wtf
Weird trick huh? Better than throwing money down the tube 'reballing' that garbage
Luke Miani no, this is soo wrong. In so, soo many ways (´ー`)
It’s got nothing to do with the balls.
The actual GPU die is done. The cores inside or completely destroyed. The only reason why this works is because the GPU bumps move back.
It’s only temporary because when the bumps expand again in a week they completely crack again and causes even more damage.
Not even reballing is a proper fix. The proper fix is to de-solder the chip off and throw it away, buy another chip and reattach a new GPU chip on.
The actual GPU is cooked, not the balls.
I know its not the solder balls, that's what I said in the video. I said 'a lot of people think its the solder balls, but its not'
Luke Miani yup, your right. It’s not the balls but ehh, it’s dodgy. You can still damage your board :p
I’d recommend you see some of rossmann’s videos. He’s quite good in explaining these things :p
Also thank you for responding to my comment :D
Doesn't seem he's suggesting that this is the best way to fix it, but rather a cheap hack that works for some people... I mean at this point the benefit of a free repair far outweighs the risk of damage to the logic board considering it's not worth the time or cost of properly repairing a 2007/8 MacBook Pro that is 10 years old at the time of the video.
I’m still amazed... It REALLY WORKS! Now i can use my MBPro A1260 again. Thank you so much, Luke. 🙏🏻
Louis Rossman will flip his shit if he sees this lol
he saw it
He did lol
i have an early 2008 /A1260. was unaware of heating in this method, What i have done is to freeze it. I put mine into a zip lock bag and place it in to my deep freezer for about an hour afterwards it boots and operates just fine. Temps run from 115 to 190 F with fan speed control APP. When the computer is cooled down to around 120 F and rebooted at Ambient temperature it won't reboot.Powers on with no chime or screen display I have to freeze it again. What do you think is happening? Some are having success with heat shocking but i am having success with freezing it.
This was the most ridiculous thing I have ever read and didn't believe it for a second. It has been months since my 2007 MacBook Pro bit the dust and I was disgusted. This actually worked. And heed the warning. I temporarily fixed it and I was able to get the last two year HR Block tax files off it before it started in with the GPU reoccuring. But my assumption that it was a software issue just made an a** out of me and the MacBook. Thanks Luke!
I was just about to buy a spare motherboard from internet then I watched your video. I have the skill to open the whole mac till the last screw. I have a dremel gas soldering device to heat the GPU area. I heated until I couldn't touch. After reassembly the Mac Early 2008 worked! I had it under my bed laying for 6-7 years! Thanks a lot. It feels great.
Thanks! it works! I didn't have bootloop on my mac, but I started on "Startup Manager" and did all the "recipe".
I just did this and it worked for my 2008 MacBook which stopped turning on in 2018 and had since been dormant for over a year!! THANK YOU Luke ~
I'm so amazed! I scored one of these MacBook Pros with this exact issue for €5 an was able to fix it with this trick! Thanks👍
Awesome, awesome, awesome! I reballed with new GPU chipset in 2014, now the Macbook still become unstable and the graphic card go crazy again. Today, I tested your controversial method and .. it works, simply! Wow! Literally, boring a computer is a bit crazy as well as dangerous, but it worked for me! Love you!
The old xbox 360 red ring of death method
MrLa Duck nostalgia
MrLa Duck I know. Brings back memories.
I’ll be honest I had my doubts but this worked perfectly for me, thanks!
Wow, this is absolutely amazing and a life saver! Thank you so much, Luke. I tried this method with my 2007 laptop today. Thank you!!! I was skeptical about this, but TavHD got this solution from you (and linked this vid to his), and so after watching both of your videos I gave it a try and IT WORKED! I was so relieved and copied my files to a thumb drive right away 🙂. I'll get a fan as your video directed. Some day my 2007 laptop will fail to boot, but that day was not today. Thank you again!! Can you share some day how you came up with this amazing idea? Thank you again, and Happy New Year!
I appreciate the help immensely! what speed or temperature would you recommend I set the Rpms of the fan to? or is there an application that you would recommend I use?
