  • I am solo logging on my timber land using a Farmi 501 tractor winch on a Massey Ferguson MF 30 MF 34 tractor. I am using it to yard a large incense cedar log out of a canyon.
    This video is part 2. You can watch part one here:
    • Pulling Large Incense ...
    Part 3:
    • Pt. 3 Solo Logging Loa...
    This cedar tree came down last winter in a snow storm. I am salvaging it to put it on my Woodmizer LT 15 sawmill to cut into lumber.

    I enjoy doing this type of logging and it's nice to watch you doing it to. I used to do a lot 😂residential logging and all I had was a 3/4 ton Chevy4x4 pick up. To do this with. And it's incredible to see how much strength we can get from using blocks and cables and chains. Thanks for sharing your videos with us and I am looking forward to seeing your other videos too.

    3/8"s cable?
    You must have a couple hundred ft of cable on your winch ?
    That backhoe/ yarder is lit, 😂😂
    Love the views you used in this video.
    A sharp chainsaw is a safe chain saw, thanks for this video one of my favorites.
    No kidding, lots to learn if your watching closely 🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡👌🌲💪💪💪

      7/16 cable. It’s of course more durable than the 3/8. It’s also a nice size to work with compared to 3/8 or 1/2. I believe it is 165 feet. I have one that is 220 feet that I can put on if I really need to stretch out. It fills the drum up to the limit so I like to have the 165 on there most of the time when I don’t need the length.

      Was it the length of the log making it dig into the earth like that?
      Sorry for all the questions ⁉️
      I find myself watching these over a few times, you better be get me some new ones lol

    Great Watching this system. I would suggest a banana style skid plate of steel, with spikes into tree and incorporated into the cable system to slide trees up the hills. A plate with stabilizer skis so it won’t roll. Use your engineering skills to come up with a design if you would like to try it and a way to jack up the tree to get the skid plate under it. Just saying.

      I have seen people do things like that with car hoods. I have never tried anything like that myself but it’s a provably good idea. Thanks for the comment.

    That is one big cedar log, never heard of that type of cedar before. that would be nice to have that type and that big around here and most of all that straight, working solo makes you come up with all kinds of new creative ideals...lol you did a great job getting that up onto the road. thanks for sharing and take care will be waiting to see some of that on the mill.

      It only grows in some areas on the west coast. It’s common here but not real well known in much of the country. It’s usually outshined by more common western red cedar and your eastern red cedar. Thanks for watching and I always appreciate your comments.

    Now I see what you are doing with your cuts when lopping off those 8 foot sections...at first I thought you were missing your bottom cut when doing the top cut but same idea as proper pruning of a branch.

    • @WilsonForestLands
      @WilsonForestLands  Рік тому

      I try to cut them in a way that minimizes tear out and cracking. There was a couple times my top cut and bottom cut didn’t lineup. That was just me being clumsy.

      I didn’t think most people wanted to watch a two hour long video so I did a bit of editing and made it 12 minutes. A 2 hour job turns into more like a half day job when doing all the video. I enjoy doing it so it’s all worth it. Thanks Dave.

      @@WilsonForestLands This question has been bugging me for days; is Incest Cedar the result you get when two Cedars of the same family cross-pollinate?

    • @WilsonForestLands
      @WilsonForestLands  Рік тому

      Actually it’s even worse than that. As with every other tree we call a cedar in North America, this one is also not a true cedar. But this one is unique in that it is in its own genus. It’s the only organism that exists in the Calocedrus genus. So not only is it a result of trees pollinating within its own family, within that it can only pollinate with trees in its own genus. But I wouldn’t hold that against it. Sometimes if that’s all you can do, you just have to do what you have to do.

    beauty tree should make some great boards , we don't have cedar here in Northeastern BC Canada few hours south before ya get into em. think we call this type Aromatic Cedar great for building hope chest etc, think we have red and yellow cedar on the coast

    • @WilsonForestLands
      @WilsonForestLands  Рік тому +1

      We don’t have red or Alaska here. We have to go an hour north or west to get to them. Incense is all we have here. I am not familiar at all with NE BC. I just assume it would be a beautiful place because it is BC.

    You definitely know more than I do on this so I'm just wondering here .... before cutting the first 8 feet off what if you had of rapped the cable around the log 4 or 5 times to get the log to roll sideways while pulling to get the butt of the log to roll out and up out of the gouge? ...I seen the log rolling towards the end like you did that....cheers

    • @WilsonForestLands
      @WilsonForestLands  Рік тому +1

      That may have worked but I just decided to take some weight off it. I also wasn’t wanting to pull it to the side when it was that low to avoid making another rut in the hillside. Although I ended up doing it anyway later on. Hard to know which would have been the better way, the way you asked about or the way I did it. It’s a good suggestion and would have worth trying that way too.
