I am a wrestler. I noticed that in all the fights I had as a child I never felt like throwing blows as much as getting to a hand-to-hand fight, even though I was much shorter and thinner than other children in elementary and middle school I always noticed that as far as specific strength and particularly in my legs I have always been stronger than the others. I always lost in arm wrestling but I was able to carry far more weight on my back than my peers could, my grip strength was also superior. my physical frame has always been made up of the lower body being much more developed than the upper body, especially my calves. I also had quite long arms and a squat torso like a brick or a log and not like a triangle. My back has also always been particularly strong. I have been practicing Judo since the tender age of 7 and I have always enjoyed it, I did many competitions at the regional level. Then I dropped out for a transfer and began training in powerlifting and parkour and developed a very robust and compact but at the same time athletic physical shape. This year at the age of 16 I started practicing Sambo and Brazilian Jiu jitsu seriously at a competitive level, I feel great, I am very enthusiastic and my instructors were amazed by my skills after barely a month and a half of training specific. They say I have potential and I hope so. In 8 days I have my first official Sambo tournament, I know that the first few times you almost never win, but I hope to beat someone since I will necessarily have to compete with adults as I now weigh much more than my peers.
@@dub_h7900 more likely, ego. he showed iron chin against a heavy hitter like Paulo Costa. it's his ego tryna invite his opponent to hit him that leads to him getting ktfo.
There’s great fighters with every body type. It’s just knowing how to use your physical gifts, and minimize your weaknesses. Generally speaking though shorter stockier guys tend to prefer boxing and wrestling. Whereas longer guys prefer kicking and bjj. There’s exceptions though
One thing to note about great strikers: They also usually have insane reflexes, which also end up being their downfall once they start aging. The most obvious example is Silva and the infamous clip of him getting caught while trying to lean back.
Jones is the best example of body-type advantage period. Its like if everyone else were forced to use a sword and only he could use a spear. He definitely is asare of how to use his advantages and has mastery over them. Without this he would be another Gustafson or some other long fighter.
but don't forget he also having a very high fight iq, the best in my opinion. no other fighter has better attacking arsenal than jones. he can attack you using everything. kick, punch, elbow, knee, take down, submission not only decent in doing that but advance level. and dont forget the eye poke
@@Blaze-zt9jz That is largely due to him being able to reach so far wit his elbows and knees. The oblique kick also creates a huge distance. He has a high IQ but his physical advantage allows him to be patient and watchful. He struggles against other big guys. I honestly dont think he would be undefeated without his natural gifts. Still an amazing fighter but also blessed.
He also has a really high arsenal of weapons and a the ability to move very efficiently and minimalistic. I also wouldn't base his success on his long distance. He finished a hell lot of people on the ground were punching distance isn't that important
@@bigmonke2899 thats true its not JUST his reach but his distance control is the basis for his style. It gives him room to act and at the same time frustrate his shorter length opponents. His strongest skill is his wrestling since its what he has practiced the longest but his reach allows him to have the effect of a great striker as well. I don't think he would have the same success if he was your average LHW/HW build. Yesterday I was shook when I saw he was able to grab Gane's wrist while holding his legs down from the back. That is without a doubt freakish reach.
It is beneficial for everyone to be long and lean. The striking advantage is obvious. You can hit guys from farther away, you have the ability to loop punches around defenders blocks from further, you can hit harder at lower weights, and you have your chin further away from your opponents strikes. But to me an even bigger advantage of being long is that you get tremendous leverage for grappling. Even the best grapplers in the world tend to struggle to grapple with long strikers because their length lets them do so much more. You look at guys like Gustafsson, Adesanya,or Wonderboy, who are pure strikers but stopped world class grapplers from getting them down, or even Jon Jones, who was never a world class wrestler, but was able to out grapple everyone in his division because of his incredible length advantage. There is a reason the top guys in almost every division are taller guys who are cutting down to fight at lower weights.
Idk man grapplers have been dominating the sport since it’s entire existence lol the only weight class that benefits being long and lean is middleweight and even then grapplers have dominated that weight class for a long time. There hasn’t been a single pure striker(adesanyas been training with the best bjj artist of all time for 5 years and he’s a black belt) who is a champion but there are several pure grapplers that have been champions such as Brock Lesnar, Daniel Cormier, khabib and Islam, etc. Also saying that Jon jones isn’t a world class wrestler is hilarious lmao he literally competed in one of the highest levels in wrestling. All around the stockier build has dominated the UFC.
@@Boogieman618 fr, a stocky build has always been dominating the game. ONE alien in Jon Jones for being that long and that crazy strong, it’s just him. Guys that has similar physique to Jon always get beat up by body similar to that or DC, Fedor, ect