Use macs fan control
well my screen failed and it didn't boot up anymore. So I took it apart, shoved the Logic Board in the oven and baked it for 8 minutes at crispy 180C. After that, I let it cool down, put it back together et voila, it worked. Let's see for how long. And don't forget to remove that ugly spunk that apple calls thermal paste and put on something decent before you do anything. Now it runs Sierra on an SSD, looking forward to upgrade to high Sierra
TheMetroRetro these laptops aren't upgradable to sierra officially
"officially" but can put it easily on them, follow the instructions by a guy called dosdude1 and download his Sierra patcher or high Sierra patcher and it'll work without any issues even with apfs
TheMetroRetro did you need a USB flash drive or anything?? Sounds interesting
Yes you need the High Sierra installer app. downloaded from a supported Mac or some darker sources on the internet and a 8GB or more USB Stick then go on this website dosdude1.com/highsierra/ and read the instructions carefully. Dosdude1 also has a YT channel, so go and check it out. It's really not science I'm sure you can do it
TheMetroRetro do you think it's possible on a white MacBook from the same era? Model A1181 core2duo
It worked!! Awesome. Thanks Luke. I did as per the instructions except I first left the MBP horizontally for like 50 minutes and then on its side for another 50 minutes. Let it cooled down and after 30 minutes I turned it on. Thanks again!
cool*
MacBook Pro Early 2008 - worked for me! I actually had two issues. I ended up fixing the video issue but I was still getting kernel panics. I ended up having a bad memory stick. Posting the results using my newly restored MacBook Pro!
Lovely content! Keep it up!
Thank you so much, this actually worked!
I had mid 2010 MacBook Pro with faulty iegpu what can I do with this! Help me out please
Dont forget to menti0on that some Lenovo T61's and T61p's had this issue with there Dedicated graphics chip (NVS 140M and Quadro FX 570M) but the issue was different, instead of the GPU die separating from the gpu's PCB the BGA solder balls would micro fracture causing the GPU to fail and thus would cause artifacts to appear on the screen and it just not booting all together, my T61p is a champ it is the revised model with a different solder ball matereal but its survived 91C temps and overclocking becaue the Quadro chips where actually binned very well, but still a good and informative video
Thank you for your help !
really it's working100% :)
but I would like to know which temperature is the best for it !
I mean for the GPU (hot or gold is good for it ).
I actually have a 2008 MacBook Pro that amazingly hasn’t experienced the GPU failure yet, despite even having a broken left fan. How it’s still running I don’t understand, but I’m glad it’s still running even now. Also I can confirm it isn’t the solder being the issue because my unit tends to get well up to 100 degrees C and it still keeps running. Thankfully I managed to repaste the heat sink and GPU unit when I replaced the fan. Though I’m thankful for this video because if it ever does fail, I can do this to revive it. Also I heard the part about setting the fans to run at a decent speed, so I’ll do that to keep my machine cool as much as possible.
Loc,3
I have one of this and when a turn on I don't hear the boot sound, but I can hear the HDD working. Keyboard lights and batteries are ok. When I connect it to another MPB (via FireWire Target Mode), the HDD is there, with system working, etc. Finally, when I plug it to an external monitor, both screens stays black. Do you think this method can help me resurrect it, even (apparently) without the bootloop?
Thanks man!
I'm surprised this doesn't have as many as dislikes as the "Best MacBook Pro deal ever" video you put out! Im saying this because this is actually only a temporary fix (although, I must say that it's better than putting a blow-dryer to it like most do). I've literally spent months trying to work up the courage to replace a graphics card myself. Since I'm having trouble finding "how to" videos, I've spent the past month looking for a how-to video or site that shows you specifically step-by-step to replace the CPU from an i5 to an i7, but I still need another graphics card for that to function correctly. A video from you with the concerns I'm having that I addressed previously would be fuckin epic!
Vani Jay why will you replace the i5 it has less heat also you can hire someone from Upwork to do it cheap. A professional so you don’t pay to much or risk messing up your MacBook
Following the threads here, I was curious about mcdradus (11 months back) putting his into the freezer for a bit. I made another attempt with the temporary fix which again surprised me when it worked. But when the graphics were losing their grip again I decided to pop the macbook in the refridgerator for about 20 - 30 minutes. It has let me get more files and pictures off the macbook pro for almost an hour. I even got an OS X upgrade to take. Thanks again Luke. You are a wild man.
