When a burglar enters your house but instead of stealing anything, he's tempted and plays the SEGA 32X instead. Serious note though, I'm quite intrigued to see where this goes!
Five years already?? Whoa. Looks like we'll all be overdue for v2.3 pretty soon then. The timing of every other v1.x and v2.x release was between 3-6 years, with 5 years being the average. I'm excited to see what 2025 will bring, both from STJr, and you, SSNTails! Edit: Speaking of birthdays, it just occurred to me that SRB2's 30th birthday is now 3 short years away. Are you excited? Because, speaking as somebody who's been following this project since 1998, I certainly am.
My goodness, it's been five years since I started playing SRB2- Also that OST sounds absolutely legendary !! Can't wait to hear it in HQ if and when it gets released !! :DDDD
its crazy how ive seen srb2 gameplay years ago, but have never actually knew the name of it, nor have i played it up until last year. im quite interested in learning more about its backstory (even if i know enough already) and playing the older versions. the 2.2 update is absolutely phenomenal, so i have no idea what new and exciting content can be added in 2.3!
A new version of srb2 has been released every 5 years since 2.0, so I assumed 2.3 would be released by the end of this year. but I guess 2.3 is still a long way off, but I can get by with srb32x this year
You're not wrong. SRB2 would face insurmountable challenges on the 32X due to its dual 23 MHz SH-2 processors, limited 2 MB of RAM, and lack of advanced graphical capabilities, making a true port impossible without removing features like slopes, dynamic physics, and complex level geometry. On the other hand, even on the Saturn, despite its dual 28.6 MHz SH-2 processors, 4 MB of RAM, and specialized VDP1/VDP2 rendering chips, a port would still require rewriting the renderer to support the Saturn's quad-based architecture, reducing level complexity and asset sizes, and optimizing game logic to fully utilize the parallel processing capabilities of the hardware. That said, porting a potato-fied SRB2 to the 32X might actually be easier than the Saturn, ironically, as demonstrated by the insane optimizations seen in the Doom 32X Resurrection's project (check it out if you're not familiar). As it stands, the 32X's simpler architecture, and extensive homebrew tools and community, is orders of magnitudes more accessible than the Saturn dev world. Doesn't mean we're going to see a SRB2 any time soon, or ever, on either hardware.
I think you should wait before stating what can and can't be done on the 32X. You might be surprised. The Saturn has 2 MB, not the 32X. The 32X has 2 Mb (i.e. 256 KB). And despite limitations, clever programming can make a lot of magic happen. Not trying to oversell capabilities, just saying you don't know what you don't yet know!
My question about this is if this is actually real, because if it is, i'm going to be playing it STRAIGHT AWAY WHEN IT RELEASES. Also i'd guess the date is Christmas.
hey SSN, will there be modding potential for this port? I'm curious. I've seen that it's possible to mod the console versions of DOOM in a similar manner to the original version, which is why I'm asking.
Which console versions are you talking about? CD32X Fusion? That allows you to load level WADs onto a burned CD. SRB2 would require you to create a modified ROM if you want a stage any bigger than GFZ1. It's doable, and we built the tools to do it, but it's more than just dragging a file into a folder. It would be interesting to see some mods in this version!
@@ssntails I'm no expert - I kind of assumed that since some of Doom's ports are based on the original's code, and by extension might use the WAD format internally, something similar could be going on here 😅 though it makes sense that it wouldn't be nearly as easy as the PC version - 32x games don't have access to the computer's filesystem, for one. I'm glad to hear that there's the potential, though! Thanks for the response!
@dragonick2947 Some of these console ports (including SRB32X) are based on Jaguar Doom, which has a different rendering pipeline and also some different file formats. Both CD32X Fusion and I have also taken liberties on making custom formats of things to maximize the best use of memory and the console hardware. But I'll keep all of this in mind and I think coming up with a 'mod importer' of sorts might be an interesting project.
Was the spring a compromise for performance, or did you just not want to spend an hour creating another pseudo-slope? 😛 This looks amazing. And here I thought the Saturn was the earliest possible target for such a game.

They would definitely bring this

Ooooh. Sounds like we may get unlockable YM2612/SN76489 versions of the OST next major version.

I didn't SRB2 being a 32X since everyone says it's supposed to be a Saturn game
It's not "supposed" to be a Saturn game. It's just more comparable to a Saturn game than a 32X game.

HAPPY BIRTH DAY SRB2 2.2
While trying to see what's happening, I think I saw the layout for the older SRB2. I'm not sure if I saw it correctly though, due to it being blurred.
I can't make out much in terms of gameplay, but it kind of looks like the sloped ground is gone. Is that just not possible to do for a rom hack?
Can't wait to play the on GB300/SF2000!
SRB2 on 32x? NO WAY!
the 32x has sound files or did you manually recreate the thok sound with the sound chip stuff whatever?
Right now it's PWM powered. But the intention is to eventually have a sound driver that will recreate sounds when it makes sense.
And the srb2 is really good just like sonic 2
