Who else didn't Know there was a knockout in this sport?
I had no idea it was this cold. Yo this shit is actually crazy.
Come to think about it, it’s something more brutal than a football tackle. And they do it with no protective gear
There isn't, at least it isn't the goal for winning, only touching down with anything but the soles of your feet or leaving the ring is a way to lose. No closed fist hitting. The first one on the left is Hakuho, the most successful Yokozuna of all time, he could take just about anyone, Mongolian warrior. His dad was a champion in Mongolia as well. He is also at 2:25.
its against the rules to punch people but you can slap them
Then these nigga’s slaps are carrying fucking jets behind them to knock some one out of these absolute unit’s size.
About what it feels like to have a refrigerator hit you at 60mph
This is the pinnacle of UA-cam comments.

A fridge covered in a thick layer of jello maybe...
Southern Scythe The broad I used to date was the first American lightweight sumo wrestler (320lbs) and almost made Olympic diving team too believe it or not because she dove in high school. Problem was, the coaches didn’t think she looked “good” in the 1 piece swimsuit. She was a fat broad after high school, she had mental issues and used to eat KFC and hella fast food to cheer her up. I met her and tried to “work her out hard” if you know what I mean, but she would want to eat junk food all day and she used to make money filming herself eat on webcam for a bunch of weirdo skinny dudes in trailer parks. I had to leave her in 2018 because she passed away, they said her heart was the same size as a captive African elephant who eats all day and shits about 200lbs a day. They had to incinerate her at the zoo in the large animal oven because they didn’t want to quarter her up like an elk and burn her piece by piece. RIP Bobby Jo Kelby Trixie (aka Big Mac)
Once the get 88mph you'll see some serious shit.
Conclusion : It’s not good to be on the right side of the screen when you are a sumotori.
You’re the right kind of right
It s no good to be at the right at all.only left!
You say sumotori which technically speaking is the right term but in Japan they more commonly use the "rekishi" which just mean wrestler in Japanese and not sumotori which Japanese term for distinguishing sumo wrestler
sumo is leftist? they gonna want female in male division
Hlooooo
I love sumo wrestling, it’s like if someone said: what if we gave powerlifters unlimited calories and made them fight in an arena which is just too small for comfort?
I love sumo too. The sumo wrestlers are so hardworking
Well we have something sorta close, strongman. Strongest men on this planet and equip them with the means of sumo wrestling (fun fact, it was an event for wsm several times before), you'll have tectonic plate shifts and land mass collision occurrences daily.
It is a damnably fine combat sport to watch, quite surprisingly. ...Always loved boxing and martial arts... can't be bothered with cage fighting etc... but sumo... class acts. ...And the whole ritualistic end of it, all that incredible craftsmanship bubbling out of every corner of the tradition... aye, it really is a hell of a spectacle, if ever there was one.
Then one guy stood up and said, "and let's give them thong diapers". Bless that guy.

I honestly never knew Sumo had striking. I lived for a year in Japan as a kid and my dad loved watching Sumo so I watched as well. This brings back great memories.
Same. I always assumed it was mostly pushing, pulling and tossing. Didn't realize striking each other in the face was allowed.
Did you guys play street fighter? HONDA had them fast hands

@@inthefade sumo has been around so long that if it was a successful move you’d see it often. I’m sure it’s been tried.
I honestly thought in sumo wrestling you just try push and throw each other out I didn't know you could straight up punch and knee each other
That's what I was thinking. They straight be slapping each other
Same.
as a big fan of sumo, you cant "punch", strictly. closed fist is not allowed and would result in instant disqualification and probably many more severe punishments. any of these strikes are with the outside of the elbow or shoulder. that said, you can absolutely!! slap monstrously to the face, and many wrestlers have been successful because of their powerful barrage of slapping. another "strike" is forcing the crotch of the hand up under the opponent's chin right into their throat. brutal stuff! bloody noses and black eyes are common enough.
and just as extra context, there are only 2 loss conditions: touch the ring with anything but the soles of your feet, or touch outside the ring with any part of your body. so unless you're trying to knock out and instantly crumple your opponent, you will probably be pushed out or over before a real punch could land. it would be a really useless move according to the rules of sumo
overwhelmingly they do what you said, push and throw. knee striking would never be a useful way to win, even on top of the likelihood that that type of striking would be severely punished.
if you wanna know more, the very 1st guy in this video is Hakuho, he is the greatest of all time, and more successful in sumo than most modern athletes in their own respective sports. he's one of the most dominant athletes of sports history, and is still active (he won the most recent tournament with 15 wins and 0 losses).
Evan Miller damn man thanks for the knowledge.
Don't forget a loss by modesty when one of the rikishi loses his mawashi
Knockouts in sumo frequently occur using kachi-age (搗ち上げ), a technique where the wrestler folds his arms and rushes forward at the tachi-ai to hit his opponent's chest or chin to make his posture upright, as shown in the first clip, with Hakuhō vs. Myōgiryū.
Otherwise known as elbows to the face.

