"I loved you.. best I could" - Edward Teach
After finishing season 2 of our flag means death, I knew, for various reasons I had to edit a tribute/solo video with Izzy. His character growth and arc has been one of my favourites during this season, and I lovee the themes that came through especially with the last ep, to do with belonging, family, etc on the pirate ship. This really came through with the final scenes especially and I loved how his relationship with Ed comes full circle.
This video is a study of how his toxic obsession with Edward or "Blackbeard" led to a toxic relationship where he was pining for everything he had hoped Blackbeard to be, but was not. Throughout the video we see the parts of Blackbeard that he loves (his vicious and destructive side), which in turn also damages/hurts izzy as well. However seeing him as "Ed" with Stede hurts him mentally. So, the song I chose by Mitski is about sticking to a relationship that is failing in every single way - similar to how Izzy can't win mentally or physically with his love for Blackbeard.
Even though I included the scenes in the final ep, I had to end it on a happier note - "I loved you, best I could" - to imply that Blackbeard loving Izzy in the way that Izzy wanted was only going to destroy him further.
Very depressing and angsty, just how I like it :)
So happy I got to use my all time favourite Mitski song with such a great character too!

Still absolutely adore how this turned out. It came together so seamlessly and perfectly. I love how you depicted their relationship and how you showed their toxicity and how it wasn't good for either of them (mostly Izzy of course). Izzy really did have great growth and development through the two seasons and you really did nail it so perfectly. This is a wonderful tribute video for him, the song is perfect, your scene choices are perfect, it's amazing. Again, love it so much.

I'm not sure I can say anything more than my initial thoughts during the beta-tests but I'll try...
I love the pacing throughout; it's the one thing I think you nailed perfectly! & I like the coloring overall. There's a part of me that things you could've kept using the 4by3 aspect for flashbacks post-death scene but it's a nitpick at best. The mood of the video works exceptionally well with the song. & it all captures Izzy's relationship with Ed so well (the good & the bad). It's a wonderful tribute to Izzy. I don't know what else to add here... 😅
