Well, even kindergarteners who cannot yet read can often write their own names :D So maybe he is just flexing he knows how to write it. But I would not be surprised if he really knew how to read and write.

he is the absolut worst and I love him. He personafies the closeted homophob, peer pressure, toxic masculinity, toxic heroworship . . . but he is also often the only one with a working brain cell activly preventing that ship from going down and has to compensate for the utter irresponsability and insanity, that is ed . . . and to be honest everyone else

Izzy is hands down my favorite character after Ed and Stede. He's such a spiteful, toxic little shit, and yet such a deeply tragic and compelling character. All I want for him in s2 is for someone, preferrably Lucius, to kiss him on the mouth and finally exorcise all that internalized homophobia that's possessing him.

Came here out of curiosity after seeing someone describe Izzy's voice as "the actor chews his lines like a menacing guinea pig, like hearing Kermit the frog trying to strangle his own puppeteer, like someone has trapped a vengeful spirit in a balloon and is allowing it to speak prophecy but only in short, squeaky bursts" and I think I'm going to have to watch this show now

i mean, knowing con, i don't think he was ashamed at all
God, he's such an awful shit to everyone, but there are some great humanizing moments for him. I love the one where he is begging for Ed to listen to him when they have Stede in the firing line. O'Neil didn't need to go that hard, but you can hear him just that raw emotion in his voice. I really get the feeling that he is a character that doesn't handle change well and he's been dealing with Blackbeard's erratic behaviour for a long time and can't understand why this is so different from any other time Blackbeard has gone off on a whim.
There really are a lot of humanizing moments for him, and they didn't have to give him those. Any other show would have made him just a two dimensional toxic person, but OFMD (and Con's performance) really let us into his experience of all this in a way that makes him weirdly relatable.
The writing choices give me hope that we may get a canonical Izzy Hands redemption arc, instead him just getting killed off or marooned or something.
A year later and after the season 2 trailer, I have a feeling we may be getting some kind of character progression for him 👀. Izzy and Stede are my favorites. And I would love to see Izzy have some character growth considering all those humanizing moments. I think the finale was a very close start tbh; this could be me fanon-izing him, but I feel like we got a very brief look into him showing a little care towards Blackbeard. Would love to see their relationship explored yk
Season 2 confirms that Blackbeard was more of a toxic partner and in turn Izzy fed that toxicity with his own, and then couldn't see why Ed was so different around Stede, but he recognized that Stede was actually good for Ed, but that fear of stagnation kept him trying to end Ed and Stede's affiliation. After Ed returns to his old persona, and is even more toxic than previously, Izzy reckons with the fact that Stede was truly the best thing for him, and tries to bring Stede's softness and consideration into his duties as Blackbeard's right hand. Seeing Izzy able to move on and bloom after Ed and Stede reunite was incredible.
"Best of Izzy Hands", and it's basically every scene he has on the show 🤣 Best character from OFMD and it was difficult to choose.
Everyone wants Lucius to kiss him, but I actually don't. I want a new character to come along and be like Ed with Stede and just absolutely fall in love with him for how he is. And then I want Izzy to realize what it's like to actually be loved and appreciated. ( And you know maybe he should get some therapy along the way)
Well.... Lucius would do a good job, but it would be very difficult to convince Izzy to let him draw... You know what I mean

His line in season 2, where he states that Stede is the mist amazing person he ever met because he has none of the skills a pirate would ever need but is somehow still alive is quite possibly one of the best scenes in television history. His deadpan delivery is just....❤

I unironcally identify with him. Why, you may ask? Basically i went through the similar things as him (i loved someone who loved a person that i hated). And I have a similar toxic personality (I'm agressive, I'm a bitch, I'm an idiot, etc) but i manage to control those impulses. He's me but as a pirate.
I can identify with the part of him that is endlessly frustraited with everyone elses bullshit. Being the only one halfway sensible while everyone around you acts like high as hell muppets and you get the backlash for trying to keep things working and those idiots alive . . .

Doesn't actually have one in the show. People make presumptions that he didn't come from a poor family or whatever and that he's not queer coded, despite the fact that the crew and cast have quite clearly stated he is, just because they don't like him personally.
If you really want to find out, I would just ask Con or David Jenkins directly.