Knockouts aren't exactly rare, but not common-place either. Hakuho, widely regarded as the greatest Yokozuna (sumo grand champion) of all time, had a fearsome slap/forearm blast combo, which is on show in this compilation. It got to the point the the governing body for Sumo asked him to refrain from using it.
So would you say, their uncommon, and even seldom?
@@markdizzle86 they're
@@markdizzle86 not in Juryo. In the upper 2 divisions a lot of “negative” sumo is practiced, i.e. defensive posturing and being very careful about placing yourself in precarious situations. “The gulf between the upper and lower divisions is the difference between heaven and hell.” So in the Juryo and lower divisions you can see dudes with concussed wobbly legs quite often. They are fighting their way into a paid rank/position so they fight with much more voracity. It’s where the real action is in Sumo
@@mikehuff9793 Hey man, thanks for the info! This is really interesting. You can almost draw a comparison to watching the NFL, or College football. Where College Football by many is considered to be more brutal even because these young players are so much more fierce because they're trying to make it.

Rikishi or Sekitori is the term for Sumo wrestlers.
This power must feel like a train is hitting you.
Excellent display of Newton's 3 laws in action and inertia as well. That shoulder hitting you in the face will probably launch someone of normal size.
You could see how a sumo could really punch deep through enemy lines and cause general mayhem, it is said they were usually the first to die laying down their lives to give home side the advantage
So they were the first football players?
zoyzoycornface I'm sure the first football game revolved around two warring clans fighting over a potato in the midst of a famine. One barbarian would throw it to the next in hopes that they may ration it, for their children. Except in that event they'd kill each other.
Considering they'd smash head on with Cavalry ad the Cavalry would come of second best, I'm not sure how your NFL players would fare
Impressive combinations , Respect .
My analysis on the pose itself strongly resembles the pose of a Silver Back Gorilla. Channeling the weight from the top, to the Quads and using the Muscles Elasticity to spring them forward to the opponent to either knock back or going for the jaw with tremendous energy. Much respect to the sport.
I like the move where you dodge the guy at the start and he goes flying by. I will incorporate that move into my own ninjitsu training regime.
These guys would make great offensive linemen
They don't really have the endurance or maneuverability, though.
They don't have the stamina or speed for 60 minutes, though. They are trained for pure strength in very short bursts. A sumo pulling guard on a sweep run, for example, would wear out very quickly.
Daron Wright True, but doesn't mean you can't use them for field goals, P.A.T. special teams, or a designed trick play.
That's true, but I think that would be better in college football, where they allow more players on the sidelines. NFL has a 53 player roster, so that leaves very little room for specialists. It's very common for the placekicker and punter to be each other's backups, for example. I would like to see a sumo do some pass blocking, though. Maybe converting a sumo into a lineman is possible. It works with rugby and football, so I think it's possible.
Daron Wright true enough
One thing I love about the Japanese is how humble they act, even in victory. In America, 95% of our athletes are so arrogant and flashy that they're hard not to hate.
Even when you look at Hakuhō, pretty much one of the flashiest rikishi ever, he is still nothing compared to how flashy some of these other athletes in western sports celebrate their victories. You are 100% correct that those overly arrogant athletes are hard not to hate - which is why I love sumo. Such a stark contrast.
I had no idea that you could do slaps in Sumo. Nor did I know you could do bell knockouts. Also (2:13) this guy, fecken brilliant.
