One of my all time favorite directors. When you watch a Michael Mann movie, you know you're watching a Michael Mann movie. I love the way he does action (incredibly loud and realistic gunshots), the way he writes characters, and the ethereal beauty of the more quiet moments and music of his films, like Neil looking out at the sea in Heat. The man is a genius. I even liked Blackhat, which was a bomb that a lot of people hated.
It's a shame that people always tend to bring up 'Heat' only to celebrate that time De Niro and Pacino acted together. Heat is an extraordinary movie and it deserves more love from cinephiles and youtube dissection channels. It is one of the greatest crime movies ever made in my opinion.
Think the De Niro and Pacino thing is the initially magnet that gets folk to watch it .The story, look ,feel and sound of the film are the thing that make you sit back and say 'Holy shit ....now that was a movie! ' As the credits roll at the end . It'll be a sad sad day when Michael Mann stops making movies .
There is one thing in Mann's creations, you don't just watch them, you live them. Whenever, I find my mind stirring vehemently, I tend to watch his films, especially Heat and Collateral. Mann can be considered as a philosopher in a way, a cynic, an existentialist, an uncompromising nihilist, ideas that I always love.
I watched Thief recently, the bluray version with new color grade, and it felt like this movie was made yesterday. Mann really has an eye for Good shots and visuals.
I've always found the relationship between the sea and characters in Mann's films was one of visually juxtaposing the inner turmoil the characters face. His characters are often tortured in some way - volatile internally or externally or both - so they always seem to find themselves drawn to sea. Living on it, gazing into it, etc.
Thank you, sir. I'm glad you liked it, it's not perfect but I just love his work and Thief is indeed a glassic, it's raw and dogmatic in its own way. Thank you so much for watching as it means a lot
I recently saw Thief for the first time and its one of or maybe even the most beautiful film film i have ever seen. The colors, the camera work and the surroundings are just perfect. I would really recommend this movie to anybody that has a special place for movies in their heart.
Great video. I love all the films of Michael Mann but "Heat" is his masterpiece and "Thief" is not very far behind. Just a little correction - in the scene between Pacino and DeNiro, Pacino's line (3:40) is "I DON'T KNOW HOW TO DO ANYTHING ELSE" instead of "I DON'T HAVE TO DO ANYTHING ELSE".
Thanks for the link, I didn't know that. The film is still almost entirely shot in Chicago so I wouldn't call it a LA film, especially since LA is not part of the story. The website you linked to doesn't list it as a LA film: www.itsfilmedthere.com/p/los-angeles-movies.html but lists it as a Chicago film: www.itsfilmedthere.com/p/list-of-chicago-movies.html which makes sense. But still well done on an overall solid video.
Re: Framing. There's an early scene in "Thief" where Frank (Caan) sits down on a parking lot guard rail to read a letter from his imprisoned mentor, Okra. Frank is on the right side of the frame. The left side of the frame is empty, implying that his mentor is a missing but integral part of Frank.
Thank you for making this. I'm one of the slouches who wasn't aware he was responsible for these cinematic masterpieces. Wonderful documentary on one of the greatest crime writers of our time.
Thank you so much for watching, I am really grateful for the feedback. Your words are very kind and inspiring. I will have a look at your work as well.
I've always thought that he's one of the greatest, if not the greatest living director, and I'm remembering that now. But you left out " The Last of the Mohicans" which has one of the best final sequences in contemporary film where Wes Studi ( Magua ) tries to get Jodhi May to do what he wants, and she chooses to fall from the cliff to her death far below. -- Michael McDonagh on Michael Mann
Thank you so much, I am overwhelmed by the many great fellow cinema lovers who have actually watched this. Michael Mann is a filmmaker who deserves more exposure. Thank you so much for watching. You're a saint :)
All the things from this to that, Tells me everything I need to know , Michael Mann, is a genius, And his films just tick boxes. 1.Kubrick, 2.Spielberg, 3.Richard Donner 4, Lucas, 5. Mann
Hey ! wonderful analysis, never thought of it regarding man and nature but now I see why im so attached to his films and why ive always felt mystique about all his work which is experienced completed everytime (style and realism)... Authentency and nature.. the relationship between man and nature can´t be more simple.. no wonder his name is Micheal Mann!
Hi Dennis, thank you so much for watching. Every time someone like you watches and understands a video like this then I really want to make more. You're awesome, thanks a lot for giving it a watch.
@@MichaelCouvaras Incredible analysis which I think fits perfectly to Micheal Mann films..yes do it you clearly have flair for it..I think people in the world of films forget or aren´t aware of what kind of completed art Micheal Mann has created..the most talented artists and completed work are usually what is underated and is only existing in memory, or in one´s conscience or lack thereof. But I like the humble mystique about that too...
@@MichaelCouvaras yeah...Similar Aesthetic...kind of dull colors..another one in the same tone is David Fincher...i think. ALi is a pretty solid film though..even for Micheal Mann.
Terrific video perfectly encapsulates the existential philosophies that drive the characters in his movies. What's the ambient music used during most of the video? Incredibly atmospheric!
Love the style of your video Michael. Would it be too much to ask if you can please put the name of all the songs used on this video? I want to listen all of it. If someone else knows this, please let me know. =)
Hey! Did you by any chance make a video about the beachfront existentialism of miami vice? I was trying so hard to find it on youtube, but it looks like it has been removed.
What is the movie at 7:43 when your talking about German expressionist film? I want to say Metropolis, but I'm not sure as I haven't seen it in like a decade.
Thanks for watching, I don't go in order but I would say the ones that I look at are Public Enemies, Heat, Manhunter, Thief and Collateral, also The Insider. For the montages there's some frames from Ali and Last of The Mohicans, Blackhat and Miami Vice.