These are a things of the recent past, in my opinion. Look at Makhachev, du Plessis, Topuria. Jones is a fossil that never fights anymore, so count him out. Pereira exactly fits the mold you described, that I agree with. But Adesanya is one the way down, as are Gustaffson and Wonderboy, hell even Edwards can lose to Muhammad if they ever actually fight again :D around 2016-17, the meta wa slong lanky dudes, but Khabib and DC changed it somewhat. Further back in the day? Fedor Emilianenko, I'll say no more. Almost every single opponent he faced on the way up was taller, lankier and more toned and he smashed them all.
Holy crap! I have never had anyone explain MY style to me better than you did! I did TKD and Karate in my youth, followed by boxing and Muay Thai in my late twenties; I have a 74 inch reach at only 5'9, and I'm very elusive on the feet. But..... I'm also quite short for my weightclass (I compete at welterweight), I have lots of muscle and strength from competing in Olympic Weightlifting for 5 years during my early twenties, and despite not having a wrestling background I have very good blast double and body lock takedowns, as well as good takedown defense (mostly due to strength and natural athleticism). I'm perfectly a "Hybrid" as you called me. I think that's why I always identified with Robert Whitaker and Dustin Poirier the most. Too short and heavy to be a pure striker. Not high enough grappling pedigree to be a good wrestler. Just a jack of all trades Hybrid. I like it.
Jones’ long limbs are what seem to be the best physical advantage. He can move quick on his feet due to the leaner muscle, his tall and long limbs make it harder for fighters to control him on the ground, and the skinnier limbs don’t tire out as quickly. After a few rounds of wrestling, the fighters bodies are full of blood. Heavier arms means more weight to hold up to protect yourself and more weight and torque for effective punches. Those heavy arms work against the fighter who’s exhausted
none of the long limbs fighters are nearly as strong or as quick as he did. When a lanky fighter came on, all you get from them are reach advantage and they’re always athletic inferior to their opponents, that’s not Jon. Jon is strong enough to outwrestled DC in MMA, and nobody does that to DC outside of Jon and Stipe. Jon is an anomaly to lanky guys, so is GSP to a lesser extent
I agree. What type would you put Fedor Emilianenko in? I would love for you to watch his fights and do some content on him. He's one guy that just by simply watching I think he could still hang with today's heavyweights. Super skillful, tough and deceptively athletic. Idk what category he'd fit into here though.
Dude if you could rewind Fedor back to his 2008 self he would doninate the HW division today the same way he did before. He wasnt 10/10 in every aspect but the way he mixed striking power, grappling skill and insane ability to absorb punishment jut has never been seen before or since. Not Ngannou nor DC nor Stipe nor JJ has that level of ability.
Big boys And if fedor had not lost to werdum i would agree with you. But ever since that fight he lost his confidence and started losing to ppl he would NEVER lose to.
I haven't fought since I was probably 10 years old at Tae Kwon Do, but at 32 now, I've been getting more serious about exercise again. It's just treadmill and shadow boxing currently, but the striker physique naturally fits what I wanna build
I’d say the best build are those like Izzy adesanya and Alex Pereira, skinny but buff at the same time, wiry guys. They are slim and their arms are skinny, but they are so powerful that the slimness of their arms compliments the strike, like getting hit with a spear. We need to see more of Alex pereira to know, and observe when he moves up weight, but so far his body type seems extremely adequate when it comes to striking. Of course I don’t know if this comes down solely to his body shape but probably on a more complex level like his muscle type and his muscle fibers, but him and Adesanya are very explosive but also have a lot of endurance, truly best of both worlds.
they're not talking about aesthicly or for bodybuilding. I'd pick jon jone and whittaker. both dont carry to much muscle, and are insanely fast and flexible.
There is no “perfect body type for fighting”. It’s about having perfectly matched style to go with your body type. That’s why “styles make fights” not “body types make fights”. That’s also why there are many champions that have much different body types, because they have the style that matches their body type.
Body type is second to musclefibre type. Whether you have slow or fast twitch fibres, that's what going to determine how you should fight. If you're slow twitch, you are less likely to tire yourself out in extended engagements, whether it be grappling or striking. Fast twitch guys like McGregor should and will try to finish you early, or they will most likely be at a disadvantage, should the fight last too long. Cardio is major factor, sure, but it mostly depends on how much energy you have to expend to fight in your preferred manner, which will ultimately depend on your fibre composition.
I am a bona fide big boy. I wrestled 285 and am 5'8, I am a nikyu in judo and training in kyokushin as well. I had one fight and lost because my opponent did a Brazilian tap after I hit a front face lock and kneed me in the liver after I let go. I ain't making that mistake again.
results point at the likely fact that the best type of body is a wrestler's body. Grapplers > Strikers in MMA & the less rules there are the Grappler just gets stronger in all honesty, lots of dangerous things one can do up close just like when Mike bit that ear, thats grappling range.

