Hi Kurt, I've been revisiting your old videos from around 2012-2013. I used to love these to just be transported away into the Japanese mountains and learned so much from them. In the period from 2014-2020 I've lived in Tokyo for about 4 years in total and have been into the mountains myself as well now and then. Found many suzumebachi, huntsman spiders and mukade (kept one as a pet even). Found this video and it made me chuckle how goofy it is but at the same time bad ass. The Japanese mountains are not for people who dislike insects!! Cheers!
Hello GoudaGamer, Thank you for your nice message. I'm so sorry to be so long in responding. Your adventures in the mountains of Japan sound wonderful. Isn't the diverse wildlife there amazing! Thanks again for your message and long support. I hope you have a great day! :-)
That is a big bug indeed. Great video as always. You are a real master of video making. Most people will never be as good as you when it gets to this sort of thing. You are real good whit words and that is important when you make content like this. So keep it up and so on ;D
And I have also been bit by a horse fly, when I was little it bit me on the ankle, it really hurt and the shock made me fall and of course that hurt to :)
I used to collect and study insects throughout Junior and into regular high school. After I went off to technical training school I didn't really have the space for them and had to share rooms with people so I didn't want to disturb them so I stopped. After that I never picked up collecting but I still watch for them and still watch them when I can.
Hi, I'm having a big problem with 1 horsefly. Since 2 day (since 4 July) I don't know, she lives in my backyard around my pool. This insect start to makes me feel crazy. I can't enjoy de pool with my family. It's attacking to my kids to my husband to me. We can't catch her. I'm not allow to let her bites me. So please, what I can do???
Hey Kurt. If you'd like to try an experiment, I'd recommend wearing Zentai in your hikes during peak bug activity. You get full body coverage, and its thin and elastic enough so that not much body heat is trapped. It works for keeping you safe from bed bugs at least.
I would not have the guts to catch one of those, Although I am lucky as to my knowledge we don't have them here in Sweden. Anyway, Great video Kurt, Can't wait to see the horsefly in more detail after you preserve it.
I know, right D: I remember when I was little (like maybe 9 years ago, when I was 10) I got bit by one for the first time at a pool, and I c-r-i-e-d. Could never imagine a fly to bite, let alone that painfully )X
The worst part is, I expect like most flies, their, body shape, compound eyes and nervous system, unlike wasps (which are slow and easy to catch or escape from), allows them to fly with high levels of speed and agility. Oh, and they carry diseases and parasites (lovely). Really wouldn't want to run into any of these.
urg!!! hate those things! i used to get bit left and right from these things when i was a kid swimming at a pool or beach!! i know my son bobby got bit by one this summer on his cheek "face" cheek lol he was not a happy camper!
I dislike horse flies very much. I live across the street from a smaller horse ranch run by a gentleman and his wife. We get a ridiculous amount of horse flies during the summer months, and their bites hurt....I'll be 24 in a couple weeks and have never been stung by a bee btw, but I image that hurts more than a horse fly bite.
That’s a good and interesting question… I wonder why they are attracted to the car. Maybe the temperature or the heat? I’m sorry it took me so long to respond. Thank you for your comment. Have a great day! :-)
I was once on a gravel road in Northern Canada where you had to bring jerry cans as the gas stations were too far apart. I remember I lost most of the gas on the ground as I was getting eaten alive by these bastards trying to put gas in the car.
It's like a bunch of gangsters hanging all over your vehicle. They're like: C'mon guy. We won't bite you. Come on out. lol I think it's cool how you don't kill them.
Best way to kill the buggers is once they land on you, you wait for their head to dip down and thats when you quickly smash them. These things are annoying and hurt a lot. I do what I can for bees and beneficials but deer flies and horseflies are worse than having coyotes running around the land.
As an ethical vegetarian (soon to be vegan), I don't mind you harm the lower creatures / parasitic species, such as: humans (particularly, of the hunt'n & fish'n variety, and butchers), horse flies, mosquitoes, moths. As long as you abstain from harming Higher Animals - that is, all the remaining species - I don't mind.
I hate horseflys so much, I have something to me that they must like. No summer for me. If I go outside into the forrest or to the riverside I am literally ambushed by them. I hide all summer long from horseflys...
They certainly are attracted to anything that emits warm and carbon dioxide. And hotter object that emits more carbon dioxide is more attractive than colder object that emits less CO2. Noticed that many times. Most likely this behavior help them navigate to horses and cattle which is larger meal and easier to obtain instead of humans and house pets. They are attracted to gasoline lawnmower and car more than me. Which is quite helpful sometimes :) Why he catched that flying crap is beyond me. Too little meat from one fly IMHO. He should catch a bucket of them.

