos 2. with all three pickups on, and i don't bother with the other positions, I can use my regular strats for that. Due to the higher resistance pos 1-3 is mostly for the lead parts. With your five band eq. (also called the right hand) you have a wide range of diversity from three pickups. The resistance is really high with three pups on. so do not expect a lot of overdrive or distortion, Just expect a good tone.

Well what kind of electric guitar are we talking about ? Is it single coil pickups or humbuckers ? Imo don't try to mess too much with the guitar knobs at first, have everything on 10 in your guitar, and try sculpting the EQ from the amp. Start with all of the EQ off or at halfway, then add/subtract things little by little accordingly. Reverb you don't want too much but you don't want a dry sound either, just enough to make your tone "big", have a slight slapback. Use your ears! There's no panacea you just have to sit down with your gear, mess with it and find a tone you like. Also maybe do some research on reddit to find people with similar gear you might get specific tips from them!

if the pickup is lower down then you can raise it up to gain more volume with the screws either side of the pickup. If the pickup is raised and volume still sounds rubbish, I would take a note of the wiring that its using to each pot then wire the new pickup exactly the same way, if the problem still occurs then the wiring is the issue.

Since I installed Eric Johnson pickups in my '86 Japanese Squire, I'm attracted to the middle pickup. Saw somewhere that having one pickup increases the attack and lengthens sustain, makes sense with less magnets pulling on the strings, invisible mutes. If you can have a Sustainiac influence the string to keep vibrating with varying magnets, a static magnet will influence the string into one position.

I use a .0022 tone cap (yes .0022 not .022), that way my tone is very usable from 10-0, no load tone pot. Lindy Fralin vintage tele pickups and Wolfetone cub middle strat pickup. I like to be able to do almost everything on 1 or 2 guitars. I mostly play funk and soul music, a little reggae and blues too. Fender twin is my favorite amp. Last year, I saw Chris Duarte do a clinic, and he mentioned that the middle is his main position, occasionally switching to the neck or bridge for more bass or bite, and it got me totally rethinking how I approach a Strat.
Whenever I see people talk about using a dummy pickup in the middle or lowering it so they don't hit it with the pick, I just shake my head.

I have a guitar that has the body of a Gibson SG but Fender Stratocaster neck it’s a guitar I got during around 1992 the guitar was from the 1960s so it kinda worked with a grunge or retro sound it only had a middle body pickup on it and it was a lipstick style pickup you see on telecaster or Danelectro ! I never seen a guitar like it before name of the guitar on the headstock is King or something like that , I have the guitar in storage so I haven’t seen it in years !

Hey, I see this is a two year old post.
I ran in to your channel, looking at different takes on pick up hight.
You are a lot of fun, Thank You.
As it happens, I am a keep it simple Tele guy.
Leo did a thing, inadvertent or not, he parked neck pick ups under a harmonic node.
By now you must have run in to this.
Strike a 5th frett harmonic and change pick ups. Bang the neck is dead.
Some G&Ls have the neck nudged back to the bridge. This helps, but the amplitude of the string is still small over the pick up poles.
On a tele this is frustrating.
    Enter the Strat middle!
My Strats are wired, with the middle straight out, except for volume.
I use the mid more and more.
One thing you gain with just the one pick up is less over all gause.
So, :. less string damping, and better harmonic sympathy in general.
Recently a revelation set my on my ear.
Quicky adding a rash of electric guitars, I made note that some had better 3rd frett harmonic responce.
Looking for a least common denomenator, it turned out to be pick up hight.
Wow, I thought things where in order.
Now, one by one, there is a bent to lower pick ups, including #1's
You put a lot in this vid.
I have no effects. But love the half a tube of extra gain in Fender Reverb amps.
BTW your PRO R is a treasure.
Another admission, of mine, is a near addiction to reverb. Good thing I have a Champ to keep me honest!
I hope the last two years have been kind.
    Be well. Chris