Does it still work?
Yes. I put it in the Fridge for a half hour and I can access what I need. How to solve the overheating is still a problem but that's a battle for another day. Every since they did those software upgrades it is just slow. But getting the files I needed off of it was worth while. It still boggles my mind that it worked. I always thought it was a bad update from Apple and I never realized it was just their crap quality that matches what I read here. All the googling in the world and I found a solution here. Go figure.
I've had my trusty 2007 Macbook Pro for 2 years and luckily it hasn't failed yet. (Knock on wood) I believe that mine had the proper apple repair done on it before the warranty period ended. I might switch to a pre-retina unibody soon but for now my 2007 is working great.
the 2007 could be patched to macOS Catalina, unfortunately the CPU does not support SSE4.1.
Upgrades are dirt cheap, but you need somebody with soldering skills!
It worked perfectly for my MacBook Pro 2006
How tf can you still use osx 10.7?
you can get high sirria on these im pretty sure
You can't, MBP's from 2006 use 32-bit Core Duo processors and the latest OS version compatible is OS X Snow Leopard (10.6). Great machines still haha
Feryjhon are they socketed or are that soldered? I think you can replace a socketed Core Duo with a 64bit cpu. Then with some coaxing, you can put El Capitan on one of those.
Is it a late 2006? I have a similar problem, sometimes it will freeze at a blue or grey screen and only restart in safe mode
I shut it down and it didn't turn back on again... I'm gonna try again to heat shock it but if it turns back on, what can I do so it will just turn on / off like normal? Thank You!
I'm super puzzled because you say that this method for a MBP that's stuck in a boot loo 🤔
Mine DOES boot and gets to the desktop, but as soon as I open any app or window, the graphics chip goes nuts and ends in a crash.
I wrapped the laptop in a few towels and I left it for about 1 hour.I left it to cool down for a while.I putted back te battery in ,tried to start it but it did not start. My MacBook Pro does start up but won’t make a boot chime or display anything.I’m so desperate to start it but I can’t seem to do it.If you will reply to my it would be very helpful. Please reply.
Hi Luke. I have this MBP and one month ago my laptop failed to wake up after closing it. It doesn't boot up at all. Black screen (doesnt seem to have any backlighting at all) but you can hear it's running . There´s no chime when I press the on button. I tried detaching the battery and pressing the power button for like 10 seconds to no avail. The sleep light is on. My question is if you think this problem is related to the graphics issue or something else? I didn't experienced any graphics related problem at all. Thanks for any input you can give me.
it could be.
Without having a manual fan control app do you think that the system is overusing the fans? Surely the system can control its own temperature and knows what the best speed to run the fans and at what temperature to get the internals to?
no it basically does not use them enough, therefore it cooks itself!
Literally every MacBook does this!
I have some problems on a 2009 macbook pro 17 inch with a Nvidia GeeForce 9400M It randomly turns off and can take about 30 attempts to turn on, randomly quitting during system boot
Good video! 👍🏻
I did what you did. lol!! It works. Thank you so much. Working beautifully.
Works on MPB early 2008, but i have to repeat it on each boot. Mine dowsnt have screews so i just unplug fans for 5 minutes then boot then plug them back in. Is a pain, but as long as i dont turn it off i can be on for weeks with out a problem.
Oh my word. It worked! The laptop has been sitting in a cupboard for about 10 years.
I got a 2008 MBP for $15 at goodwill in very good shape and it would boot with no video and this fixed my issue for know and I also plan to repaste both the gpu and cpu and replace the hard drive with a ssd. I plan to make this MBP look good as new once again.
Dont forget patching to macOS Catalina!

Do you think you could make a video on fixing the 2011 GPU issue?
If I can find a way to fix it I will. Currently as I don't have one I can't try out some fixes (I did play around with disabling the GPU but I didn't get it to work on the machine I had at the time). Theoretically, you could try this method to see if it works, the principles should be the same or similar.
I was actually able to figure out a viable solution!!
UA-cam is blocking my link though so imgur com / a / DZSUd (just remove the spaces)
Follow the steps after "It should now work." :)
I disabled my dedicated GPU with the archlinux fix and now not even gfxcardstatus can enable dedicated graphics and all my issues are gone
What the best fan speed to set medium ?