We have a few horse flies up north in Minnesota. They can get really annoying when you are out swimming, trying to bite your head.
They are all over Missouri. At least we don't have the "serial killer" aggressive mosquitos like MN does.
he's too powerfull, I bet he could dodge bullets with that little jogging dance
Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts. I’m sorry it took me so long to respond. Have a wonderful day! :-)
This was hysterical to watch while eating my dinner. :-)
How long is the "life time" of these insects???
A few days maybe sorry I'm 6 years late.
This is one of the most outrageous and strange things I've watched on UA-cam
How did they not bite you when you were outside and how did you catch it?
How dont you get bit
That light colored one with skii goggles on the inside is one too
Thank you for sharing your observation
Easy Off works well. After that, go for the fly swatter - but these things are faster than normal flies.
8:15 , oh my god, that a this horsefly (male) is a fast like a fly.
It certainly is a fast fly. Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts. I'm sorry it took me so long to respond to your comment. :-)
@@softypapa No problem )
I love your channel Kurt... very cool & interesting.... Those giant horse flies are HUGE...
We actually have horse flies in Sweden they are called broms(ar).
This is the best video on the internet lmaoo
Thank you for watching. I'm glad you found the video interesting. I'm sorry to be so late in responding. Have a great day! :-)

We get pretty big ones here in australia, but in the south were I live they are rarer, I have seen some big ones though.
And I have also been bit by a horse fly, when I was little it bit me on the ankle, it really hurt and the shock made me fall and of course that hurt to :)

To be honest, I hate horseflies. I used to live up in the mountains and everywhere I go there’s horseflies that’s why I hate them ever since.
I’m not very fond of them either. I share your concern. Thanks for leaving the comment! 😊
Oh, I live in Gothenburg, I haven't seen any around where I live, Maybe I need to get out more :i
softypapa, how do u have over 13,000 subscribers on ur channel?
Oh we have them. If you visit the archipelago outside of Stockholm you will find alot of them.

“Wildlife explorer” 😂😂😂😂
why didnt you keep it? :(
You could tell it was huge just by seeing it through the bottom of the bag. I'd say he was 2 1/2" - 3" long? That's one the bats love to catch.
This guy is funny he's making baby laugh!
so when i go outside are those the bugs that make that loud sound
Yes you maybe figured it out in 6 years but they make the sound
That was an entertaining vid! loved when you we're "running" around the car made me laugh! XD
you should get a nice collection going, still have that nice dead giant hornet you found? if not get another!
I would not have the guts to catch one of those, Although I am lucky as to my knowledge we don't have them here in Sweden. Anyway, Great video Kurt, Can't wait to see the horsefly in more detail after you preserve it.
lol i love the little kid inside you reminds me of myself..so awesome
HorseFlyNet® has nets to block out HorseFlies in run=in-sheds and also makes a Croup Cover to cover behind the saddle for trail riding.
Haha this video is great Kurt, very entertaining. I'm not sure I would be game enough to let a bunch of horseflies into my car ~ Tim.
You. Are. Awesome.
I have a good insect collection from last years college class.
Never get a horsefly though.
Wich animal or insect is the "natural predator"?
Looks like a scene from the movie "The Birds"
It sure does. Thank you for watching and commenting. I'm sorry for my super long delay in response. Have a great weekend! :-)
thankfully i havent seen any so far here in phoenix , az. im pretty sure they are out the though.
kurt your funny.
I am happy to hear that the horsefly is going to a better place, lol. To science and all it's wonders!
I'd love to get advice on how to repel them... #phobia
Good stuff keep up the good work
I once got a horsefly stuck between my glasses and face. I got bit, needless to say.
That's what video games are for.
Good catch, In asia there are huge horse fly species, I once caught n release a big one in China., it looks like a freaking cicada.
They are probably attracted to the engine's heat.
+redvision350 Good point! I think you may be right.
lol really good job man, I really like your videos, this one was particularly funny when you would jog around the car lol, keep it up :D
Still have a cyanide jar?
Tack.
the small one's will still hurt when they bite you.
I'm sure they will hurt. Thank you for sharing your observation. I'm sorry to be so late in responding. :-)
I didn't know that they have a nasty bite...
I know, right D:

That video was so fun
We have those in our stables, they bite a horse so hard that it will start bucking..
Haha, Kurts face when he comes back with a horsefly he caught :D
Wow, allowing bugs to get in your car must take some balls to do. Cool.

This is why i like house flies
That is a bee/hornet/horse fly all right

They see heat. That's how they are attracted. That and your carbon dioxide. They are quite literally out for blood. Your blood lol

He must have a tiny dick if he can mount it.

I laughed pretty hard, when you gave them a blood offering(your arm).
It's so big...