Couldn't agree more, it is such a dense film. Love it.
Always find something new whenever I watch it.

I'm reading Heat 2 written by Mann and it may be the best crime novel I've ever read and I have read a lot
One other thing that I find unmistakable and unforgettable in M.Manns movies is
The music!..
It transports you!

Terrific analysis of a phenomenal film makers art, Michael Mann is arguably the greatest director of our time.

na, It's Michael Hanake.
music at the end gave me chills, great video I'm a big fan of neo-noir type films and Mann did a splendid job with Thief, Manhunter and Collateral

Ending the video with New Dawn Fades... just brilliant. Great work sir
Thanks, love that track.
Everyone including me loved Dune and Arrival. Arrival more for me. But Michael Mann is definitely my number 1
Great video. Just one quibble. I'm pretty sure Pacino's line in the diner scene is, "I don't know how to do anything else."
Yup, I noticed that too.
Great video. I love all the films of Michael Mann but "Heat" is his masterpiece and "Thief" is not very far behind.

Yes for sure, this I very much noticed later. Brilliant film!
Beautiful Video Mann is my favorite filmmaker I try so much to figure out the color corrections he does in certain films like collateral and heat

Great vedio dude according to me blackhat is also very underrated
Pretty good, but I want "The Cinema of Michael Mann".
8:22 - Thief was filmed and takes place in Chicago, not Los Angeles.

Fantastic work! Thank you.

Cosmic sand - 9h00

Does anyone know the name of the music genres (ambient synthwave-ish..) of mann's films?
What is the movie at 7:43 when your talking about German expressionist film? I want to say Metropolis, but I'm not sure as I haven't seen it in like a decade.
You are correct. It is indeed Fritz Lang's 1927 Metropolis.
3:40 - the actual line is "I dont know how to do anything else". The caption is incorrect.
What song is that Mann intro song?
What's the song starting from 0:50? I don't think it's in the description.
Sorry for the late response. Jonn Serrie-Stratos
But it's not that, Stratos sounds totally different. ua-cam.com/video/jyi9EzlFpFQ/v-deo.html
