Rusty's Pronouns.

In springtime Rusty, the maintenance diesel takes a small train to a small halt. The halt is in a small town and meets up with a branch line from The Fat Controller’s railway. Edward usually pulls the trains here, but one day Rusty found a different engine at the head of the train. “Hullo! my name’s Olver”. “Hello,” replied the diesel. “I’m Rusty”. “Hello, Mr. Rusty sir! It is a pleasure to meet your acquaintance”. Rusty was startled, they hadn’t expected a voice from the end of the train. Oliver smiled, “That’s Toad, my brake van”. Rusty looked back at the toad brake van. “Please don’t refer to me as sir”. “My apologies Mis. Rusty”. “I would prefer that you not refer to me as that either”. “Then what would you prefer me to refer to you as?” “Everyone just refers to me as ‘Rusty’, I don’t quite go by anything else”. “Sorry Toad, it’s time to go”. peeped Olver. “Oh uh goodbye, Rusty. Oh that does feel rather wrong. ” “Goodbye Toad! Oliver!” But as Rusty watched the train leave, they couldn't help but wonder. “what do I want to be referred to as?”
Early the following morning, Rusty set out with the maintenance train. There had been a bad storm that previous night and it had its way with the little line. Rusty had to hurry, the first train would be out soon and Rusty didn’t want it to keck up with them. The wind had blown leaves over a broken piece of track . By the time Rusty noticed the blockage, but it was too late! Rusty came off the rails with a crunch, the coupling between them and the train snapped, and Rusty went rolling down the hill! The maintenance crew ran to the closest station and stopped Peter Sam. They quickly set to work getting Rusty backup. It took a long time to get Rusty up the gradient, but when they did, Peter Sam took them to the works on a flatbed.
Rusty found themself at the works surrounded by workers. One of them was reading a magazine. It had a peculiar flag on it. It was yellow, white, purple, and black. "Excuse me," asked Rusty. "What flag is that?" "It's a magazine". Replied the person. "Yes, but what does that flag mean?" "Oh, it's the non-binary flag". "The non-binary flag?" "Yes, it's a flag for people outside of the gender binary". "The gender binary, what's that? And why do they need a flag?" The person was about to reply when the supervisor walked up. “Rusty, would you like an overhaul? You’ll have a different shape, but it will be easier for maintenance”. “Can I have some time to think about it?” “Of course”. And they walked away. So Rusty thought and thought about it as well as many other things.

Toad had missed his new friend, Rusty. After a while, he thought that Rusty wouldn’t show up again. That was until one day; Toad sat sadly at the platform, when in the far distance he heard a familiar horn. Toad’s face lit up as a rebuilt Rusty pulled into the station. “Hello, Mr.- My apologies; Hello Rusty!” “That’s quite alright, Toad!” “If you don’t mind my asking, do you know what you would like me to refer to you as?” Rusty smiled, “Traveler, Traveler Rusty.”. “Thank you.” “I would also like for you to refer to me with they/them pronouns”. “Excuse my asking, but what are pronouns?” “They are words that we use to refer to people. Like Mr or Mis, or he or she, and they or them; to only name a few.” “Sorry to interrupt you,” said Oliver. “It’s time to go”.
As Rusty watched Toad depart, they knew that not everyone would like them for who they were, but they had a firm friend in Toad.

This is wonderfully handled, and I for one thank you for it. I wish Rusty in the show could have been more, could have been a little representation, but their chance at that passed by. At least the fandom can now take the reins and respect their identity with more meaningful fan-made content.