Funcionó!!! Muchas gracias
Hello, still works?
It worked on my MacBook 2007 17 inch. Now it's not working, same problem. Will try heating up again.
how can i drive the GPU to enable the video card work normal ?
will this work on 17" macbook pro?
dose it work with late 2008 macbook unabody
Please make video on MacPro 2012 GPU defect
Does this apply to the late 2008 unibody MacBook Pro?
No. That model no longer uses the same GPU.
i did this once.. worked but later failed and there i am again doing the same thing again. and mine just glitches when its on the desktop... sooo.
I very much like, is good video. Have much happy day.
A funny thing happend here doing this: I had not used the macbook for 3 years having exactly the same problem, wrapped it in towels and it started right away 😂. But when i wobble the screen it goes black but when I start up again it works again untill I tilt the screen. Any suggestions?
Update: left it under the towel and it is fixed :)
If a 2007 MacBook Pro doesn't turn on at all... like black screen but white power light... does this fix work?
In order to get the method to work you'll need to heat up the computer but getting it stuck in a boot loop with no ventilation. If your computers fans turn on you may be able to achieve this, but if there is no sign of life other than the power light, the computer won't overheat enough to shock the GPU into working again
Thank you so much Luke!
I tryed with my macbook pro 17 2007 model and it worked.
But after when shutdown it to charge it's not getting switched on from then
Plse help me solve my problem
Do I require termal paste to make it work or anything else to be done
*Famous Louis Rossmann spoke - lucky him!*
I just got a 15 inch macbook pro from 2007. Trying this now lol . hope it works. :)
one time i put it upside down it fell from my bunk bed but i was there to minimize the fall
took mine apart and just reapplied thermal past and put some sealent around the gpu die to adhere it to the wafer better
2:47: "PCIe Lane Width: X8"... It's supposed to be X16. Loss of PCIe lanes indicates that the GPU is failing again. I've done GPU chip replacements on these many times, installing the revised version of the chip (G84-603-A2). Took some pictures during the process of one: dosdude1.com/pics/mbp08gpureplacement2/
Here's an observation: I've noticed that on most of my Apple laptops with dedicated graphics the lane width displays as x8 (On my 2012, 2013 retina, and 2016). I wonder if that's due to the graphics switching effecting what's displayed in system information? Also, we all thank you for your work with Sierra and High Sierra patchers! Any update on possible Mojave patcher (ik its hard because of the Metal GPU requirement)?
Yeah, 2010 and later dual-GPU MBPs are supposed to only have an X8 PCIe lane width. 2009 (9600M GT) and older are supposed to have an X16 PCIe lane width. Mojave patching is quite difficult, mainly due to the video card issues. Once (if) we get that figured out, then I'll be able to create a patch.
omg the second you said heatshock my mbp almost booted but failed 5 seconds later
The Unibody MacBook Late 2008 doesnt have this Problem, right?
Correct, that model uses a newer 9600M GT chip
Luke Miani the one i Just bought got an 9400m so its also fine i think
I cooked mine for 2 hours without the fans connected. Did the trick perfectly. No idea how long it’ll last but I’ll most likely replace the thermal paste in the meantime
What fan control app and setting did you use?
I use SMC fan controller and I set the RPM to about 4200 for normal use like web browsing
Luke Miani thanks!! 😀

@Luke Miani, My girls Macbook Pro is DEAD. I mean dead. Won't boot at all. I think a heatgun to the GPU might solve the problem but I doubt it. I think the motherboard is fried entirely. It might be the power socket. Any suggestions as to where to begin? Just so you know, when I use a working power cable, there are no lights what so ever. No fans spin and there is no POST or kernal panic. Pretty dead, right? I ask because I want to fix it and use it myself.
"I want to fix it and use it myself" XD
Well since she got a quad core i7 Macbook Pro with Retina screen recently and the old Macbook Pro is dead to her, why not? Plus my Hackintosh isn't working 100% and I want to learn Swift. Gawd.

hi i'm Bram, i live at Indonesia. my problem would be getting the new battery, we can't get macbook 2008 battery in here, i've tried to see amazon but Indonesian people couldn't get it for me. It's maybe best time to upgrade new macbook but i just can afford it. If you had suggestion for me, it would be a great pleasure. Tks for great video.