I’m 6’1 145 lbs been training at my local MMA gym for around 5 months and I recognize that the best skills for me to learn and drill a bunch on the feet and ground are rangy ones that are best executed if you have length/arm length advantages (ex: push kicks, body kicks, side kicks, roundhouse kicks, Darce/anaconda chokes, guilliotines, get ups from guard/mount, etc)

My opinion is Depends on your style. Longer and Skinny advantages are •Longer reach •easier to land kicks and punches •can manage distance well •can lock up body triangles and triangles in BJJ easier •can do arm chokes like darces and anacondas much easier. •perfect for jabbing. •harder to hit •can ride legs better in grappling Advantages for the big boys are •much heavier wrestlers so the weight distribution is impeccable. •can suffocate the opponent easier when grappling. •more weight behind their punches or slams •they’re more heavy handed so their wrist grips can really wear on you. •flattening you out from the back would be a nightmare. •their side control, scarf hold, crucifix and north south is going to be A1 Really muscular guys are going to have all those advantages of the big boys on top of being more explosive, more athletic and probably a bit more raw strength but less effective at “wet blanketing” in grappling exchanges. However these are general advantages and won’t always determine the outcome of a bout.
At their natural weight without the weight cuts, that's also the healthiest physique. Cardio for the heart health, decent amount of weight training for joints and bone density. Guys like Poatan, Jiri or LHW Jones can be profficient at basically every physical activity.

There’s great fighters with every body type. It’s just knowing how to use your physical gifts, and minimize your weaknesses. Generally speaking though shorter stockier guys tend to prefer boxing and wrestling. Whereas longer guys prefer kicking and bjj. There’s exceptions though
Yes, you are right. Except with one point. It's "There are" when you use plural form and not "There's"
@@fightsmack3140 you’re not helping by pointing that out unless you fully explain the reasoning of your correction
@@Blaze-zt9jz he was losing to Machida in stand up, he used his iq and Wrestling to turn things.

Guys that has similar physique to Jon always get beat up by body similar to that or DC, Fedor, ect
you can say that for any build. "Everyone could benefit from putting on some muscle"

I like it.
The hybrid is the best. Guys like whittaker, volk, Aldo, yan, burns, are my favorite
Id say big boi, hes like a taller cormier build wise
Dude if you could rewind Fedor back to his 2008 self he would doninate the HW division today the same way he did before.

There is no “perfect body type for fighting”. It’s about having perfectly matched style to go with your body type. That’s why “styles make fights” not “body types make fights”. I think the ideal body type is a mix of the hybrid and wrestler build.
And that is why Leon Edward has the most aesthetic physique
Body type is second to musclefibre type. Whether you have slow or fast twitch fibres, that's what going to determine how you should fight. If you're slow twitch, you are less likely to tire yourself out in extended engagements, whether it be grappling or striking. Fast twitch guys like McGregor should and will try to finish you early, or they will most likely be at a disadvantage, should the fight last too long. Cardio is major factor, sure, but it mostly depends on how much energy you have to expend to fight in your preferred manner, which will ultimately depend on your fibre composition.
It’s actually Leon Edwards, for having the most beautiful body on this planet
I am a bona fide big boy. I wrestled 285 and am 5'8, I am a nikyu in judo and training in kyokushin as well. I had one fight and lost because my opponent did a Brazilian tap after I hit a front face lock and kneed me in the liver after I let go. I ain't making that mistake again.

Longer and Skinny advantages are
•Longer reach
•easier to land kicks and punches
•can manage distance well
•can lock up body triangles and triangles in BJJ easier
•can do arm chokes like darces and anacondas much easier.
•perfect for jabbing.
•harder to hit
•can ride legs better in grappling
Advantages for the big boys are
•much heavier wrestlers so the weight distribution is impeccable.
•can suffocate the opponent easier when grappling.
•more weight behind their punches or slams
•they’re more heavy handed so their wrist grips can really wear on you.
•flattening you out from the back would be a nightmare.
•their side control, scarf hold, crucifix and north south is going to be A1
Really muscular guys are going to have all those advantages of the big boys on top of being more explosive, more athletic and probably a bit more raw strength but less effective at “wet blanketing” in grappling exchanges. However these are general advantages and won’t always determine the outcome of a bout.
I'd say that Izzy/Pereira type body, good reach, long limbs for the ground, can carry good muscle.