First rule of thumb, gausa pake product apple kalo lu kgk bisa afford repair ama upgrade. Ikhlasin ae lah.
This is very similar to the Xbox 360 towel trick. It’ll work for a while, then brick itself again.
thumbsUP!
This method worked for me... impossible to know if it's permanent or temporary (fingers crossed). I followed the instructions given, making certain to block the exhaust vents and letting it bake upside down for about 90 minutes. Then I allowed it cool for several hours, et violá! P.S. Why does Louis Rossmann
say "WTF"?
Bob Dobbs your laptop still working 5 months later?
it worked! 2007 mbp still working again, haven't had that feeling since i wrapped my xbox in a bunch of towels.
any tips? didn’t work for me :(
@@Firefoxsimp lol great user name! Actually it stopped working quickly after, I recommend taking apart and using a heat gun to melt the solder between motherboard and graphics card, there is good tutorial how to but it's more difficult than the towel trick
@@LSGTSTRM link? also could i use a hair dryer as i don’t have a heat gun
El Cap is outdated, patch this. Also... once fixed, check the PCI bus width in system information... if it's x16 it's entirely fixed, if not then you should heat it further.
Yours shows x8 looks like, which is still wrong!
you can use dossdude1s Macbook pro killer
My issue is different. My late 2008 MacBook(not pro) crashed constantly with every upgrade since Yosemite. Installed Mountain Lion, it didn't crash but was very slow. I decided to install Linux Mint 19.2 Cinnamon and now it runs better than it did when it was new. Sorry Apple, you make it so older hardware doesn't work with your OS. I'm done with Apple. I was told it was a hardware issue. Nope. It's amazing how well Linux runs it this 11 year old MacBook.
This didn't work for mine :(
There's a big difference between a graphics chip that needs to be reflowed and "completely destroys the computer".
Change the GPU. That's why i'm not going for the team Macbook on this one.
It a shame that most laptops that are plague by this garbage Nvidia 8000m series gpu are forever bound to it, Like my XPS M1530 that's in good condition but, there is not a model without the 8000m series gpu. If I do get one of these just for my collection because I really like this design of this macbook pro, I would probs just get a A1150 it may be bound to 32bit only, and OSX snow leopard but it comes with the mobility ATI x1600, yes there are cases that they did fail but not as bad as that garbage. And the parts are way way cheaper for it.
Why not just hit the GPU with a heat gun? OR run some super intensive crap on it with only 2GB of RAM if it can boot? Minecraft sure does heat my 2008 iMac to 90 degrees celsius unless I run the fans at near max. Or just throwing the motherboard into the oven for a few minutes.
does this actually work!!?
in theory yes
I’ve done it a few years ago and it worked for me 👍
apple should still fix this issue for all us poor sods with a expensive brick !!! going to try this will let you know if it works or burns my house down either way ill let you know...... !!!!!!!!!
From Russia with love bro.
Mine was WAYY worse. The GPU is not fucked but some component is keeping it from turning on,for example if you turn mine on the fans will go 100% speed and no video or bong.I have tried reseting Pram and stuff but nothing.Going to try this method if it works im going to have 2 working macbooks and will be happy as fuck to have my old beast up and running again.
try pulling ram and testing each stick
Cortex thats a dead motherboard. Thats why your fans are running at full rpm, as the motherboard can no longer tell the fans to slow down, let alone boot.
I know Xinless... But hey at least i got a new one! a late 2008 one!
Cortex Yeah, that’s a definite improvement. I replaced mine with a mid 2009 macbook , as I need the FireWire port for fast communication with external storage devices and my PowerPC fleet.

Swapping logic boards is really basic, man. What you've done here is an extremely ghetto reflow.
Genius bar from the streets brother 🤣
Also that damages all the other components in the machine.
Not really because the non-leaded solder melts at a much higher point than what it takes to reflow the gpu. And if you're at this point you really don't have much to loose on that motherboard.
They CAN and DO run hot enough to melt the solder on the GPU!
Heating with hair dryers and heat guns CAN fix this for a spell
Also disconnection the fans and running UP SIDE DOWN for 45 minutes to one hour can do the trick
